I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Just makes me depressed, it’s grey and miserable and the accent makes my eye twitch- that last part might just be me though 😅.

I have never once been happy to be in Leeds.

Wow cheek! Snob alert! 🤣

i don’t get the Malta hate, so much history. Did you just stick to Sliema or St Julien?

I agree sounds like they didn't leave Sliema, Valetta is one of my favourite places

@XelaM thank you for your detailed description. My step daughter’s boyfriend worked in Nigeria for a bit and she used to go and visit him there. She said they barely left the compound - I’m sure they were following good advice but I would find it very frustrating to be in a foreign country and unable to explore.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/08/2026 14:07

Isle of Sheppey.
Bolton.
Manchester City centre.
Sheffield.

I can't afford foreign travel right now, but when I can again (hopefully!) I will base my decisions on Phil Carr's recommendations!

You certainly wont be going to Luton then! Love Phil Carr

@Crikeyalmighty ,

As I said, Marrakech strikes me as a marmite place. Several on this thread mentioned hating it and several loved it. I am in the former camp.

I just didn’t really ‘get’ it. There are loads of places in the world with good hotels and food, and they also have other things to do. Marrakech just struck me as a giant bazaar selling tatty things and with nothing much cultural to look at or do for a city break.

Did you have your eyes closed?
We went to all sorts of interesting places, museums, historic houses and gardens in Marrakech; we also took a trip out to the Atlas mountains while we were there.
The botanical gardens were stunning and absolutely pristine (unlike scruffy Kew) with the biggest cacti you ever saw in your life!

ETA: the lanes (tunnels!), Riads and rooftops were amazing too.

What’s up with Delhi?

The air for a start. Barely breathable.

bellventrico · 01/08/2026 14:13

Marrakesh - hassled , got caught up in a riot ( terrifying) got food poisoning. Tried it a second time - went high end- stayed at the four seasons, hired a guide to take us around the Medina and recommend a restaurant - was violently ill afterwards.

WyrdHag · 01/08/2026 14:17

Nottingham - went to look at the uni for DD which was very nice tbf but the town centre was one of the weirdest places I've ever been.

7pm and there were teenagers being frisked by police, religious zealots spouting forth outside the town hall, a bunch of drugged up 20-somethings setting up decks in a disused shop doorway while their mates were bouncing around smoking spliffs.

And as we drove through the 'burbs to our hotel...little life size wooden children on the edges of the pavement to warn about kids crossing near a school - scares the shit out of me on a not particularly well lit country lane.

I don't think we even bothered with breakfast the following morning we were so desperate to get on the road.

Venice. It was extremely hot, expensive, busy and overrated. I felt so sick there.

Stayed in Mellieha, St pauls bay i believe did a day trip round the island, went on a boat trip and visited some underground old ww tunnels . Whilst Malta is beautiful and felt safe (other than the driving!) we were just really bored. We’re not sunbathers or drinkers we struggled to find enough to do.

No, it really isn’t, I didn’t spend all my time in the red light district 😬 this was coming out of the station and walking pretty much anywhere. Don’t remember much greenery at all unfortunately and this was only a couple of weeks ago.

It does have Vondelpark, an enormous green space. It has the Rijksmuseum, and Rembrandt house museum. It is very pretty at Christmas when the lights along the canals are lit up. The canal boat rides are also nice. De Bijenkorf has a very nice cafe.

The problem is the approach to the city. Sometimes you aren’t even out of Centraal Station, and the stink of weed permeates inside as someone on the edge of it is smoking/doping. It is kind of stomach turning. You kind of have to set aside the women trafficking for the red light district, and all the dope smells in your face. Interestingly there have been arrests this very week (in both Netherland and Romania) on trafficking , exploitation and abuse of women working in the Red light district. They were mainly Romanian women who had been lured there, and are then further exploited. Romanian nationals (male) were the traffickers, and pimps of these women. They took the vast amount of their earnings, and then made them pay protection money. Organised crime is behind a lot of the prostitution, so much for the new fake packaging of ‘sex work’ as ‘empowering’.

They say that Utrecht is the real ‘Dutch’ capital of the Netherlands. Still some weed, but doesn’t feel like Amsterdam. Leiden is nice too.

Below is archived from the NL Times: Romanian gang considered Amsterdam sex workers their property; Exploited dozens of women

I was a teenager when I went and it was so crowded, so expensive and you literally got to see so little. I can remember waiting for our transport back and feeling really sick as well.
Florence was a bit better but also so crowded.

Darkgreenbottle · 01/08/2026 14:22

Prague (wrong travelling companion...ex husband), Tunisia and Turkey (people trying to rip you off everywhere).

Growlybear83 · 01/08/2026 14:22

Llandudno. I’ve loved all the North African places that people have mentioned, and I love Malta

WoollyRosebud · 01/08/2026 14:23

In the UK, Monkeyworld in Dorset. Smelly and the monkeys didn't look healthy at all.

Abroad, Barcelona. Hated it there, sleazy. Horrible hotel, woke up to someone trying to get in through the balcony doors. If nothing else taught me to always check these as soon as you check in.

Dublassie · 01/08/2026 14:28

I really didn’t like Derry much ! Historic walk/ circle is lovely . The rest is awful .

Papyrophile · 01/08/2026 14:31

Legian, in Bali. Horrible hotel, bad food, and the street was full of cheap whores who brazenly propositioned Western men, even those clearly with their wife and DC.

bestcatlife · 01/08/2026 14:32

The only trip I ever cut short was Malaga. Didn’t like the vibe, hotel was next to a very grotty pub (my mistake) it pissed with rain all the time (can’t control the weather) on the whole I hated it. I know people that adore it.

does anyone have anything good to say about Stoke? I was considering moving there 😅😅 what about the surrounding areas like Newcastle under Lyme or Biddulph?

MinnieMountain · 01/08/2026 14:33

CountessBinface · 01/08/2026 13:38

Wisbech. Ugly town, ugly people and a general air of simmering menace.

Many moons ago when had a friend who lived near there the night club, police station and court were all next to each other. With good reason. It's also the only time I've been searched going into a club.

New York, people were rude from the moment we got inside JFK to when we were back on the plane home. Poor customer service too. The place is very overrated in our opinion. (Even our teens were underwhelmed. )

The rudest American tourists I encountered in my old job in tourism were from either New York or Chicago. Everyone else was friendly and polite.

I'll add Albania. Weird. Depressing. Clearly mob controlled.

And for those asking about Acapulco. Do you live under a rock or never check government travel advisories? Gang violence and kidnappings have made it unsafe for tourists for ages. Never trust a destination just because the pics look nice and the flight is a good deal.

I agree about Albania.

bestcatlife · 01/08/2026 14:39

Oh, also Maccyncleth (sp?) Wales - haunted.

Newport (S. Wales) grim! dated a guy there who In hindsight, was grim. Was gutted when he ghosted me (why?) 😄

Atlanta. It was like Croydon made ten times bigger and with ten times the traffic, heat and humidity.

As someone who lived in Croydon for the first 36 years of their life, this really made me lol. Leaving Croydon for a small Sussex town was the best thing I ever did.

I gave a friend's son a lift to East Croydon station a few weeks ago, because all the trains south of Coulsdon or somewhere were fucked. It was even worse than I remembered, and the pub that used to be my lovely local was empty and near derelict.

Poundbury. It’s got a very weird vibe. It’s the only time I’ve seen a fight in a Waitrose 🤣

Well, Charlie Boy has managed to keep that quiet! 😀
