I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Marseille. Went in the early noughties for the day. A day I’ll never get back! Seemed really fun down, full of homeless people and wasn’t much to look at. It was 20 years ago so maybe it’s better now

Buscobel · 01/08/2026 13:02

I don’t think Havant is great, but I don’t think it qualifies as one of the worst.

Doodledoggle · 01/08/2026 12:29

@Crikeyalmighty we stayed in 2018 and spent a small fortune on trying to find proper restaurants with real food 🤣

I imagine it's even pricier now.

Yep - I go to the same places over and over again in West Hollywood!! And yep it’s bloody pricey unless you want to live on burgers and chips, I don’t like tex mex either- so that rules a fair few places out - my favourites were several Japanese ones down melrosezarea, a really decent Chinese next to the Roxy on sunset, nothing to look at but excellent food -.the rainbow bar and grill- scuzzy rock bar kind of place but food was really good and a fish/high end kind of place on sunset ( where we shared and had extra chips and salad) - and the Italian at laurel canyon ( love it ) we learnt to fill up at Mel’s diner ( love it) at lunch time!!!

Tijuana, Mexico in 2008.
We were in San Diego for a couple of days so decided to walk over the border. No queue and no checks to get into the country, we just walked through an open gate, but we spent longer queuing to get back into the US than we spent walking around Tijuana. Saying that though, we felt so uncomfortable that we spent less than an hour walking around. Our youngest son was 7 at the time and he had kids smaller than him coming up to him and begging.

I went go Tijuana for the day in the early noughties. I hid cash in my sock in case we needed to bribe anyone. Was an experience but not one I need to repeat!

Was in Blackpool yesterday, yes agree the resort is very rough, but we just went for the beach, which is miles long and dgc was running in and out of the waves. Happy on sand and with a picnic only bought ice creams. Beach is as good as anywhere. Very happy day out, only complaint was seagull got my ham roll lol. That was the only poor behaviour I saw

XelaM · 01/08/2026 13:06

But then I have actually been to the HELL that is Lagos (Nigeria) so everywhere feels like a safe haven compared to that

@XelaM What sort of hell?

I don't even know how to put it all into words. I was there with a friend who is local and invited me to visit his family. If I had been there alone it is not an exaggeration that I probably would not have come back alive. He literally had to hold my hand to even get out of the airport because people were so menacing.

The roads are mainly dirt roads filled with enormous crowds of a mix of old banged up vehicles, animals on the loose, some crazy motorcycles that transport people and go in between the chaos. Traffic jams literally last hours and hours. On the side roads there are barefoot kids, women trying to sell drinks on their heads, what look like broken shacks that people live in. There's no electricity or running water in the majority of homes (including the one I stayed in although they were middle class).

The heat and humidity (and dust from the dirt roads) makes it unbearable and I felt like I couldn't breathe. You constantly feel like you will be bitten by something. I was terrified of eating or drinking anything local because it felt like I was going to get ill and never escape.

It was honestly how I picture Hell.

Although I stayed with locals, so it may be slightly less horrific if you stay in a 5 * hotel.

Cornflake ; it’s an interesting question isn’t it , why do people travel. I guess it’s because it’s there , some like to see different places or visit a certain place or just for a break from being at home. People in the uk liked the weather abroad , but with summers here just as hot now , maybe that might taper off. I can see a time the governments won’t want us traveling at all because of climate change so they will make it impossible and expensive and only the rich will be able to go on holiday or if it’s for work. Some holidays work out cheaper abroad and some all inclusive hotels are still good value for families. Some countries are very beautiful and just a bit different to being at home.
I’m not a huge traveler myself these days , but I can see why people do it or want an adventure. Unfortunately it’s more expensive now to get anywhere and airports are hassle.

Love all these types of threads as I've never been out of the UK & they convince me that I'm not missing much!
I'd like to ask, though, & not being sarcastic, why DO you all travel? What do you get out of it? If it's good, do the memories stay with you? Was it worth the expense? I'm a 'prefer an empty beach or walk through woods' girl, so a lot of glitz & glamour would be wasted on me!

For me I travelled a lot when I was younger and more to see different cultures and just explore. I went to some beautiful places and some not so beautiful but the things I really remember are the people I met and my experiences rather than if somewhere was awful. Cairo for me was the worst place physically that I visited. Just a crazy overcrowded and very noisy city but it’s a place I will never ever forget as it opened my eyes to another world, I was only 19 when there so in all honestly it was probably a bit of a culture shock.

The UK is a beautiful country so plenty to see here and never leave in my opinion. I love my UK hols.

My memories of York are sadly tainted

Betty's had just run out of curd tarts.

A mushroom risotto which was the only vegetarian option turned out to be a heap of boiled rice with some fried mushrooms in a cream sauce poured over the top. Disclaimer. This was not at Betty’s.

I will have to give it another chance one day.

I can recommend Sicily. I had a wonderful holiday there. It's fantastic. Only bad bit was a man who tried to sell me a beach towel and then practically spat at me when I said 'no. "

I know. Why do woke ppl feel the need to shove the wokery in everyone's face. Im.not against woke ideas, but I am.sudpicious that a fsir few loke yo show off the 'coolness.' Which isnt very genuine or cool.

No I loved the Philippines! Where did you go? I had the best time and want to go back!

Lloret de Mar, H top hotel. Full of drunk German lads. The resort is a dump. Not a great choice for my first solo trip abroad.

Yes, my parents said that about their visit to India. Skinny cows roaming the streets, unbelievable poverty and dirt and chaos across the road from palaces. Aggressive monkeys 🙊 and everyone in their tour group got food poisoning.

Can anyone recommend a Greek island that is quite laid back and not too touristy without being too sleepy ?

KnickerlessParsons · 01/08/2026 13:17

Lowestoft or Agadir

the80sweregreat · 01/08/2026 13:21

I’ve been to a few Greek islands in the past and found Poros to be the most unspoilt. It was 37 odd years ago though! You do have to get a boat over from Athens.
I also liked Kathelonia ( wrong spelling I think ) but again that was a long time ago.
The party Greek islands are probably a lot different though.

Norwich. And Swansea services. An airport in Crete.

What did you dislike about Norwich? It has so much history, I tend to think of it as York, without as much tourist tat or the massive crowds. It has some amazing places to visit in the city and if you venture just a couple of miles out there's even more.

Athens - felt very claustrophobic, dirty and was constantly on guard.
Was so disappointed as I’d wanted to go for years.

I love Athens, it's the only city I visit repeatedly. I do generally love Greece though.

Lol, it is a culture shock for sure but a lot of what you have said is highly exagerated - where in Lagos was you to have no electricity or running water? I have been to different parts and all had both - only sometimes the power goes off. Perhaps if you are leaving Lagos city there are dirt roads but inner city is mostly tarmaced/concrete albeit poorly maintained in many parts. Agree about being in 'go slows' for hours and the air quality being poor. The food is fine (love nigerian food and I ate from various vendors across Lagos) and just stick to bottled water.

Florida - did the whole Disney thing for the kids and it felt false. I’m sure there’s lovely parts, but we didn’t see them.
Paris - dirty, rude people, over priced.
Bangkok - dirty, very poor people living in shacks, noisy, smelly. No thanks.

Florida always feels false round the Orlando area because it is false! I disliked Key West though,it's a wonderful drive down though but the town itself is a lot of nothing.
