I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

I went to Athens for a week last year and it was the exact opposite - spacious, clean, and full of interesting things to see and do. And I felt completely safe!

I'm also puzzled by opinions on Athens. I was there 3 yrs and was impressed - outstanding historical sites, an amazing museum, compact, walkable centre and good transport to outlying areas, attractive port, nice cafes and restaurants.

Lloret De Mar - Spain in 2008 - what a run down dump. 1st evening, walked out the hotel and their was blood everywhere and a very injured beaten up Spaniard lying on the road. Horrible hotel, horrible area. Couldn't wait to leave.

Scarborough England in 2025 - what a dump unless you like arcades. Such a shame as it must have been a great beach town back in the day.

Falkirk Wheel - Scotland in 2026 - omg never been so bored in my life. Amazing engineering but the most tedious experience ever.

The monkey temple in Kathmandu, Nepal - it was horrific. There were two funeral pyres happening while we were there, screeching monkeys flying all over the place, skinny cows wandering about peeing in the water and we kept getting stopped by a man who had a child with him who had open wounds all over her face - he kept demanding we give him money. It honestly felt like Hell.

How upsetting for you

Well any number. Rotherham was pretty bad. Krakow in 1989. Acapulco. Gosport.

Gosport? 🤔

@Swissmeringue I would also like to know why you didn’t like the Philippines as we had them down as a possible holiday.

@ChloeHH what took you to Mogadishu?

Digerydont · Yesterday 23:36

Elephant and Castle shopping centre. Pretty dire. Brixton. Actually, everywhere in South London except Peckham Rye.

Norwich. And Swansea services. An airport in Crete.

How very dare you! Norwich is a beautiful city. Really not sure what there is to dislike about it.

I liked Menorca a lot too. Very pretty and peaceful.

Egypt
Pray never to be reincarnated as a horse there or worse , a donkey .

I would sooner eat my own pulsing spleen than go back there

Mansfield, Sutton in Ashfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, it's like travelling back to the 70's and not in a good way. Grimly depressing, very run down and flags a plenty.

Completely agree. Add Shirebrook and Skegby in there too.

Sort of disagree with the sentiment, although Egypt is my least favourite North African country, but the spleen comment killed me off 😂.

I went to university in Hull, i lived off Beverley Road and I bloody loved it! Had the time of my life there. This was the late 90’s.

I bet we were in Spiders at the same time 🙂

Birmingham is a great city if you actually know it.
Jersey for me, has a very weird vibe

I think Birmingham's OK. I know what you mean about Jersey. Something slightly odd that I couldn't put my finger on.

I need to get out more, so many crap towns in the UK, I have never visited.

Peclet · Yesterday 23:40

Hull- was very oppressive and I got followed by a car of men. Awful

Normandy- bleak. The little towns and villages hate visitors. So unwelcoming

Stoke- poor and run down and felt really unsafe

HylianShroom · Yesterday 23:41

I’m not keen on hipster London places like Shoreditch.

Digerydont · Yesterday 23:41

Boulogne, unless it has improved since I was last there.

Ah my original home town area- truly shit in every way and a lot of the people have massive chip on their shoulder too- I hate having to go back -

I love these sort of threads too. Reminds me of this book called Crap Towns that someone brought me for a secret Santa gift when I was at uni. Wish I still had that book to reference to when seeing someone name a UK town on here.

I've still got that book, and crap jobs too, they're great!

Toss up between LA and Marrakech. Filthy and sleazy.

Lockerbie… very odd, creepy & unwelcoming.
We got stared at and followed back to the car then we speeded away got back on the motorway, never ever to return.
We only stopped for fish and chips on the way home from Glasgow!

Parts of Liverpool are very intimidating, although the City Centre is ok.

the towns people there have been through a lot, maybe it was related to that ?

Digerydont · Yesterday 23:44

We live in an era of unprecedented wealth, and yet these places still exist, why isn't the world more beautiful?

WoollyandSarah · Yesterday 23:45

Brussels was so dull we came back early.

With the benefit of hindsight, it's not really somewhere to go on holiday, but we wanted to go to Bruges and then somewhere else to make a decent length holiday.

orangehandles · Yesterday 23:45

Luton is pretty dreadful. At least they have an airport for a quick escape from the place.

And the M1 out of it. Although that too is grim in its own way.😂
