I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Naples - run down and menacing - NEVER again!

Yes, we found Naples scary, and the taxi ride from the airport was the most terrifying ever!

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 01/08/2026 10:31

Tangier. Got off the ferry from Spain and instantly hassled really aggressively. We went on the overnight train from there to Marrakesh and then onto to Essaouira which were both much more chilled, especially Essaouira, but Tangier was awful.

It’s funny how we all have different opinions- I’ve lived in Moscow and loved it whilst most people hated it!

What’s up with Prestatyn? I have a holiday booked there soon 😫

Prestatyn is fine, I think the experience was probably coloured by a stay at the now closed Pontins holiday camp, just off to take the dog a ramble over the dunes now.

Alberta Holiday Park, Seasalter. Chance of a kicking: 9/10

Manchester! No offence intended to those from there! Went there some years ago.

Been once, never again. The HUGE number of smokers/vapers. I was walking down Trafford Wharf Road and got leapt on by a couple who were soooo excited. They spun me around and said ''THAT'S THE STUDIO WHERE CORONATION STREET IS FILMED!'' I told them I couldn't care less about that or any other soaps, and walked off!

I went to a cafe for a mug of tea and a Full English, but the woman on the till was colder than ice, tea was mostly cold, and the breakfast was barely warm and like it had been on the floor for 3 weeks. Then, to make things worse, after leaving without paying because it was so piggin' genuinely awful, and I refused to touch it, .... thankfully the one woman on duty was in the loo at the time .... I went to another cafe, ordered a bacon, maple syrup and pancake and a can of Coke; they were edible but I got a vicious dose of food poisoning.

I got back on the train and refused point blank to ever go back!

I went to Tunisia about twenty years ago for a family holiday. Let's just say the highlight of the trip was being stuck in the room with the flu for most of it. El Djem was cool though 😅

Wow, three places I think are great 🤣

Same!

Booked a hotel in neasden for my London trip after being assured I would see the "authentic" London. It's a violent grimy dump. Eat like the locals means salmonella chicken and battered dog legs.

I raise you Harlesden…..

JoyousWriter · 01/08/2026 10:39

Berlin.

Like a dirty Coventry.

Yes, i know everyone else loves it so please don't bother telling me I'm wrong!

Tunisia for the reasons already mentioned

We had similar on a one-night visit to Priština, Kosovo in 1983. A group of British students on a Serbo-Croatian course. (The course was one week at Belgrade Uni, one at Novi Sad uni and then a week touring mainly monasteries in Serbia.)

For most of our three weeks, we'd been booked into B class hotels - probably the equivalent of 3 star here. They'd all been lovely. In Priština, we were booked into an A-class hotel for one night. The hotel was their equivalent of 5 star. A lovely building, but dirty. Our room contained an ashtray with cigarette stubs, etc.

It wasn't safe for women to be out on the streets on their own. We did go out for a walk, but I don't recall seeing one single woman out on the streets. I've since been told that Kosovar Albanians didn't allow their women to leave their family domiciles. Infamously, it was reported that the mayor of Priština at that time had said that if only more Serbian women became prostitutes, then there would be no need for rapes.

The hotel advertised a 'disco', so we went along. The equivalent of £5 to get in - very expensive, so we declined. We had to elbow our way out and back to our rooms. We were being grabbed by a group of men all wearing fezzes. (I have no idea why - we didn't see men wearing that headgear outside the hotel.)

It turned out that the 'disco' was actually a strip show.

We were relieved to leave the next day.

I wouldn't take what people on this thread say to heart 😂 I mean some people hate Italy, Greece, South of France etc.

The Italy and Greece ones blow my mind. The hearts of Roman and Greek civilisation! Italy especially has every kind of scenery and experience, from mountains, to beaches, to vineyards, to fashion to fabulous cities. Surely something for everyone?!

Dominican Republic...only due to the tarantula I saw in the restaurant on day 2.Don't think I slept for the next 10 days.Beautiful place and lovely people but there was no recovery from that...twas the size of a dinner plate.

I literally just shuddered reading that. Total deal-breaker for me!

RanchRat · 01/08/2026 10:47

Hull seems to have a bit of a pong about it.

Agree with Athens. We went last year and I hated it. Dirty, busy, every second building was derelict, never seen as much graffiti in my life, sketchy people hanging around, aggressive begging on the underground. The museums doesn't make up for it.

Majorca, hated how busy and built up it was and would not ever go back. By contrast loved Menorca which is a lot more laid back.

Stornoway - the rest of Lewis and Harris is just stunning, the Castle is great but the town itself is a total let down.

Other smaller places - Slough, Larkhall, Beith, Wishaw, Airdrie.

I LOVED Athens but we didn't venture away from the nice part. Also love Majorca but have only ever been to the North of the island - Puerto Pollensa and Cala St Vincentt which isn't built up at all. I think it just depends on which area you stay in.

Superhansrantowindsor · 01/08/2026 10:51

Brighton.
Dirty, scruffy and a ‘beach’ that looks like a builders yard. The traffic was horrendous, the people I met were cold. It was just a very miserable experience. I won’t ever go again voluntarily.

Iamblossom · 01/08/2026 10:53

Id say las Vegas.

Dh has selected Havant

Kensington. The place has no soul.

Agree - same as Chelsea, Belgravia, Mayfair……same feeling as out of season seaside resort due to unused second homes / empty investment properties

Orangebadger · 31/07/2026 22:48

what you are describing is the red light district which I totally agree is grim. But get away from there and Amsterdam is beautiful, green and very clean.

Agree with this. The red light District is dirty Sleazy and full of creeps. Once you get outside of that area, it’s lovely.

TheDenimPoet · 01/08/2026 10:56

Some of these really shock me. I feel like DMing you all and telling you the amazing things in the places you hate! Honestly, there are some places you can't possibly have explored properly if you hate them..

..although I can't argue with Birmingham!

LooksLikeIPickedTheWrongWeekToQuitDrinking · 01/08/2026 10:58

Such strange suggestions! This thread is supposed to be WORST place you’ve been; if that’s truly Amsterdam for some of you, I can only assume you live in a palace and don’t travel much!

I know, right?

I think some people struggle to understand the difference between 'what's the worst place you've ever been?' and 'Which holiday destinations didn't live up to your expectations.'

ohyesiseethatnow · 01/08/2026 11:01

Tunisia. So much poverty and constant scamming. Nothing was pleasant. Some people might have been friendly but it was impossible to tell because we quickly realised that everybody had an agenda, an angle, a script…some of them better than others, some of them we thought were quite nice until their scam became apparent.

Can’t really blame them. It was easy to see what an utterly relentless struggle just to survive every day was for them.

I’d hate to live in a county like that so do have so much sympathy for them. But I will never go back. It was stressful, dirty, nerve wracking and unpleasant.

Placestogo · 01/08/2026 11:02

Trivandrum in India…. Basildon in england…
