I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Hull. I am sure there are nice bits but we weren't in them.

Also Hull. Although I did a bit of promotions work in Luton town centre, the rest of the team had never been to Luton before and it was like they’d been parachuted into ‘Nam. They could not wait to leave.

Birmingham is a great city if you actually know it.
Jersey for me, has a very weird vibe

I thought jersey looked superb on the apprentice 2024! I was saying to my husband We should go.

Colwyn Bay - actually scared me !

In what way ?

RJ2023 · 01/08/2026 16:12

Durdle Door.

Massively inconvenient to get to and it's just a hole in a cliff.

For me personally, a holiday in Stoke on Trent in 1987. I do like Marmite but breathing in the yeasty backwash for a week was unpleasant.

Strange choice for a holiday though!

Elephant and Castle shopping centre. Pretty dire. Brixton. Actually, everywhere in South London except Peckham Rye.

I worked in e&c shopping centre. The men there are awful you get harassed non stop.

@Swissmeringue I would also like to know why you didn’t like the Philippines as we had them down as a possible holiday.

@ChloeHH what took you to Mogadishu?

Philippes is riddled in poverty. So if you want to spend the entire holiday absolutely sad, go for it

Violinist64 · 01/08/2026 16:20

Bridgewater. Dreadful place. Run down and menacing feel.

Gotback · 01/08/2026 16:20

Marrakesh bus station ladies' toilet, sometime in September 1993.

AprilMizzel · 01/08/2026 16:21

Telford - remember it being souless and hard as non driver to get around to site I was based at - lots of being unable to cross roads and having to take shuttle buses . Though village I stopped in on outskirts was lovely - and people were nice.

I'm surpised at Leicester - we lived near it and rarely went - though went to Coventyr and Brimigham regularly - one of the kids at uni there and been very pleasntly surpised at shopping center and historical bits.

San francisco - tourist bits were great and people freindly but last day one of work colleagues instead we walk round the city it was a souless awful place with no center. It was decades ago and I think it's gone really down hill since then.

I recommend you avoid Greece.

What an idiotic comment.

Cairo. Hot, busy, dusty, smelly, noisy. Hell on earth. And we all came down with the worst stomach issues possible.

Is that from drinking their tap water or food mixed with tap water?

Ive read avout people getting bad stomach bugs from this

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 01/08/2026 16:24

@AprilMizzel , I have fond memories of Telford!
Telford Time Machine | Art UK

The villages nearby are lovely but Telford isn't.

Cairneyes · 01/08/2026 16:26

Silloth. Dreadful place at the end of nowhere.

cabus · 01/08/2026 16:27

Wincanton. Saturday afternoon, not a soul to be seen,

Perhaps zombies come out after dark and liven the place up.

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 01/08/2026 16:27

@Fedupoffeelingthisway111 , their water is probably not worse than this country, it's just that the bacteria aren't ones we're used to.

JuliettaCaeser · 01/08/2026 16:27

Second Cairo. Full of disgusting vile men. Never been so hassled. Theyve ruined the pyramids. The museum was good but not enough to make up for the rest of it. Female friend and I ended up confined to our hotel room in the end. Couldn’t even use the pool as the waiters came out and stood in a line leering at us. Absolute shithole.

Oh and before anyone pipes up we dressed modestly. But being unaccompanied western young women we had target on our backs

nam3c4ang3 · 01/08/2026 16:29

Universal studios Singapore. Expensive and totally fucking boring. Wait times insane. Health hazard with wait times and the sheer amount of people - really unhelpful staff. Crazy prices for anything - almost $10 for a drink. I would not recommend the place to my worst enemy.

Fizzink38 · 01/08/2026 16:30

Venice. It STANK. So crowded we couldn't move around, and the walls were coated with gross dried slime. (They said it had flooded that year and this was the muck that had been left) The water in the canals had a thick, oily surface.

It was 30 years ago but I'd never go back.

FlamingoFloss · 01/08/2026 00:46

Snap. The worst place by far I have ever been to. If someone told me I’d won a free holiday and it was to Tunisia I would say no thank you.

My friend married a Tunisian. She said before she met him outside the shops, she was relentlessly followed around and touched and grabbed.
They now live in the usa together

Turkey in general and Marmaris airport in particular. I’ve decided I’m never going back to either.
I’ve visited as part of a cruise several times and it’s the only country that behaves as if they are doing you a favour allowing you in (ridiculous considering the amount of tourist revenue cruise ships bring in and that you are thoroughly vetted as a part of that).
I was frisked at Marmaris airport prior to my return flight home, in full view of the other passengers (in fact I was made to turn and face them all as we were passing through security), having a thorough search of my genital area and my breasts - a single aging female with no red flags whatsoever.

Please tell me you were searched by a female officer /Airport staff

LizzieLazzie · 01/08/2026 16:34

Zoflorabore Same here. I loved being at uni in Hull - chose it as it was by far the friendliest place I visited. Met my husband and closest friends there. Still love it.

Yoyokitten · 01/08/2026 16:35

Benidorm !!
Awful place, too hot, shocking hotel, food poisoning, drought and they turned the water off every afternoon. Was a nightmare for the whole 2 weeks.
We just about recovered to get on the flight home.
However the day trips away from it were brilliant.
I actually felt depressed being there.
The hotel overlooked a chicken shop, night club, car park and supermarket.Noise was unbelievable, we finally got to sleep about 3am and the bin men arrived at 6.
Never ever been back, and if I unexpectedly won a holiday there, I would give it away.

Can anyone recommend a Greek island that is quite laid back and not too touristy without being too sleepy ?

I prefer the Cyclades for what you are looking for. So I can recommend: AntiParos, Tinos, Folegandros, Sifnos, Serifos, Syros. Naxos too.

In August, most are busy with holidaying Athenians. But what you are asking for they would deliver. For some you will need a car.

onlyhereforthefood · 01/08/2026 16:39

San Francisco. I just felt unsafe the whole time.
