Nerdy things men say on holiday

(Maybe it's just mine)
assesses the parasols at the Beach
"I suppose they'd take all these out in winter, wonder where they put them"

later
"wonder what the staff to guest ratio is at this hotel "

later still
"think the sprinklers come on at 7.30 am alternate days"

Regarding queue demographics when we were using cross channel ferries regularly we had a mental list of 'don't get behind that car in the passport queue', I don't remember the make but one particular make was almost always held up for a thorough search! Crossing from Morocco to Gib we watched as a vehicle of this make was taken apart, no prizes for guessing the reason.

I was amazed on holiday once how quickly the man came over for the money for the loungers and brollies! They seem to have hawk eyed vision.
Someone has the job of putting them all out in straight lines, my son once remarked on this seeing them all so regimented on a big beach.

My DH talks about packing / packing the car a lot.

I almost feel a sense of dread as we approach a holiday, knowing I’ll need to hear about how we won’t have enough space, and maybe we need to buy a bigger car…

… then always insists on carrying everything himself.

Yes! My husband is exactly like this!

Poppingby · 04/08/2026 10:12

Our holiday photos are full of DH's different shots of the Cement factory chimneys in Malaga, including a few with beautiful young women in the foreground giving him the side eye for taking sly photos of them. I wish I could go back in time and reassure them he was actually taking sly photos of the cement factory.

We were on the beach in Sorrento at Easter once just as they were getting the beach umbrellas etc out of storage! They kept them all in a cave in the cliff and had to use ropes and a pulley to get them out. Felt very privileged to see that Grin.

the80sweregreat · 04/08/2026 10:31

My dh is obsessed with packing things in the car too.
He only discovered a few months ago you had a bit of the boot you could pull up and put things underneath! He was made up to have found more space.

Oh, I've got an update on umbrellas from our very swish resort. At the end of the day, they line them all up and then they get a string to show that they're all in order and aligned.

As a PP observed earlier...this is a rather sweet, tender thread.
The PP who mentioned that she'd appreciate these musings because it would make her feel safe was saying something quite important.

Thank You.
I told my husband that he generated a thread and he chuckled and said that I got all my best content from him which is partially true

We have nerdy conversations on long car journeys. Lastest was about human evolution and how useful it would have been if humans had developed the ability to see in the dark.

Sunnytraces · 04/08/2026 12:45

I so wondered about house insurance and bills for castle we visited I tried to put it into comparison site....

the80sweregreat · 04/08/2026 12:48

I love the Evolution show on bbc two. It is fascinating to see how things have evolved.

I always thought that stately homes and castles that nobody lives in were insured by the National Trust or even the government? I’ve no real idea, but if it’s a public place with visitors they must have some kind of indemnity or public insurance or something like that ?
I can imagine it’s complex.

If I lived in it I assume it would be home insurance 😁 as if I would let the commoners in. Tsk

FIoorboard · 04/08/2026 13:05

Ah my people!!

the80sweregreat · 04/08/2026 13:05

I thought I’d better mention ‘ if you live in it’ as of course people do ( or part of them sometimes )
What about the Tower of London ? The beefeaters live there , they must have to get their own insurance , but the actual building must be covered by other means ?
The public liability insurance for some places must be huge.

I would think that would be commercial insurance as work provided accommodation so beefeaters would probably just have contents insurance? 🤔

Historic Royal Palaces has public liability insurance for 'no less than £10 million' with Zurich
Insurance plc. Details can be provided on request.

My guess would be 50k or so a year for comprehensive one?

mochimoons · 04/08/2026 13:24

I think this might be a nerd thing rather than a man thing because I am guilty of this and my male partner laughs at me 😂

the80sweregreat · 04/08/2026 13:25

I wonder what the insurance claim was for Windsor castle in 92 and the fire damage! Must have been huge.

Apparently there was no insurance so it was funded by ticket sales grom Buckingham palace.
Wuite interesting even that level of importance gets "yeah, no. Not taking you on" from insurance companies!

the80sweregreat · 04/08/2026 13:38

Really ! Gosh, Windsor is such a big tourist attraction and so on, you would think it would be able to be insured. Haven’t really given it much thought though

maxslice · 04/08/2026 19:36

Does anyone else’s DH or DP seem to obsess about the weather? Multiple times a day. Not just where you are on holiday (checking this first) but anywhere? Nova Scotia, Texas, Little Tooting.

I like seeing where thunderstorms around the world are🙈
But not multiple time a day though

QueenStevie · 04/08/2026 22:33

It's more likely to be me waffling on about things like this. In the end my DD normally says, "I've finished with this conversation now," to make me stop wondering out loud!

Can you imagine answering the usual Do you own any single item valued at more than £5000? Er yes, a picture collection that alone is worth more than your insurance company maybe! There will however been public liability insurance to cover the paying visitors.
