I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Tijuana, Mexico. Awful town. I am sure the rest of the country is great though.

I think Tijuana's gone downhill in the last 25 years, we used to do the day trip and have a pleasant time but it sounds awful now. It's a pity, because the 'Rolex' I paid a whole $5 for 30 years ago with a lifetime guarantee isn't working now and I would like to return it!

Budva in Montenegro (really liked other parts of the country).

it was filthy, the old town had buildings with PVC windows, and seemed to cater only for Russians looking for cheap beer.

Also found both Clacton and Great Yarmouth really run down and a bit scary.

I got married in Budva in 2007. The old town is gorgeous but yes the Russians dominate. The countryside of Montenegro is breathtaking as is other towns like Kotor and Herceg Novi.

Why? It's a whole country for starters so hardly comprable to 3 small Nottinghamshire towns and I have been there several times. I assume you are making an obtuse comment about me mentioning flags .

I didn't understand that comment either 🤔

Hah I left when I was 5 years old and also never lived there as an adult. My last visit to Russia was probably 20 years ago. My teen daughter wants to go though so might have to brace myself and take her 😬

I went a year before the war - my childless aunt died and I had to deal with the estate. I really did not want to go and the visit was really weird. Getting visa was a laugh and a half. Before that, I visited when I was maybe 9 or 10 and can't really remember much.

I wont be able to go now as I'm British with Ukrainian roots and have strong links to the army/ raising money for the army/ etc. Not that I want to!

I never been to St P and never felt like going tbh.

Great Yarmouth- surely the armpit of England

This! Went to a pub and everyone turned to look at me in the bar, like 'we don't take kindly ' vibes 😂

Warsaw, we did a blind booking and ending up spending a week there. I understand the historical importance but it was just depressing.

Other places in Poland are great, Poznan, Danzig, Sopot, Krakau.

Rhyl. Drove through it on the way to somewhere else and the tattoo to teeth ratio was all wrong. We had to stop for a while as there were two blokes fighting in the middle of the street while their partners egged them on, each clutching a sobbing child. I was with my Mum and she was quite upset as she'd often gone there as a child/teenager with her family and said it used to be lovely.

Where on earth were you going to that you needed to drive through Rhyl to get there?

SuzieGotYourNumber · 01/08/2026 15:52

Mmmnotsure · 31/07/2026 23:53

Tattoo to teeth ratio - 😄

Rhyl has gone down in folklore in our family. Years ago we stopped there for a couple of hours on our way to Anglesey. The place was so bad it was brilliant. In a claustrophobic shopping arcade there was a musical cabinet of string puppets that you put 20p in to make it play music and make the puppets dance. So many of the puppet strings were broken the puppets jerked about like the living dead, and the cat puppet just beat its head repeatedly on the floor. I bought a brilliant naff cat t-shirt from one of the vendors - made in China and the English wording wasn't quite right "Dream a cute time is now". Nothing was quite right in Rhyl - a bit like Twin Peaks

The rudest American tourists I encountered in my old job in tourism were from either New York or Chicago. Everyone else was friendly and polite.

We travelled extensively in the US and we rarely met anyone with a good word to say about those from New York.
We once made a very long, very straight drive from Albuquerque to Roswell where the aliens were supposed to have landed, a total waste of about 6 hours, luckily we were going on to somewhere else, they could make far more of the Roswell Incident. The Museum of the event had my late OH in stitches, he said it was just like an old Woolworths from the 1950s, all wooden counters etc that hadn't been removed. Looking today, it seems to have improved considerably!

Liberancho · 01/08/2026 15:53

I also don’t really rate Greece or Italy and am not desperate to go back

This is why these repeated threads are ridiculous.

Captainhook3 · 01/08/2026 15:53

Clacton on sea - no words
Blackpool - got spat on

what you are describing is the red light district which I totally agree is grim. But get away from there and Amsterdam is beautiful, green and very clean.

Apparently the fields of 🌷 tulips 🌷 in person are even more spectacular than photos.

Same for me. Went with my friend when we were about 22.

The constant harassment, stalking heckles in the street were horrific. We were 2 weeks all inclusive - we left the hotel twice and never again. Rest of the holiday was in the hotel - pool by day and bed by about 9pm because even at the evening entertainment we were getting harassed...

It seems like this is a running theme in Egypt, India, Morocco,.turkey and Tunisia 😫

Fedupoffeelingthisway111 · 01/08/2026 15:57

nextwrecks · 31/07/2026 22:52

The monkey temple in Kathmandu, Nepal - it was horrific. There were two funeral pyres happening while we were there, screeching monkeys flying all over the place, skinny cows wandering about peeing in the water and we kept getting stopped by a man who had a child with him who had open wounds all over her face - he kept demanding we give him money. It honestly felt like Hell.

Was the child in a really bad way?

Las Vegas - surreal and not in a good way. I got ill there - I think the static electricity off the gaming machines and the 24/7 artificialness of everything was the cause. I couldn’t wait to leave.

Its really grotty on WALK WITH ME TIM

Beijing. Given, it was many years ago now, but I hated it. Smog, smoking men leering and hawking up phlegm, stinky horrible place.

Acapulco. So bad its almost good.

Huddersfield

Pattaya in Thailand - seedy as fuck

My daughter said Pattaya was ghastly. She went to see her paternal grandfather & his wife there and he had a gun for protection. She said the amount of paedos there with little kids was horrific.

No, it really isn’t, I didn’t spend all my time in the red light district 😬 this was coming out of the station and walking pretty much anywhere. Don’t remember much greenery at all unfortunately and this was only a couple of weeks ago.

Isnt it a bunch of women naked or whatever in red lighted windows shaking their tushes for a man to come and join them in the window? And pay for the privilege?

Do you mean Marwell?

I’ll admit I’ve been to better zoos but there is loads of animals there!

Yes. I think they were all asleep indoors!

I have travelled quite extensively, including to many of the countries people often describe as "the worst" in this thread. I don't think I have ever been anywhere that I didn't like or wouldn't go back to, but, there are a number of places I don't understand the hype of:

Amsterdam - to me, it's just a really dirty city, and the activities you can do there aren't my cup of tea. I would visit Amsterdam again, but only for a day or two. I enjoyed other parts of the Netherlands more.

Italy in general - it's a really run down country on the whole. Graffiti everywhere, buildings that need repairing, garbage that needs removing...it's only really the tourist places that are being looked after, but I'm someone who ventures outside of those so...I get sad seeing how derelict many areas are. Italian food also isn't anything special, IMO. But I'll admit that this may just come down to my own religious dietary restrictions that mean I can't eat most of the food I'd actually be interested in eating.

UAE - it has the potential to be great, like other Gulf countries are (IMO), but it's too superficial of a place, and every aspect of society there kind of forces you to put your hands in your pocket. Want to sit down at the Dubai mall? There are no benches anywhere - if you want to sit, you have to go to a coffee shop or restaurant to buy something. I don't like that. I have been there 3 times, and will go back again for sure, but only for a day or two. Likely if I need to connect a flight there anywhere. As a Muslim, it's a nice place to be for the food scene, the calls for prayer and, generally, are more Muslim-oriented atmosphere.

Japan - don't get me wrong, I actually like Japan a lot and will DEFINITELY return. It's a real cultural experience to visit the country. But I personally think it's a bit overrated. I wouldn't say Japan is my favourite country I have ever been to, like many others think it is. But I guess that just comes down to taste.

Turkish beach cities - they're just a bit dull to me if you don't plan lots of day trips to ancient ruins, natural sights, fun activities in nature on on the sea, etc. Very touristy places and bad food. I love places like Istanbul, though. Probably one of my favourite cities. I would love to visit Ankara, Bursa, Gaziantep, Antakya and Cappadocia.

Berlin and Germany in general - again, I actually like Berlin and Germany. They're also close to my own country, so an ideal place to visit for the weekend. But people just overhype them, IMO. Berlin is a great city, but it's definitely not the best I've been to in Europe. In general, I struggle a bit with Germany because I'm not super interested in German history and culture. Germany, and Berlin specifically, are nice enough places, but there are other countries and cities in Europe I much prefer.

Brighton - I'm willing to give Brighton a second chance, but I really didn't have the best experience there. Again, it has the potential to be such a nice place, but I was shocked to see how run down the place is. It smells bad, too. And the people there SUCK so much. So, so much. Brightonians are the worst part about Brighton. In fact, I don't think I have travelled ANYWHERE on this planet and met more rude and appalling people than Brightonians. I have travelled all over the UK, and British people anywhere else on the isles are always so lovely, nice and friendly - except for Brightonians. Everyone complain about Londoners, but I travel to London several times every year, and I think Londoners are great! But Brightonians...everyone from the seagulls to the homeless drunks to the bus drivers were utter asshole pricks. The only reason I would go back to Brighton is because, in spite of the absolutely vile people there, I had some nice memories. And a good fish & chips. I would apologise to any Brightonian reading this, but...your people deserve the criticism. Do better...

Please enlighten us on the activities to do in Amsterdam. Because I know what im picturing in my mind and it isnt exploring windmills

i hated the noise, it’s a city I get that but it’s so noisy the car horns honking relentlessly it was too much for me, not the worst place I’ve been though that would be Blackpool.

I must say that the programme SCUM LANDLORDS AND NASTY TENANTS Blackpool looks like a cesspit of Needles and lowlife, run down and dirty.

I went to Amsterdam a few times and even though I did smoke some weed there was no other "activities" I engaged in )) I went to a few museums, had excellent food, explored the city and visited several excellent modern buildings.

Its a very pretty city, canals are lovely, flower markets are amazing if you go at the right time.

Morocco. To be fair, a lot of the bad experience was down to the tour, which was expensive yet clearly done on the cheap by the local organisers. We visited all the famous instagram places - total tourist traps. If I never eat nasty watery tagine again it will be too soon. Plus I had to have rabies shots after a cat scratched me.The cats are aggressive and demanding.

Your last sentence also describes the Moroccan men

I really liked Vegas when I went there in my 20s, it was fun - but I hardly saw it in the light of day ))

I was told it went downhill massively in the recent years.
