I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Went to a place called Belper in Derbyshire. Not sure why I didn’t like it much , but it had a strange vibe.
The cab driver who took us back to the hotel was nice though.
The hotel ( not in Belper ) had some kind of generator on the go all night and we didn’t get a wink of sleep. Nobody around to ask , had to hunt down more toilet rolls and tea bags in their store cupboard ( which was left open ) and the man in charge got the hump the next day when we left at 6am and didn’t have breakfast. We got half the money back ( reluctantly) after a bit of a row about it all. He said it wasn’t his generator , but other reviews of that room said the same thing. No wonder they didn’t have any night staff about and I don’t want to wait two hours for the breakfast as I imagined it wouid be rubbish going by the general state of the place. Some hotels in the uk really do little to make you go back and don’t like refunding for bad service or lack of sleep and it’s not even that cheap.

I agree sounds like they didn't leave Sliema, Valetta is one of my favourite places

Sorry but I agree with @fizzyroselemonade about Malta. It was generally filthy with stacks of rubbish everywhere. It also resembled a mass building site (worse even than the Spanish costas in the early days). Restaurant toilets were invariably nasty and anything resembling reasonably decent food was rare. And, not surprisingly, there were thousands of flies. Yes, Valetta is very interesting but quite frankly it involves enduring the rest of it. After 3 whole weeks of Malta (we were visiting my aunt) we left and got the ferry to Sicily to stay with other family. I've never been so glad to leave somewhere.

Central Birmingham - what a dump, full of works, locals have no distinguishable personality.
Barrow-on-Furness - post-industrial desolation.
Fuerte Ventura - crappy food, unfriendly locals.
Northern Patagonia - arid and depressing.
Kamloops, Canada - like Northern Patagonia but house cost CAD 750k to 1 mil...

Milton Keynes

My parents lived in Milton Keynes. Nowhere I have ever been has given me such a strange sense of alienation.

the80sweregreat · 01/08/2026 14:57

Leamington spa town, the only one I’ve seen security tags on the actual baskets in the Sainsbury’s. Loads of homeless people causing problems in McDonald’s ( the poor manageress looked exhausted) and a general air of once being lovely and now not so much. The premier inn , I could write paragraphs about how bad that was
! I don’t have much luck with hotels. Lol

Wow. We found it the complete opposite. Super friendly 😮

Agreed. New Yorkers are direct and to the point, not rude. And a lot of British tourists don’t grasp that notions of class are different here.

No I loved the Philippines! Where did you go? I had the best time and want to go back!

We went to Manilla, Palawan, Malapascua, Bohol, Boracay, Camiguin off the top of my head. I think we stopped in a few other places too. The destinations in themselves were mostly fine, though I definitely wouldn't go back to Boracay. It was travelling between them that I really hated. I've replied to a few other posters trying to put my finger on what I didn't like, but fundamentally I found there was a hugely aggressive undertone absolutely everywhere. Also the ubiquitous sex tourism which I do know you get pretty much everywhere in South East Asia. But it felt even worse in the Philippines. Also the ferries were absolute death traps, 60 people in a room with one tiny porthole entrance etc. I just really really wanted to go home, we've travelled a lot and I've never had that feeling in any other country.

I recommend you avoid Greece.

Why? It's a whole country for starters so hardly comprable to 3 small Nottinghamshire towns and I have been there several times. I assume you are making an obtuse comment about me mentioning flags .

Hope Cove in Devon. H and I named it hopeless cove. Dreary and absolutely nothing to do.

I stopped there with some friends when we walked from South Sands to Bantham. We had a really nice lunch sitting outside a very pleasant pub and I found it quite charming. Friendly people, too.

That stretch of the SW coastal path is truly stunning.

Wow cheek! Snob alert! 🤣

I’m sorry, it’s not intentional, I can’t help how I feel 😭

I did also date someone from Leeds once! It’s not like I haven’t given it a chance.

Birmingham is a great city if you actually know it.
Jersey for me, has a very weird vibe

My parents went to Jersey. My mum it had a really creepy vibe

To be fair I avoid all of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, flags everywhere and very EDL.

Derby is a little bit nicer and Derbyshire is obviously beautiful.

Oh, I love these threads. I haven't read any of the comments yet, but I just know that someone's written off an entire country as crap and horrible just because they visited a town somewhere and the weather was miserable or there wasn't any egg and chips and it was "all foreign muck" to eat 😂

Or an entire state in the US (which in size terms is often larger than some countries in Europe) when they have only seen a small part of it.

mugglewump · 01/08/2026 15:28

Cadbury World - Shameless PR and not at all Wonka

Aghios Gorgios, Corfu - Everything broken, poor quality over-priced food

A youth hostel in the middle of New Zealand's south island in winter - the coldest I have ever been.

Sa Coma, Mallorca - a regrettable last-minute package booking.

Batashevo, Bulgaria - AirBnB was a granny's flat with ucomfortable beds, a terrible bathroom and a jar of coffee in the cupboard from the 1970s

Naples - run down and menacing - NEVER again!

Oh I love Naples! I wouldn't stay long but the centre of Naples is romantic, and Vesuvius is atmospheric, glowering about the city!

And the pizza is like no pizza I have ever tasted. Mama mia!

It's a perfect stop-off on the way to see Pompei.

OneDivineHammer · 01/08/2026 15:33

ImpossibleGermany · 01/08/2026 05:55

That seems to be happening in a few places now. I saw a lot of bin rummaging and up-ending in California and I've read people complaining about it in Ireland too.

Hopefully the local community will adapt eventually.

In one German city I was in recently, people made a habit of standing their empty bottles next to public bins, so that those desperate for a bit of money could easily pick them up and take them to the supermarket bottle return (and at 25 cents per bottle, it was a decent reward for a bit of effort).

I'm not fond of Monaco.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 01/08/2026 15:35

Southend was a shithole

Love valetta in Malta and also mdina but the rest was like a dirty building site.

the80sweregreat · 01/08/2026 15:39

Southend isn’t the best , but there are a few areas away from the main drag that are not too bad.
Much nicer beaches in Essex along Frinton and Walton.

I felt the same way about Bradford...although I'm sure day there in the summer hols for lunch and a museum is very different than wandering around at night.
