What is the worst place you have ever visited?

I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Swansea is pretty grim

Hartlepool.. the 'bus station' turned out to just be a bus stop outside the train station. Not even a bus shelter! That was it. FOR THE CITY. Couldn't believe it.

All the shops had shut down and you couldn't even buy a sandwich.

I haven't been to Hull but imagine it looks very cosmopolitan in comparison.

I feel sorry for Hull. I have never been and never wanted to. Even its name rhymes with dull.

I think the bottom of Gosport is a weeny weeny bit better than it has been these days. Ignoring the bus station

What part of the Algarve did you stay in? There are the most amazing and relatively cheap local restaurants in places like Quarteira and Loule. I love the Algarve away from the tourist hot spots. Lived there for many years.

This thread is making me laugh because I'm not that well travelled but I've been to a surprising amount of these places!

Luton is pretty dreadful. At least they have an airport for a quick escape from the place.

Oh yes, forgot about Morecombe - didn't want to remember it! Truly awful. Good view across to Cumbria.

Paris. Horrible place.

someone was murdered outside our hotel and we were stuck inside for hours. Hated the whole thing.

The Mona Lisa being the size of a magazine was equally as shit.

I am from Hessle near Hull although I don't live there now, it's like most cities it has shit parts and it has lovely parts. I'm proud to be from Hull, the people are super friendly and it has a great university. The Deep, Old Town, the museums are fab. The Humber bridge is impressive and nice to walk across and there are some lovely villages and towns surrounding it.

Oh I absolutely love Gibraltar. In a weirdly pleasing way it's a cross between Portsmouth and N Africa in Spain, but at the same time being a 1970s Britain. For example the pubs are traditional named pubs like the Ship or the Churchill or Lord Nelson. I love it in small doses.

I was hoping someone would try to defend Luton

Delhi. A real shithole. Loved Jaipur and Rajastan.

I went to university in Hull, i lived off Beverley Road and I bloody loved it! Had the time of my life there. This was the late 90’s.

Lisbon. Granted, there was a slightly beautiful faded grandeur to it, but there was also graffiti everywhereeeeeeeeee. We visited the botanical gardens, and someone had even spray painted a large cactus. Who spray paints a cactus!

Also, every 50 meters or so, I was offered hash and/or fake designer sunglasses, but perhaps I was just giving off that kind of vibe.

Conakry in Guinea. Genuinely horrible place. Freetown in Sierra Leone was not much better. The transfer across the bay at night was terrifying.

Birmingham is a great city if you actually know it.
Jersey for me, has a very weird vibe

Mogadishu - terrifying place
Maldives - so dull I felt my brain turning to mush
Many suburbs of Moscow
Ahmedabad - no endearing qualities

I live in Hull now but haven’t always. I love the place! Yes it’s got its 💩 parts as do most cities but it’s also full of charm. Guessing most people have only ever been to the Deep, the football or the docks. 🙈

surprised Bradford isn’t on the list… lived there 22 years - such a hole.

Again, it's all a question of taste. A PP mentioned Casablanca - which wound up being the place I liked best in all of my Moroccan travels. Because it actually felt real, and not touristy.

And to everyone who hates Amsterdam, really, if you venture beyond the first or second ring of canals, you will find a lovely, peaceful, fascinating city. But I agree with a PP that there are also so many amazing places elsewhere in the Netherlands to visit.

My personal dislike is Cyprus. So many faceless Mediterranean Mafia buildings all over the suburbs of Nicosia and Limassol, so many British expats that cafes all over the Greek part of the island advertise, apparently proudly, full British breakfasts...The history and archeology are amazing, but the rest is really quite horrible.

Corby, Waterlooville, Mansfield, Boston (UK), Wisbech, Crook. Not been anywhere awful abroad yet!
