Nerdy things men say on holiday

(Maybe it's just mine)
assesses the parasols at the Beach
"I suppose they'd take all these out in winter, wonder where they put them"

later
"wonder what the staff to guest ratio is at this hotel "

later still
"think the sprinklers come on at 7.30 am alternate days"

OP posts:

"Would you like a multi-plug adaptor for your side of the bed? I've brought one for each of us and a spare one."

This is true love. My DH does this for me too ❤️

GrandHighPoohbah · 04/08/2026 04:05

I am on holiday at the moment and you should see my recent search history OP 😂🤓🤓🤓

Mydogisagentleman · 04/08/2026 05:54

Our holidays are rare, we live partly in Spain.
DHs random musings centre around Croquet. Wonderings the last time I was there included
Would the club recognise my UK handicap?
Do you think that lawn was prepared with a laser
How many times a day do you think that the lawns are watered

Judd · 04/08/2026 06:24

We were both eating a bag of hula hoops once and there was a fact on the packet about how many you would have to lay out to reach the moon. I glanced at the answer, thought "oooh that's a lot" and instantly dismissed it from my mind. My husband was silent for a short while and then said "yeah that's about right" because he'd done a quick vague-ish calculation.
As Paula Abdul sang "we come together coz opposites attract"

iCod · 03/08/2026 10:55

Every time I go away, my husband just makes me what we call "the tech bag" of chargers/plugs and shit.

Obviously, I can do it myself, but I love that he does it for me because I'm a tit with USB cables.

Same 😂 although I’m in charge of my Fitbit charger, he does the rest!

DeftGoldHedgehog · 04/08/2026 06:32

You mean people who wonder, are curious and think about things? Jesus wept.

Oneearringlost · 04/08/2026 06:47

As a PP observed earlier...this is a rather sweet, tender thread.
The PP who mentioned that she'd appreciate these musings because it would make her feel safe was saying something quite important.

Oneearringlost · 04/08/2026 06:48

Happy anniversary OP!

You mean people who wonder, are curious and think about things? Jesus wept.

But its one thing to be curious. Its another to be curious about the mundane.
OP my ex was like this. I couldn't believe the things they pondered. I tried to be vaguely interested but it was constant.
It wasn't as if he had more interest thoughts in-between, they were all on these dull lines. He also wanted me to enagage with them. A quick "they probably them in a shed overwinter" wouldn't suffice.
My DH now also ponders but the level of pondering is more interesting imo. Last week we had "why do Owls rotate their head so much more than other birds of prey". Its not exactly highbrow philosophy but better than a query about parking.

CheeseWisely · 04/08/2026 07:14

This thread reminds me of my dear departed Grandad, who would have wondered aloud all these things and more, then made it his business to find out the answers.

Meanwhile DH (lovely in his own ways) meanders through life totally unaware of all these little mundanities, at least until I ask him how he thinks they clean the glass on the outside edge of the infinity pool…

Myli1 · 04/08/2026 07:16

Can’t see any issue with any of that conversation tbh. As others have said, on holiday when you are relaxed and you have more free headspace you may well then be pondering the more banal stuff.

YoungSoak · 04/08/2026 07:23

“Is everyone ready to rock and roll?”

“this travel plug is an excellent bit of kit”

“let’s go get a bite to eat”

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 04/08/2026 07:40

My DH: “North is that direction” pointing and looking down at the compass app on his iPhone 😂. No matter where we are. Middle of a city etc 🤣.

Also: “I’ve checked and our flight is on a [whatever model of plane it is]”. 🤣

Thank you for your updates, sir 🤓

Oh @iCod do you remember the days when you could start a thread on here without having to put <lighthearted> in the title and posters didn't take offence on behalf of others?

I always think about a friend of mine who, when they are facing a queue say at an airport or somewhere, his catchphrase is "choose by the demographic not the length" (of the queue )

Edited

Which demographic does he favour for efficiency?

Aw, sweet thread. I've laughed and shared it with my DH as we both do this. Life is mostly mundane. Every single second cannot be so exciting, so whilst we do lots of on the spot creative improv story making up that leaves us both giggling (20 years in, we still impress each other with this and make ourselves laugh), and also delve into deeper philosophical discussions, we also note to one another "the ferry's coming in, so that means those folks left France at x time", "that's an unusual Jay for around here" - sparking a conversation about Jay's, with some live Google "learning", etc. But more to the point of the thread, my DH's holiday spreadsheets are a thing of beauty. From original creation, through all the edits and revisions, to the final product that is laden with so much detail you'll never need a guidebook.

ginasevern · 04/08/2026 08:47

I can answer the question about sunbeds and parasols in winter, at least as far as Italian beaches go. The are stored in "magazzini" which are warehouses or sometimes shipping containers. As a widow, I so miss having someone to muse about every day mundane stuff with.

blankittyblank · 04/08/2026 08:50

I’m like this! Last time I went to the theatre I got really interested in how the reupholster the chairs when they have to be in use all the time. Was thinking about it for ages. I absolutely agree with all the pondering a of your DH!

Lovely...my DH too, it really is a thing of beauty. We're lucky @dudsville

Have a cup of tea dear and perhaps read a few light hearted books and go for a walk in the sunshine?

I am reminded of my late father, in the 1950s there was a radio programme where you could send in your question and they would discuss it if it was chosen. He asked 'when a light is switched off, which part of the room goes dark first?'. back in the days of a single centre light. The panel discussed it at length, considering speed of light, the saturation of light near the bulb and away fro the bulb. He, Dad, was quite proud that he had caused such an intersting discussion, the panel couldn't agree by the wat! He always encouraged us to be curious, he was long before 'nerd' though.

I imagine the bigger hotels have sheds to put the umbrellas in.
The deck chairs for rent in English seaside towns are usually kept in a storage type shed.
