I loved Amsterdam. We had a lovely river trip along the canals, visited art galleries and the Anne Frank house. Loads of quirky shops. Beautiful flowers everywhere. Will definitely return one day.

Re :Amersterdam- (I've been twice and really loved it . )
Honestly anyone and Everyone knows that it is famous for many things but amongst them is The Red Light District and their rather liberal attitude to drugs .

We (DH and I) went there , then went back with adult DD for a Christmas Market Visit .
Beautiful City , beautiful railway station. Worst bit is the cyclists but they are no where near as bad a London.

I;d avoid Soho as I don't want to wander into the sleaze but I expect someone will say its not that bad now .

Me too.
DD lived there for a while at the top of a tall skinny house! Had such fun visiting and cycling everywhere. And I wish we had posh corner shops like Albert Heijn!

I literally just shuddered reading that. Total deal-breaker for me!

It certainly was for me...Am a terrible flyer but couldn't wait to get back on the plane 😄

Croydon

fishbowlee · 01/08/2026 11:11

Croydon is a borough, do people mean Croydon high st?

Brighton.
Dirty, scruffy and a ‘beach’ that looks like a builders yard. The traffic was horrendous, the people I met were cold. It was just a very miserable experience. I won’t ever go again voluntarily.

Yes - we went to Brighton a couple of years back ( October so not high season)
Parking is ££ , we booked a hotel with onsite parking as I wasn't going to drive round searching
Massive homeless problem.
Loads of run down/closed up./derelict buildings while people live on the streets .
Everyone seems to have a dog and go down to the beach , which is a load of pebbles and shingle .

Didn't help that there was a Bin Collection strike . Thankfuly it wasn't hot or the stench would be unbearable . Rats though .

Best bit was the vegan food ,

Because over tourism and second homes have turned large parts of Cornwall into a theme park.

So what do you expect to when you visit a theme park out of season?

you are right of course but I answered the question as asked.

Portugal - I was very ill there and had to extend my stay there as I was so ill that I couldn't even fly home! 🙄

Inverness - An extremely long journey for nothing (Sorry Scotland!). Didn't even see Nessie! 😁

Brighton - Didn't match the hype. 🪨

Flinderskleepers · 01/08/2026 11:19

Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire. Was told it was a quaint market town. It turned out to be a boarded up dump, with a Wetherspoons as it's only redeeming feature.

Naples - run down and menacing - NEVER again!

Oh god yes, I have never run so quickly back to a train station clutching my bag so tightly as when I was in Naples. So dodgy

Florida. I caught Covid on the flight out. It was unbelievably hot and humid. The whole place felt fake. I truly hated it.

Havent been, but think it looks and sounds awful

MyDeepAmberDog · 01/08/2026 11:21

Turkey. Went with uni mates on a cheap package deal. Genuinely terrifying - men tried to grab/drag me off the street, local females wanned me not to go near Turkish baths as i'd get raped etc.

I would NEVER go back even if someone offered me a 5 star trip for free.

GingerdeadMan · 01/08/2026 11:22

A theme park somewhere in the wilds of Texas.

Highlights were a disused oil well and a cave.

It was hilariously shite. A staff member actually said 'you ain't from round these parts, are ya' in a cowboy film stylee.

Also - the Quality hotel next to Glasgow train station. Shudder.

Dudley Zoo.

Most miserable upsetting place. (This was years ago. I hope it’s changed.)

Along these lines - Paris zoo. Victorian - too small enclosures for all the animals. I cried when I saw the giant tortoises, it was incredibly sad. On the flip side Berlin zoo was beautiful and the animals looked well cared for and happy.

fishbowlee · 01/08/2026 11:23

@GingerdeadMansurely it was worth it for the lols later! 😆

Malta - i was so bored! Also went to the algarve Portrugal and didn’t enjoy it at all, it was expensive, couldn’t find anything other than english food and bars which is the opposite of what i want on holiday. Id love to return to portrugal but not there.

I went to Algarve on 1980s and didnt like it at all.

Whaaaa?!? Are you for real?

Shabby Victorian town with a nice view. When the guidebook has to pick the Wetherspoons as the best pub in town, you’re scraping.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 01/08/2026 08:56

Yorkshire is huge how can you write the whole place off and everyone who lives there with one visit?

Yorkshire ppl are quite self satisfied. The ones Ive met anyway. They pride themselves on ot.

Chocolatefreak · 01/08/2026 11:32

Boreded · 01/08/2026 00:29

And it STINKS

Yes, agree. Went to NY for work and it looked scruffy and dull. Plus the relentless advertising EVERYWHERE, even on a screen in the taxis. Was working in London at the time and came back thinking what a beautiful and clean city it looked in comparison!

I didn't think I would like Florida but was persuaded to try it....

I absolutely fell in love with the place! I would go back there in a heartbeat! 🌴

"Nice" view? Kerrera, Mull, Lismore, Morvern are nice? You've been eating too much square sausage.

I go every year for 4 or 5 days, pop to Haarlem and Utrecht and The Hague too- all lovely - Amsterdam does have a few awful sleazy streets near the station but I just avoid that bit

Hurghada - awful place

Completely agree. Horrendous few days there but I loved the rest of Egypt.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/08/2026 11:39

Pisa, near the airport. Dirty and run down. Any Ikea or retail park. The Glades Bromley car park entrance/exit, like driving up and down a helter skelter.
