I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Ingoldmells by Skegness. Full of tacky markets selling vapes, chavy knock off clothes and harnsses for staffy type dogs.

Then there's the theme park surrounded by fast food eateries, the place stank of fried donuts.

No charm in the slightest. Not one redeeming nice feature in the place, couldn't wait to get out of there.

But apparently it used to be much nicer before they built the massive market place and built karaoke bars by the beach.

girliepop · 01/08/2026 12:29

Magaluf

Doodledoggle · 01/08/2026 12:29

@Crikeyalmighty we stayed in 2018 and spent a small fortune on trying to find proper restaurants with real food 🤣

I imagine it's even pricier now.

Newbutoldfather · 01/08/2026 12:30

@Crikeyalmighty ,

As I said, Marrakech strikes me as a marmite place. Several on this thread mentioned hating it and several loved it. I am in the former camp.

I just didn’t really ‘get’ it. There are loads of places in the world with good hotels and food, and they also have other things to do. Marrakech just struck me as a giant bazaar selling tatty things and with nothing much cultural to look at or do for a city break.

These threads always make me think I must be drawn to qualities others are repelled by
i I absolutely love
Amsterdam
Athens
naples
marrakesh
rome
scarborough
bodrum

and how can you hate the whole of Portugal based on one visit and location 😂 Porto and Lisbon are amazing places to visit

My experience of Naples was positive, but I'd travelled there with my husband direct from Sorrento by train for a day trip so we didn't see the 'rough' areas.

My dad loved it, but he was in a Displaced Persons' Camp just outside city after the war and I guess that once you've survived WW2, anything else is a bonus.

Shabby Victorian town with a nice view. When the guidebook has to pick the Wetherspoons as the best pub in town, you’re scraping.

I'll always remember Oban and Fort William . I was about 10. Went on a holiday to West Scotland coz my dad was Scottish and I think he was takong us up to see where we came from.originally..( Ive always lived in England) We were upstairs in a place having Scottish afternoon tea in Fort William.and I looked oit the window and dead opposite was a dentists and I could literally see a person tipped back in a black chair while I was eating my potato scones. I was horrified. It made an absolutely huge impression and I promised myself I would always look after my teeth. Years later I remember thinkong aboit it and wondering who would be so dumb as to set up a cafe opposite a dentist that didnt even have a curtain up to mask what was going on.

fishbowlee · 01/08/2026 11:23

@GingerdeadMansurely it was worth it for the lols later! 😆

Yes, the theme park was a 'so bad its good' type experience.

The Quality hotel was not!

localnotail · 01/08/2026 12:36

Munich. I went in October, it was miserable and streets looked like I'm back in Soviet Union. The food was horrendous. It was boring. Like, literally, I liked nothing about the place.

On the other hand, I visited Berlin recently and loved it

WearyAuldWumman · 01/08/2026 12:37

My husband's first job was in forestry in Fersit, Lochaber.

He always used to refer to Fort William as 'an end of the loch dump'. Possibly a bit harsh.

localnotail · 01/08/2026 12:38

Also, Moscow. Huge sprawling fake city with massive ugly statues and dirt poor suburbs.

Loved Naples!! the noise, the people, the art, historic centre, vesuvious, everything

Loved Naples, went there on my own with young DC - never felt threatened? Wandered all over the place. The only thong I disliked were graffiti everywhere but I guess its part of its make up!

That's true 😂 (and I was born there). The only thing worth visiting is the Red Square. Otherwise you should go to St Petersburg

Stuckforlong · 01/08/2026 12:41

Malta is awful , not worth the money or time . Turkey harassed to buy things , also harassed to tip transfer bus driver .

I didn’t get on very well with Hunstanton, I found it miserable, uninviting and the beaches nothing to write home about compared to what we have nearer to home in the Northeast.

I agree about Hunstanton. Found it really depressing, though we were there in April so maybe it improves with sunshine. I love the beaches in the NE!

Wow. We found it the complete opposite. Super friendly 😮

We’ve been to New York numerous times and have never had a problem. We’ve never encountered any rudeness and customer service has always been excellent. We’ve always found it a very family friendly city to visit.

@oldFoolMe- bored in Malta? There’s so much to see. Very historical island.

Have these people not been to the Hypogeum or the megalithic Tarxien temples or Saint Paul's Roman catacombs in Rabat, so many really interesting places to see. It was a great holiday.

areshan · 01/08/2026 12:47

Benidorm

38thparallel · 01/08/2026 12:48

But then I have actually been to the HELL that is Lagos (Nigeria) so everywhere feels like a safe haven compared to that

@XelaM What sort of hell?

Egypt for me was awful. I remember being about 13 with blonde hair and men just constantly came up to me grabbing and stroking my hair. It scared me to death

Similar in Tunisia, mid 90’s, awful experience.

Oh I loved Florence 🥰 to be fair one of the gelato bars ( and I mean one which had the good gelato in the covered metal tins ) the woman serving had a face like a smacked arse despite me ordering ours in Italian .
Everywhere else they were polite and one waitress took a liking to us because I spoke in Italian , I tried my best and then it was like we were her besties 🤣 I didn’t like the queues for certain museums ( and that was off season ) but I’d go back off season again

Edited

I felt they were fed up of tourists in general tbh. Understandably I suppose as it was packed even in the winter. Enjoyed pise for an afternoon though.

MadisonAvenue · 01/08/2026 12:55

Tijuana, Mexico in 2008.
We were in San Diego for a couple of days so decided to walk over the border. No queue and no checks to get into the country, we just walked through an open gate, but we spent longer queuing to get back into the US than we spent walking around Tijuana. Saying that though, we felt so uncomfortable that we spent less than an hour walking around. Our youngest son was 7 at the time and he had kids smaller than him coming up to him and begging.

cornflakecrunchie · 01/08/2026 12:57

Love all these types of threads as I've never been out of the UK & they convince me that I'm not missing much!
I'd like to ask, though, & not being sarcastic, why DO you all travel? What do you get out of it? If it's good, do the memories stay with you? Was it worth the expense? I'm a 'prefer an empty beach or walk through woods' girl, so a lot of glitz & glamour would be wasted on me!

GreenCandleWax · 01/08/2026 13:00

Tijuana, Mexico. Awful town. I am sure the rest of the country is great though.

veryworried1988 · 01/08/2026 13:00

Well, its all subjective isn't it.

I don't mind a day trip to Skegness but hate Blackpool.
I love Lanzarote, Menorca and Nerja but wasn't keen on Paris, Rome, Genoa and Amsterdam.
Loved Las Vegas but didn't like New York.
Off to Gibraltar soon for a few days so we'll see.

But overall I would say Tunisia was the worst of the worst.
