Yorkshire ppl are quite self satisfied. The ones Ive met anyway. They pride themselves on ot.

I love Yorkshire! As a Londoner I find everyone there so friendly, not at all self satisfied.

Agree to some extent with Brighton. I grew up nearby and later it became the default social meet-up place for my friends, so this is borne out of years and years of going there.

It has a self-satisfied, superior atmosphere that I’ve not seen in many other places (closest comparison is in parts of Bristol). Some areas there can be like a concentrated pool of the most annoying, smug people. It’s like the joke -

“how do you know someone went to Oxbridge?”
”don’t worry, they’ll tell you”

but instead “how do you know someone lives in Brighton?”

I know. Why do woke ppl feel the need to shove the wokery in everyone's face. Im.not against woke ideas, but I am.sudpicious that a fsir few loke yo show off the 'coolness.' Which isnt very genuine or cool.

While I liked Cornwall, the Eden Project was a letdown.

Thinking about it, I went donkeys years ago. DH says it was on the second leg of our honeymoon so 2003. It was fabulous but things change of course.

I love Yorkshire too. Never met friendlier people. One of the best places in the UK!

Swanland just outside is lovely for a walk around.
Beverley and Beverley Westwood - get a Burgess Ice Cream if it's still a thing.
Humber Bridge Country Park (Little Switzerland) near the Humber Bridge Car park used to be nice for a walk.
The museums in the museum quarter and the old town is nice. Wilberforce House and Street life museum. Look for The land of Green Ginger
High street has a lot of films/Netflix series filmed there as it looks quite Victorian.
Drive up to Bridlington on a nice day for a walk in the beach and fish and chips.

Thanks for the reply. Have been enjoying exploring places outside Hull (Beverley, Brid, the beach, York, Hornsea and so on), it's a lovely area in general. But the pp was speaking about Hull specifically which is somewhere I'm yet to explore much. So was wondering if there were any recommendations (other than the park by the bridge which we've been to and the museums/marina/deep which have been mentioned on here a lot) :)

Luton. Dreary, drab and I didn’t feel safe. I left the first chance I got.

Badbadbunny · 01/08/2026 11:53

Mombassa (Kenya). Horrible place, horrible people, crime ridden and felt very unsafe especially on the ferry where "locals" were openly snatching jewelry and watches off tourists, and all the begging everywhere too! But once outside Mombassa, Kenya was awesome.

If you haven’t been to Birkenhead, you are not missing out.
If my memory serves me well I every city in the UK in the early 80’s was filthy - the buildings were absolutely covered in dirt.
I have a memory of getting the train to London - 1984 - and how grimy the terraced houses were on the last part of the journey into Euston.
My mum - very Hyacinth - couldn’t wait to tell everyone how filthy everyone’s net curtains were, even the Queen’s. Harrods was magical, though. I’d never seen anything like it before.
Last time I went they still had that awful memoriam to Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed. Grim.
I loved it there at the turn of the century. Would we get in the Met Bar?* Who would we see out? It was a really exciting time, the place felt really alive and hopeful.
*We got in once. It was the size of a shoebox and neither Liam Gallagher nor Jude Law were there. It was full of blondes with tiny, low cut jeans, Dior saddlebags and a nose for footballers.
Then we’d get the train home back to reality. I never, ever saw Kate Moss, nobody did although we all looked. I did see Dean Gaffney in Tiger Tiger though.

Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire. Was told it was a quaint market town. It turned out to be a boarded up dump, with a Wetherspoons as it's only redeeming feature.

Whoever told you that was playing a practical joke. At best, it's a functional county town.

Gatwick Airport

I raise you: "Gatwick Airport when the fire alarm has gone off, you've had to stand outside in the sun for an hour, have been assured that all the flights will be delayed and then they call the flight on time when you need to get to the other end of the terminal."

Morocco, shithole and full of outrageous sex pests. Scared me.

I went to Dublin in 1982 while on holiday in N Wales. I was shocked at how expensive a coffee was. Walked round all day and just didnt enjoy it. Maybe I didnt know where to go. Mind you, I'd gone over on a night ferry and was really tired and not in the best of moods. Have always wanted to go back but dont ever seem to get round to it. And also have the feeling that a holiday in Ireland would be incredibly expensive these days? Anyone got any tips about how to have a cheap holiday in Ireland ?....or zScotland for thst matter.

Pisa, near the airport. Dirty and run down. Any Ikea or retail park. The Glades Bromley car park entrance/exit, like driving up and down a helter skelter.

Ha! Not been to The Glades since before covid because of that car park

We spent 6 nights in the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, our room looked into the Chinese theatre.

You are correct about Hollywood, it's absolutely filthy and so many sad/mentally ill homeless people.

However I have to say that the Roosevelt was like a little 5 star oasis from the grit outside! I spent my days being served cremant by out of work actors and swimming in the stunning pool.

My children were in heaven. They spent the days eating nachos. And it was very close to Warner Bros tour which was our main reason for going.

But I did try to go for a run one morning and didn't get very far it felt very unsafe.

We go for work and the Montrose is West Hollywood is our place of choice- massive rooms, lovely roof top pool, pretty hotel, free wine hour, free coffee in reception, all very ‘jolly’ and loads of bars and cafes within 5 minutes walk - love it - we pop to laurel canyon stores in the car for breakfast . Proper Hollywood though - er just no - I stick to West Hollywood, the grove, Santa Monica, Beverley hills and gave a fab time- USthiugh is really expensive these days in nice areas if you don’t want to live on crap

I like all those too with exception of Naples, but in fairness to it the Royal Naples Marina bit was lovely !! Apart from that far too much rubbish, but the bin people had been on strike for months when we went - it was certainly ‘authentic’ - really don’t get the Athens hate, it has some fabulous bits and many hotels have that amazing lit up view of the acropolis at night. Maybe some people don’t like the hot, dusty slightly shabby vibe you get in places like this - I really loved Istanbul too and fantastic food to boot

Dominican Republic. Harrassment 100%.

Newbutoldfather · 01/08/2026 12:18

Three come to mind:

The Gambia: went there many many years ago as a cheap break. The whole thing felt incredibly exploitative and the obvious grinding poverty anywhere outside tourist hotels was upsetting.

Lahore, Pakistan: Maybe I am being harsh as I got really bad food poisoning and it definitely was an interesting place. But the food was really hard to eat (even before getting ill) and there was an air of faded grandeur with everything feeling like it was decaying.

Marrakech: This seems to be a marmite place but there seemed little to do there bar luxury hotels and that big square and market! And crossing the road was an adventure. I liked the food but just found the overall experience disappointing.

mondaytosunday · 01/08/2026 12:20

Miami. Stopped there on way to Belize for our honeymoon and it was nothing bad particularly but dull and quiet. We were staying in one of those iconic art deco hotels but the room was not very nice, and the dining room closed even though they put lit candles on every table. So off we went to hunt for a nice restaurant (this was pre Google days) and it just wasn’t all that. I guess if you are in the know or have one of those amazing oceanfront mansions you might have fun but we were very disappointed.

MarilynMerlot · 01/08/2026 12:20

Luton.

viques · 01/08/2026 12:21

My memories of York are sadly tainted

Betty's had just run out of curd tarts.

A mushroom risotto which was the only vegetarian option turned out to be a heap of boiled rice with some fried mushrooms in a cream sauce poured over the top. Disclaimer. This was not at Betty’s.

I will have to give it another chance one day.

I liked Marrakech but am capable of coping with a bit of hassle - much preferred it to Dubai for a week of sun and a flash hotel out of season , way cheaper and food was excellent - I found it much less hassle than Egypt but then again husband is very good at dealing with hasslers -

Gibraltar. Just uninspiring.

How did you want it to inspire you? I suppose you went since the border eased, when the border was totally closed it was great but we were living/working there and not doing the tourist thing. There is some amazing history there if you know where to look.
A couple of months before we left we decided we wanted a couple of touristy things, Moroccan leather pouffes, and in a local shop I actually laughed when he quoted a price, 'I think I teach your daughter (name)', he apologised and they were suddenly 75% cheaper! Been back once and it's now Essex by the Sea, lots of bling, false tans, tombstone teeth etc.
