What is the worst place you have ever visited?

I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

These threads always cheer me up about being skint and not holidaying for years. Ive not been to most places here, thankfully.

I’ve travelled a lot and I can’t really think of a ‘worst’ place. There is always something interesting about them. At a push I’d say I find San Francisco disconcerting, that chasm between the wealth and the very visible mentally ill homeless people.

Brighton. Dirty and lots of aggressive beggars , I had one follow me down the street and called me a bitch for not giving him money.
Gibraltar, filthy and grim. The rock and the monkeys are awful.

Dear god yes, miserable. Horrible place.

We almost didn't bother going to San Francisco on our California trip because of fears that it would be like that. As it was, while we did see evidence of the huge drugs and homelessness problem in the city, we didn't stay among it or feel surrounded by it. And what we did see felt tragic and pathetic rather than threatening or dangerous. San Francisco was absolutely beautiful and so interesting, I'm so glad we didn't let that fear of grottiness or a lack of safety stop us seeing going.

LA on the other hand, we swerved, apart from the Getty Centre which was great. I'd heard LA was heaving with traffic, urban, druggy, dirty and dangerous, impossible to walk anywhere and generally a disappointment. There simply wasn't enough that we wanted to see there to make us bother with it for more than one night staying on the outskirts. We arrived in time to see the Getty Centre for the afternoon and left the following morning.

I can confirm that there is a perma-haze of weed all over California though.

Milton Keynes is a weird place.
LA - it's just roads.
Scarborough - I hate to dis seaside towns but we were in the rough end and the experience made me rethink how I holiday in future 😂

Brighton has to be one of the most unpleasant places to visit. I've no idea why people are so rude there.

Yes we did Sam Francisco and Vegas on the same trip. I was worried both would be as awful as LA but I really liked both places and they felt so much safer.
LA I only felt safe in the car and the hotel.

I should stop reading them, they annoy me! People writing off the most amazing places on the basis of one visit 🙄

Not too long ago I read a comment by someone who described the entire country of Italy as "a shithole".

I moved to Gosport in the 90’s from a rural village. It was truly awful except the ferry to Portsmouth 😁

Reminds me of an Australian friend who came to the UK on holiday and built an itinerary that took in various charming, historic, quintessential places she'd always dreamt of seeing. One such place was the home of Shakespeare with it's narrow cobbled streets full of wonky Elizabethan buildings. She accidentally went to Stoke On Trent. 😂

She did cheer herself up by buying some pottery though.

This was years ago (dd was in the buggy and she's 19 next week)

I'll never forget some woman screaming 'HES GOT A BAD HEART!' as some rat faced shoplifter was laid,kicking off best he could on the floor with handcuffs on

We where walking past with our jaws swinging

Ah the good old days,now they wouldn't bother coming out even if rat faced shoplifter had stabbed the guard and ran off with the whole contents of boots

It did make me laugh that they put the dummies in plastic boxes with alarms

I must have been the only person in hull that paid with real money for them

Went to Stoke on the way home from York (I live in the South) a few years ago. Stopped purely for the Emma Bridgewater Factory and couldn’t believe how awful the whole place seemed. Just run down and sad! Thankfully the factory was lovely!

Go on with you, Oban’s ugly as. Apart from the green seafood shack.

Blackpool and Benidorm which are like twin towns in many ways.

Merthyr Tydfil. We went there a few years ago when the children were young. That's a place where the phrase a PP used " Tattoo to teeth ratio was wrong" could be aptly applied.
The public loos had syringes on the floors; two people were shooting up in the next cubicle...and when we went to fill up with petrol, I watched a mother engage 2 of her children in distraction techniques, while her other two shopliffted.

Kidsgrove in the early 90s. We were on a canal boat holiday, and tied up there to find some food. Bleak, threatening and unnerving. Couldn't leave more quickly.

Dumfries, agree. Again bleak and down trodden.

Agree about Tunisia and Turkey...dreadful sexual harassment at every turn.

Texas? The whole of Texas? The cities, plains, hill country, Guadeloupe river area, Austin music scene? Or was it the general politics?

I lived in Houston, and had some stunning visits to the greater state. But certainly, the right wing, gun toting politics were hard.

My own worst place was Cannes. Fake , dirty, felt unsafe.

I agree it's frustrating and sometimes laughable, but their bad experience of one small part of a country is just as valid as someone else's great experience of one small nice part.

It's useful to know where to avoid, so long as you focus on the town/resort/city and what that poster disliked about it specifically, rather than the country as a whole.

That being said, there are certain countries I have very little interest in seeing because the consistently negative stories I hear about hostile, pushy people, sexually aggressive men and an overarching unpleasantness in the culture are so off-putting that I simply don't care to give the place a chance.

Weston Super Mud. There was a ferris wheel to give you a panoramic view of the mud and the highlight of the one evening we spent there was walking past “Weston’s number one lap dancing club”. I hate to think was number 2 looked like.

Seriously though driving through the towns on the Pakistan side of the Kharakorum highway , dicing with death to get to safety before night and bandits fell , stopping in a town where psychotic foreigners could hire a rocket launcher and blow up a live cow for $200 or go into woods with an AK47 for less money and shoot what I dread to think. Passing opium and cannabis growing openly guarded by armed kids and not a single woman in sight apart from us . Don’t know what was most frightening ….. the road , the locals or the extreme tourists using money to buy extreme “experiences” .

Not at all. Ugly is ... Blackpool, many towns on the Ayrshire coast, Great Yarmouth.

CANNES?!? As in France? Are you kidding? Literally one of the nicest places on Earth. It's where I would love to retire.
