What is the worst place you have ever visited?

I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

Sunderland, with Africa coming a not very close second.

You are right about Hunstanton, but there are some amazing beaches in North Norfolk, don't choose Hunstanton if you're in North Norfolk!

Parthenay in France. The main market square was a concrete wasteland with lots of broken and boarded up windows. It was market day and busy but the atmosphere was really grim. We were planning on viewing a house nearby but changed our minds, the house was lovely and a bargain but Parthenay was probably why.

I think you were unlucky @Dabralor , the Loire Valley is enormous and most of it is gorgeous! Whereabouts were you?

I actually think when people talk about hell this is what it looks and feels like. It's the only time I had to change flights to cut an already short trip shorter because I literally thought I would die if I didn't escape.

I found the people really aggressive, which was unexpected because most people I've known from the Philippines are absolutely lovely. Random guys grabbing my backpack at a port before I can pick it up then screaming at me for payment, buying a ticket for a ferry then having extra money demanded in the middle of the sea. We went to beauty spots only to find that they had been concreted over and I constantly felt a low level of threat. I actually really like Camiguin, and Palawan, but Boracay, Bohol etc were super disappointing.

Also DH couldn't move for women throwing themselves at him, like it got to the point that he wouldn't even go grab some cash or go to the 7/11 without me because it was just so uncomfortable. We were there a month and I actually looked into changing our flights to come home early and I've never, ever done that anywhere else. This was 10 years ago, before we had kids. Maybe we just got unlucky but I've got absolutely zero interest in going back to find out!

The Isle of Wight. Hated it. Found the whole place very strange!

Osaka Japan. I was sexually harassed and bloody terrified.

Eden Project: About 6 years ago. Everything was worn out and tired. Minimal labels. The staff talk for about 3 minutes to customers before they take your cash. Every family members gets a 'welcome'; 12 mins to get a family of 4 inside
I hear there will be a new one in the north.

Thanks @Lavenderandbrown for the reccos re Chicago. It was a stop-over and we hadn't planned on leaving the airport, but I figured Let's Make the Most of It, so we Ubered to a popular pizza resto. A better call would've been the shopping street, or a baseball game and I'll plan ahead for stop-overs next time if time allows venturing from the airport. Cheers 🥂🙂

@38thparallel see my reply above. I've known other people go and really like it. Especially if they just go straight to Palawan or wherever their destination is, but it was the travelling around where I felt like most people we encountered wanted to both rinse us for every possible penny and be aggressive and unfriendly. It's not necessarily rational, I've been robbed in Honduras and would still go back, nothing like that happened in the Philippines but I still wouldn't go back.

Legoland Windsor.

An even worse hellish nightmare for the poor little girl who was being dragged round by her abuser (who was demanding money).

Paris, everyone I met was rude and deliberately unhelpful.
TianJin, was there on NYE 2022 and all the bars closed at 00:30.

No way! It was my daughter's and my favourite place when she was little. We haven't been for quite a few years and my daughter is now 16, but it used to be such a magical place. The Legoland Hotel was also amazing. 🤩

Swanland just outside is lovely for a walk around.
Beverley and Beverley Westwood - get a Burgess Ice Cream if it's still a thing.
Humber Bridge Country Park (Little Switzerland) near the Humber Bridge Car park used to be nice for a walk.
The museums in the museum quarter and the old town is nice. Wilberforce House and Street life museum. Look for The land of Green Ginger
High street has a lot of films/Netflix series filmed there as it looks quite Victorian.
Drive up to Bridlington on a nice day for a walk in the beach and fish and chips.

I agree, I have never felt so unsafe anywhere in my life, I left after one night there it was so awful.
we we were literally stepping over drugged up people on the pavement there. It stunk of weed and piss everywhere.

You did it wrong! DH is Spanish and we love it. We always hire a car and have found nice beaches and great authentic Spanish restaurants.

We love all the Manrique art/roundabout sculptures and properties - the cactus garden is one of my happy places! Timanfaya is fascinating (if touristy), even Rancho Texas (which we assumed would be an awful tourist trap) was actually lovely.

You went to the wrong side of Hull, I wouldn't go to Longhill or Bilton. West of Hull is much nicer

Sorry but the idea that a 3-minute wait while someone welcomes you, and insufficient labels, makes somewhere the worst place you have ever been on the planet is absolutely cracking me up!

I loved LA - my friend and I went there from Las Vegas by rented car and I thought it was brilliant (but only the very centre/touristy parts - the outskirts are horrible).

But then I have actually been to the HELL that is Lagos (Nigeria) so everywhere feels like a safe haven compared to that.
