I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

I was born in St P

Edited: never lived there (or russia) as an adult.

Hah I left when I was 5 years old and also never lived there as an adult. My last visit to Russia was probably 20 years ago. My teen daughter wants to go though so might have to brace myself and take her 😬

Turkey. We hired a car. Saw three fatal accidents because the locals don't follow their highway code.
The workers in the supermarkets and restaurants very rude.
The beaches so crowded with sunbeds you could touch the person next to you.

wishingonastar101 · 01/08/2026 13:31

Tunisia. The young men in the market kept making threats to kill us if we didn't buy their crap. Most aggressive place on earth!

ShesRunningOutTheDoor · 01/08/2026 13:31

Jaywick in Essex about 20 years ago. It felt like a shanty town (I think it pretty much was back then - no street lights, no paths, caravans turned into permanent homes) we cycled through it and I was scared - never been so relieved to get to Clacton in my life 🤣

Mansfield, Sutton in Ashfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, it's like travelling back to the 70's and not in a good way. Grimly depressing, very run down and flags a plenty.

I recommend you avoid Greece.

Trivandrum in India…. Basildon in england…

Had to walk through Basildon recently. I can only say - I am glad I am white and was wearing sports clothes! Not with my mixed race kids in my Boden frock...

I didn't like St Lucia. Massive cruise ships disgorging hordes of people into a tiny place made the towns and their surrounds unpleasant. Also, we couldn't go anywhere or sit down anywhere without being almost immediately pestered to buy a necklace or a trinket or to pay somebody to be a guide. There was a distinct undercurrent of hostility and an assumption that all western visitors must be rich and could therefore be fleeced for everything. It put me off the Caribbean, so I won't be returning.

Mymyi · 01/08/2026 13:36

Jakarta I think although some towns in India would also qualify but I can't remember their names.

No idea … never been to Liverpool.

Liverpool is lovely! Best city for shopping by far.

CountessBinface · 01/08/2026 13:38

Wisbech. Ugly town, ugly people and a general air of simmering menace.

Lowestoft or Agadir

Lowestoft is great if you like being out on the beaches, woods and parks but shit in the town centre now.

Agadir is awful.

What did you dislike about Norwich? It has so much history, I tend to think of it as York, without as much tourist tat or the massive crowds. It has some amazing places to visit in the city and if you venture just a couple of miles out there's even more.

As I said to some one else , perhaps we went to the wrong bit! We only went for an afternoon and ended up in quite a run down shopping centre area. I have a feeling we may have missed the main centre. I have no hard feelings about Norfolk in particular!

Hull. I am sure there are nice bits but we weren't in them.

I second that - it was horrible. Went for a wedding, struggled to get a taxi in the evening due to ‘the troubles’ (?!). More than happy to pay to get back over the Humber bridge.

I can remember seeing it on 24 Hours in Police Custody. Looked very eerie….

The tenderloin in san fran. Terrifying. Do. Not. Walk. There.

Some beautiful streets and then you turn a corner and there are are HUNDREDS of homeless people on drugs.

PenelopeAsks · 01/08/2026 13:45

Poundbury. It’s got a very weird vibe. It’s the only time I’ve seen a fight in a Waitrose 🤣

Newsenmum · 01/08/2026 13:45

What’s up with Delhi?

IdenticalHandTwin · 01/08/2026 13:47

Aleppo in Syria definitely the worst, I appreciate this is not on most people's bucket list though 😅 It was a long time ago during the Assad regime but bloody hell 😣

Lovemycat2023 · 01/08/2026 13:47

Crawley and Telford. Apologies to any MNetters who live there.

I had to visit for a study project (though was advised to take someone big with me). It is right at the bottom of the deprivation indices so not surprising how it feels. A lot of the homes are single skinned, poor quality and unmortgageable. Also under sea level (hence the big wall). When people complain about where I live (wealthy south east town, albeit with some deprived areas) I want to take them and show them Jaywick.

Newport in particular pillgwennlly and ringland

Oddly specific but I can't disagree!

Rotherham. Fuck me!!!!!

Southampton zoo was pretty shit too. If it weren't for the crappy Lego models, we wouldn't have seen anything remotely resembling an animal.

Do you mean Marwell?

I’ll admit I’ve been to better zoos but there is loads of animals there!

plominoagain · 01/08/2026 13:55

Southwold .

Went there with DH and kids for a day out because he used to deliver round there and raved about how nice it was . Was it buggery . The parking was atrocious , everything seemed to cost “how bloody much ? “ and then some , and everywhere was full of the consciously well heeled exclaiming “ Archie , let’s get some falafel “ The most pretentious place I’ve ever been . Apart from Holt , that is .

Oh, I love these threads. I haven't read any of the comments yet, but I just know that someone's written off an entire country as crap and horrible just because they visited a town somewhere and the weather was miserable or there wasn't any egg and chips and it was "all foreign muck" to eat 😂

Nope, but someone did write off a place for having eateries offering "full English breakfast" Is that the kind of comment you meant?

Delhi. I didn't mind the rest of India I saw, loved Jaipur and Goa but I hated Delhi.

I went to India years and went to Dheli. I found the poverty hard to see. Massive great big mansions with people sleeping in makeshift tents outside with absolutely nothing
