I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

I need to give some information to clarify Port Merion and Edinburgh.

Clarification, my mother would decide we needed to go out on Mothering Sunday (woe betide we called it Mother's Day) but she would not decide this until about 11.30.

So we would pile in to the car and my Dad would drive us to the place Mum had chosen. We lived in the North West.

When we got to Port Merion it was closed, literally closed for tourists. We did a similar trip to Edinburgh, the city wasn't technically closed but every business was.

I've been to Port Merion since and liked it. Edinburgh I feel I should give a second chance.

Not as bad as some of these other places but I recently went to Crawley. The station looked like it would fall down on my head, everyone glared at me like I’d just landed from outer space and the people in the shops were very rude. It all seems very run down. I was there for a hairdresser and she locks customers in so I presume there’s a lot of crime

Agree with Athens. We went last year and I hated it. Dirty, busy, every second building was derelict, never seen as much graffiti in my life, sketchy people hanging around, aggressive begging on the underground. The museums doesn't make up for it.

Majorca, hated how busy and built up it was and would not ever go back. By contrast loved Menorca which is a lot more laid back.

Stornoway - the rest of Lewis and Harris is just stunning, the Castle is great but the town itself is a total let down.

Other smaller places - Slough, Larkhall, Beith, Wishaw, Airdrie.

Damnloginpopup · 01/08/2026 08:31

Hartlepool.

I'm sure the monkey hanged itself.

Atlanta. It was like Croydon made ten times bigger and with ten times the traffic, heat and humidity.

Los Angeles seemed like Croydon writ large.

PiMCA · 01/08/2026 08:32

The M6 at Birmingham springs to mind. But I might be stretching the meaning of the word visited!

XelaM · 01/08/2026 08:34

Honestly I can't understand many of the places mentioned.

My teen and I LOVED Athens for example. The history, the Acropolis, the beaches, the lovely walks and shops. I honestly can't recognise what people are talking about.

Crawley, Crawley, so good you post it twice 😃

XelaM · 01/08/2026 08:37

Yorkshire, on the other hand, I hate 😡 Horrible people (we had an absolutely horrific experience with a horse purchase there), extremely expensive, terrible weather and just pure misery. Although York itself is a beautiful city.

I wouldn't take what people on this thread say to heart 😂 I mean some people hate Italy, Greece, South of France etc.

This was years ago (dd was in the buggy and she's 19 next week)

I'll never forget some woman screaming 'HES GOT A BAD HEART!' as some rat faced shoplifter was laid, kicking off best he could on the floor with handcuffs on

We where walking past with our jaws swinging

Ah the good old days, now they wouldn't bother coming out even if rat faced shoplifter had stabbed the guard and ran off with the whole contents of boots

It did make me laugh that they put the dummies in plastic boxes with alarms

I must have been the only person in hull that paid with real money for them

Ah, so it was a bygone era then. 😂

It always amazes me when I see these videos of people being arrested, how it takes four police officers to eventually restrain one person who is bucking and writhing, kicking, screaming, spitting and thrashing their head around, going into full panic attack mode completely unnecessarily instead of simply accepting the inevitable and going calmly and quietly. And then their friends and relatives all complain furiously in some social media campaign of indignation that they were unfairly manhandled by police who simply refused to listen when told that they had a bad heart, or a bad back or needed a kidney transplant or whatever. 😂 Just mind blowing.

Idontpostmuch · 01/08/2026 08:40

It depends on criteria. Most boring - Dumfries, unless it's changed. Grottiest - Manchester. Biggest letdown - Malmo.

DrNo007 · 01/08/2026 08:43

Hong Kong. When I went out without DH people were so rude to me, even when I was trying to spend my money with them. And the massive high rises felt claustrophobic - I couldn't see much sky or sun.

It is, it's lovely to walk by the canals and go to the art galleries. The Van Gogh gallery is amazing.

Agreed, I love Amsterdam. We never went anywhere dodgy as we had a 16 year old with us and we had a lovely time.

Crawley is rough! It being the south east is if you fall on hard times, the rent is more than the benefit cap. I’ve worked in the homeless shelter and the amount of people who had it all, then covid hit hard as a lot of people were employed by aviation. Lost jobs, lost homes and no way to survive on benefits not even covering the rent let alone food.

Edited

Good god,you where there!

That's exactly what happened (I'm sure the blonde woman who was screaming did the social media bit)

Yep,the good old days

(I did lay it on a bit thick with the dc,'that's what will happen if your ever caught shoplifting, and dont think ill stand up for you...')

It's so predictable

Hollywood. Once you've seen the Chinese theater and the foot and handprints there's nothing there.

We spent 6 nights in the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, our room looked into the Chinese theatre.

You are correct about Hollywood, it's absolutely filthy and so many sad/mentally ill homeless people.

However I have to say that the Roosevelt was like a little 5 star oasis from the grit outside! I spent my days being served cremant by out of work actors and swimming in the stunning pool.

My children were in heaven. They spent the days eating nachos. And it was very close to Warner Bros tour which was our main reason for going.

But I did try to go for a run one morning and didn't get very far it felt very unsafe.

CherryRipe1 · 01/08/2026 08:48

I see Egypt has been mentioned and yes it can be dreadful, grotty and intimidating. I got the worst case of food poisoning there. In hindsight Ive realised it's a poor country & not to have western expectations upon visiting such places. It's probably the most memorable place I've been for being shocked & intrigued, we did find some of the people there genuinely nice and welcoming with a curiosity about our life in the UK. I also quickly learned to cover up in long black clothes and a headscarf and got far less hassle this way which was challenging in 50° heat.

Croydon

I went there recently, to buy a flute at “just flutes”.. lively experience spending 2 hrs playing beautiful instruments. Bought a Japanese hand made Altus.. then want to the pub on the High St and drank 2 cocktails called “ Cherry Blossom “ .. in honour of my Japanese flute.. I will always have fond memories of Croydon.

I once had to kill an afternoon in Stockton-on-Tees. I felt like I'd lost something the whole time I was there, a sort of despairing and panicky feeling set in.

You'd get a surprise if you went now. Much improved.

Central London for me. Hate the place. It's depressing. I've enjoyed the theatre there but once outside back to hating it. I hope I never have to revisit.

Edinburgh is the opposite. Busy but feeds my soul.

Also like other pps I liked Naples. Some dreadful graffiti but apart from that it felt so real. I didn't like Rome. Florence is pleasant.
