I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Loved Boston! Went for two nights.

Loved MIT museum, drinks in a pub at Harvard. Shopping and many many flat whites.

Also so many bookshops because of all the universities.

Brilliant place for a short break.

Have you got the correct Boston there ? !

Malta. Flies everywhere and non- descript food. Wanted history and old buildings. Got H&M and the Body Shop

We loved Valleta!

junecat · 01/08/2026 17:34

Gambia. Just awful 😣

The thing that is coming across is so many countries that it’s the men that ruin it all ;(
Its so depressing isn’t it.

Hard agree.

My own experiences in Egypt, India, Turkey and Belgium - of all places.

Were negatively impacted by men.

My daughter said Pattaya was ghastly. She went to see her paternal grandfather & his wife there and he had a gun for protection. She said the amount of paedos there with little kids was horrific.

Wtf what do you mean?

Malta - i was so bored! Also went to the algarve Portrugal and didn’t enjoy it at all, it was expensive, couldn’t find anything other than english food and bars which is the opposite of what i want on holiday. Id love to return to portrugal but not there.

Went to the algarve. Sagres, albufeira. Plenty of portuguese bar and restaurants there

I got married in Budva in 2007. The old town is gorgeous but yes the Russians dominate. The countryside of Montenegro is breathtaking as is other towns like Kotor and Herceg Novi.

I think we probably went at a particularly bad time. Loved the rest of Montenegro (and got married in Croatia, so not too far) and Bosnia too (especially Mostar).

Was so disappointed hy Budva, though, as i had heard such good stuff about it!

HelenaWaiting · 01/08/2026 17:38

Toronto. To be fair, it was February and the weather was filthy.

Cantwaitforwinter · 01/08/2026 17:31

Turkey, 90% child predators

How can you say that?

Hull. No redeeming features.

Years ago my son who is now 14 went on a school trip to the deep and I went as a helper - I remember driving thru the bronx but the kids did enjoy the Deep

UrOutdoors · 01/08/2026 17:41

Tunisia was the pits for me. Constant sexual harassment and I saw a group of people stoning a dog.

Cantwaitforwinter · 01/08/2026 17:42

Newsenmum · 01/08/2026 17:39

How can you say that?

Because I’ve visited multiple areas of Turkey and can say that from personal experience, almost every bloke is a risk to foreign women, especially those with blonde hair and/or blue eyes. Some of them are lovely, kind and respectful to women & children, but not many

AvidMauveCrab · 01/08/2026 17:43

Amsterdam. Very dirty, rubbish just lining the streets

tommyhoundmum · 01/08/2026 17:45

MercyMeMary11 · 31/07/2026 22:17

Great Yarmouth- surely the armpit of England

Some friends called me from there today. They love it and are planning to move there probably next year.

DressOrSkirt · 01/08/2026 17:48

Amsterdam
Genoa
Rome
Basil
Vienna

But the worst was Marseille! It was dirty and there were so many rats. The customer service everywhere was also terrible.

Luckily I've been to lots of lovely places too!

Lagos, Nigeria. 🇳🇬

I actually think when people talk about hell this is what it looks and feels like. It's the only time I had to change flights to cut an already short trip shorter because I literally thought I would die if I didn't escape.

I want to go nigeria next year.
Can you explain why, please?

Its a fast evolving country in Africa.with a good economy. Modern as well.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 01/08/2026 17:49

Rochdale town centre... years ago. In my defence, I only went because I had to go to a specific building society (that was the nearest branch) to withdraw my money and close the account. I had a woman run up to me and beg for my money (while showing me her arms to indicate that she wasn't a drug user), a couple were having a domestic and she was desperately trying to hold onto the pushchair (with a surprisingly passive toddler sat in it, as if this was normal) as he kept trying to yank it off her, and someone in the building society told me to get out of the town centre quickly, as there was a BNP/EDL march on soon. Oh, and I made the mistake of saying, "Hello!" to a stranger (normal at home), and she gave me the sort of look that indicated that she expected me to kidnap her child. Needless to say, I have not been back there. It's a shame, really, because there are some beautiful historic buildings there.

As for Rhyl... people around here go, "Why on EARTH would you go to Rhyl?!"

Redcar. Closely followed by Middlesbrough.

I'm from Redcar. Wasn't too bad in the 70s and 80s. Very safe and friendly.

secondspring · 01/08/2026 17:51

For me was Rio de Janeiro. Mainly felt unsafe.
I felt very safe in India and going every year now. My absolute favourite.

mumwheresmyribena · 01/08/2026 17:52

Ischia. Our apartment was overbooked and the owner put us in the hotel next door. I was tiny, dark and next to the reception and everyone walking by woke us up. We moved ourselves to another place with was miles inland. We had the worst Italian meal we've ever had (tasteless and split carbonara) and the waiter forgot to collect the plates and ask us if we wanted anything more, we struggled to catch his eye but he miraculously found us when we moved to leave. The food in general (town centre and where we were staying), was over-priced and not very good. The beaches were over-crowded and full of preening men, the roads weren't really safe to walk and it was all generally a bit "give us your money and fuck off). We'd been travelling in Italy and covered Rome, Naples and points inbetween, we'd enjoyed it all immensely, Ischia was a total and utter letdown.

I loved Marrakech! So bonkers and surprising. Wasn’t hassled (there are undercover tourist police milling around these days!) and there are loads of amazing restaurants.

Agree- bloody love the place

Bodrum, Turkey. Just constant harassment and not an enjoyable experience. Just felt very stressful. Has put me off visiting Turkey again, though I am sure other places in the country are lovely!

Edited

I was going to say the same... I went to Turkey with friends as a teenager, felt so unsafe.. followed, grabbed by men... just felt really unsafe.
I'd maybe go as a family but definitely not as a group of women.

Bringmebacktothe90s · 01/08/2026 17:57

Southend on sea. We googled it and it looked amazing for the kids for a day out. Nope never again. Felt so unsafe

How very dare you! Norwich is a beautiful city. Really not sure what there is to dislike about it.

I liked Menorca a lot too. Very pretty and peaceful.

I was confused about the Norwich comment too, it’s a great city.

Agree- bloody love the place

Me too. However, the first time we went was in 2007 and it was utter chaos, hassle everywhere. We "escaped" down country and did a desert trek which was wonderful. We returned in 2021 and again in 2023 and it was like chalk and cheese, it's now so much improved. I'm just researching to book a stay in Southern Morocco over Xmas and new year too. There's also so much more to Morocco than Marrakesh.
