I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

St Helens - nothing to do and no soul

Turkey, creepy leery muslim men.

blackpool. Fucking grim

50% of Turks are secular and not Islamic but let’s assume otherwise and bash Muslims as ever through our arrogant western warped perspective.

Bridlington a few weeks ago. Within 5 minutes I wanted to leave. It was tired, run down, dirty, seedy, litter, smelled of cigarettes and depression, and was thick in seagull shit dripping off everything. Had a very expensive waffle on the front and it was awful. Hated it. We stayed an hour.

Daytona Beach, Florida. Awful.

Ischia. Our apartment was overbooked and the owner put us in the hotel next door. I was tiny, dark and next to the reception and everyone walking by woke us up. We moved ourselves to another place with was miles inland. We had the worst Italian meal we've ever had (tasteless and split carbonara) and the waiter forgot to collect the plates and ask us if we wanted anything more, we struggled to catch his eye but he miraculously found us when we moved to leave. The food in general (town centre and where we were staying), was over-priced and not very good. The beaches were over-crowded and full of preening men, the roads weren't really safe to walk and it was all generally a bit "give us your money and fuck off). We'd been travelling in Italy and covered Rome, Naples and points inbetween, we'd enjoyed it all immensely, Ischia was a total and utter letdown.

We loved Ischia, but I'm sure it helped that we didn't go during the busy season. We had a fantastic Airbnb that wasn't ridiculously expensive, very close to the beach, and got up early to see an amazing sunrise over Mount Vesuvius, There's a fantastic garden on the other side of the island, and the castle is lovely to visit. Fun shopping too.

Belfast. I felt really unsafe the whole time I was there.

Cairo, the absolute filthiest place I have ever been, but in a kind of fascinating way!

i agree Cairo being the filthiest place I have ever visited. Men shitting in the street in broad daylight. Shit all over the walls of the museum toilets, I couldnt wait to leave

Hull. I am sure there are nice bits but we weren't in them.

I'm sorry to hear that as they might have been within walking distance, depending when you were there.I live in nearby Beverley and went to the "arts quarter" for the first time this year, near the marina. Admittedly we did have a lovely day weatherwise but it was like being on holiday - little bars and cafes, lots of people sitting in the sunshine, yachts etc

kerstina · 01/08/2026 18:05

I realise most of the places I have visited are lovely as we go to places we think we will like.
I found the island of Kos a bit barren when you compare it to the lushness of Corfu
i love most coastal areas but very disappointed with Weston as I like blue sea not brown !

Rutka · 01/08/2026 18:06

Marrakesh. Dark, dirty, maps couldn't help, no street names that we could see, everyone was either trying to steal (my handbag went immediately), beg or haggle.

i don’t get the Malta hate, so much history. Did you just stick to Sliema or St Julien?

I agree - there’s so much about Malta to love - Gozo is also one of the best places ever

I love Yorkshire too. Never met friendlier people. One of the best places in the UK!

I love it too, especially the Dales. And you're right about the people, too.

We were out walking one hot day, came down into a village and a woman doing her front garden said hello, commented on how hot we looked and insisted on refilling our water bottles, and got a bowl of water for our dogs!

Lisa from steps was born in Rhyl apparently!
I had to look it up , it looks a typical seaside town in the images but it sounds a strange one.

It's fine. It used to be like a mini Blackpool but now it's all been cleaned up and not much of a resort.

Carol Vordermann and John Prescott were born in nearby Prestatyn, as was Mike Peters from the Alarm.

Reno, Nevada. We've been to lots of areas of the US, and usually walk around to soak up what makes the city unique - especially in less 'touristique' areas. With Reno, we didn't even get out of the car: the lack of anything but low-grade casinos and strip malls, the people looked desperate/ scary/ zombied, the lack of anything worth stopping for.

Oldbutstillachild · 01/08/2026 18:11

New York. The moment I arrived I hated it. It was the moment I realised I actually despise cities. All my holidays since have been in places with lots more nature! The skyscrapers just felt overwhelming and made me feel trapped, and I'm from London!

Newsenmum · 01/08/2026 18:11

It annoys me when people write off whole countries. It’s like going to Blackpool and thinking youve seen all of England what people do with places like Turkey

Newsenmum · 01/08/2026 17:35

Wtf what do you mean?

Well not her grandfather as his Thai wife was only a few years younger than him but she said she'd go out with her partner and see old fat decrepit dirty old men, usually westerners, with young Thai kids in restaurants and bars. Obviously not their kids. She had a go at a couple of them but they were brazen. She said it made her feel physically sick. She couldn't wait to move on elsewhere. This was 2009 so maybe Thai authorities have cracked down on it. Her grandfather said lots of people had guns for protection.

I enjoyed my time in Leningrad - much easier than Moscow, for various reasons.

We were supposed to have a year abroad. Shan't derail, but Cold War issues meant that you took what you could get, so my time was split - the Leningrad trip was actually a bonus during my Junior Honours 'reading term' - someone at another uni had dropped out and the lecturer in charge of travel abroad had put forward my name without checking with me first!

My first trip was Krasnodar for a month - 70+ British students who should have been on courses in Moscow, Kiev, Minsk, etc landed at Kuban' State University because all the student accommodation in the summer of 1981 was being used by tourists there for the Olympics.

That was interesting, but a bit of an ordeal. All the decent food was being sent to tourist areas, we all fell ill because of the water and - at least at that time - Soviet student toilet blocks were quite unsanitary. Plus the student hostel was infested with cockroaches. (God, I'd forgotten about that!)

I can't remember which way round it was now, but we had large brown and small black...They sent in pest control. That killed off one type and then the other type took over.

Can't remember which it was, but one type was referred to as Amerikantsi, I kid you not.

Apparently, the head of the Faculty for Russian as a Foreign Language used to be quite a benign chap. When we were there, he'd been replaced by a KGB factotum...

By the end of the one month course, I was dreading going back for my planned 5 months in Moscow, but I guess it toughened me up for the challenge...

In all seriousness, the Moscow experience was much better, but still had the same difficulties with regard to food and toilet blocks.

Leningrad was much easier because my Russian was so much better then and Leningraders were much more laid back than Muscovites.

Leningrad joke:

A Leningrader goes on a visit to Moscow. On the Metro, he gives up his seat to a strange woman.

She addresses him "Citizen, I see that you are a Leningrader!"

"Why yes! How did you know?"

"You gave me your seat!"

"Ah yes. And I can see, Citizeness*, that you're a Muscovite."

"Why yes! How did you know?"

"You didn't say 'Thank you'."

[Grazhdanin for Citizen; Grazhdanka was the female form. "Comrade" was reserved for Communist Party members.]

"American" cockroaches rang a bell, so I checked, and it's an actual species. Long brown ones rather than round black ones. Apparently they turn up in the UK as well.

Wtafdidido · 01/08/2026 18:14

Marrakesh as a young (20) single female traveller. Eastern turkey wasn’t much better but at least the women looked out for us and loudly pulled up any male who was hassling or being disrespectful of us. I did however get several proposals! 😂 in both places.
Hanoi, Vietnam was too much for me. Loud, chaotic, damp and the humidity was unbearable. And as someone with very fair skin people kept touching me and bringing their babies to touch me as apparently it’s good luck.

Arcticbattle32 · 01/08/2026 18:15

Egypt - there were lots of creepy men and I didn’t feel safe.
Weymouth - I found it grey and desolate.

What did you dislike about Norwich? It has so much history, I tend to think of it as York, without as much tourist tat or the massive crowds. It has some amazing places to visit in the city and if you venture just a couple of miles out there's even more.

I really like Norwich. It has loads going on, lots of nice pubs and places to eat, some interesting architecture and decent shops. I think the whole city has a nice atmosphere.

Ilikesundays · 01/08/2026 18:17

Brixton Prison. You never forget the clanging of doors, the dead eyes of the warders and the smell.

JJWT · 01/08/2026 18:18

Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Quite a while ago. It was a right load of crap! It even had a fixed (as in non moving) installation pointing at all the planets with information about how far away they are. You know, those things that are constantly moving. Some of it looked like a derelict car park, some of the site was an abandoned police training college, some of it was an abandoned university building (no access to them, they were just there and crap looking), and in one fairly proper looking exhibition space, there was a snotty person telling you off if you attempted to lift your child up so they could actually see into the sculpture - no steps or any way of viewing it if you weren't a full grown able bodied adult, meanwhile the toddler of a very posh family was having photos taken INSIDE a sculpture!! Which was apparently fine. It was just a weird, weird, incoherent non-entity of a place. I just didn't get it at all. Ooh it feels good to get that off my chest. The various sculptures they have at Chatsworth from time to time are great!

Journey1234 · 01/08/2026 18:18

Hownslow London for me. I felt on edge and rather scared.

Morepositivemum · 01/08/2026 18:19

New York here too, I’ve never seen so many people injecting and we saw the police take away homeless people who had died. Put that with the wealth of the shops and it’s appalling. Wealth vs living on the street. Gave a guy in a wheelchair 20dollars and he started crying and asked were we sure.

I had to visit for a study project (though was advised to take someone big with me). It is right at the bottom of the deprivation indices so not surprising how it feels. A lot of the homes are single skinned, poor quality and unmortgageable. Also under sea level (hence the big wall). When people complain about where I live (wealthy south east town, albeit with some deprived areas) I want to take them and show them Jaywick.

My DB lives in Jaywick. It is truly awful, although they have actually got round to resurfacing the roads. They're no longer full of massive potholes.
