What is the worst place you have ever visited?

I saw a thread on instagram about this and found it really interesting and wanted to hear more. What is the worst place you have visited and why?

So true. I love many of the places being described as horrific, unsafe etc !! E.g. Turkey - one of my favourite places - been many times and love it.

The Charlotte Rampling film - swimming pool was about this but in west Africa

Egypt and Morocco. The men !

The Cold War hadn't ended and it was under Soviet Russian control. I worked with someone who escaped with her parents around that time. It wasn't a tourist destination, fgs. 🤦‍♀️

Leningrad Zoo, 1982. I hope that the Petersburg version is better.

Leningrad had single animals in cages. This included a zebra/donkey cross which - presumably - had been created deliberately in order to keep up with western zoos.

The resulting offspring was confined to a bare iron cage with nothing to keep it occupied. I came out in tears.

She did say-she can imagine it possibly wasn’t then, maybe you misread. I went in 1997 and in all fairness it was pretty ok then - attractive and cheap!

Why were you there in '82?

You missed the two Cathedrals, Hull doesn't even have one? The numerous country parks with stately homes, the historic docks, the Williamson tunnels etc etc, I could go in. If you stay around the Albert Dock, by the Beatles experience and I don't blame you, it's great for rum based cocktails, then you'll be overloaded with the Beatles.

I despise Turkey.

Las Vegas. No desire to ever go back there. Not my scene at all but I do know some people who enjoy going there for the restaurants and shows.

Boston - probably not really the whole city, but a "Tea Party" tour made me feel like the whole city was unwelcoming to Biritsh visitors.

Basically the tour guide got everyone to repeatedly boo me as the only English person on the tour!

Nowadays I'd take it in good humour but I was only 16 at the time and visiting family friends alone!! It was my first time other than school trips away from home and I was also feeling homesick, so didn't really enjoy being "ganged up" on by strangers for shit that people unrelated to me, did a few hundred years ago!!

Pre-Covid I visited 2-3x per year and loved it.

Anyone have anything good to say about Chicago? I had a quick stop-over there and wasn't overly impressed. Deep-dish pizza...underwhelming.

I love Liverpool - we live in Bath and hence can have a nice weekend going nowhere - but make the effort often for Liverpool - love it !! Great vibe and love the people too -

Yep, and full of people who obviously do no research about the place they are going to, and those who expect to be "entertained" all the time.

Honestly, travel is wasted on so many.

Booked a hotel in neasden for my London trip after being assured I would see the "authentic" London. It's a violent grimy dump. Eat like the locals means salmonella chicken and battered dog legs.

Ashington in Northumberland is pretty grim as is the isle of sheppey

@Mumtobabyhavoc chicago USA is a fabulous city to visit. The shopping on Madison Ave the architectural boat tour the dozens of neighborhoods with fabulous architecture flowers and (the despised) holiday decorating…ALL OUT for Halloween and Christmas. I even like lunching at the Restoration Hardware. Portillos
hot dogs/ Wrigley field and the biggest Starbucks. The gorgeous Gold Coast and and Lake Michigan shining. young professionals everywhere and the people are midwestern friendly. Wonderful bars and restaurants.

I think Cleveland/Nashville (mentioned previously) are not cities you visit without knowing someone or knowing a lot about the city. Cleveland has professional sports/museums/ wonderful neighborhoods to explore/ Cedar Point amusement park/ rock and roll hall of fame. Lots of good food in many areas. Nashville has professional sports/museums/ Broadway for music / country music hall of fame/ good shopping and is easy to navigate. Good food in so many areas. If you can’t spend a weekend in Chicago Cleveland or Nashville it’s because you don’t know where to go and no one to show you.

I didn’t get on very well with Hunstanton, I found it miserable, uninviting and the beaches nothing to write home about compared to what we have nearer to home in the Northeast.

Oh that stirred my memory! Backpacking through South America in 2009, we stopped at Huacachina on our way to Nazca and Colca Canyon. We enjoyed the dune buggying from memory - we were probably still half cut on pisco sours - but the 'oasis' itself definitely wasn't much to write home about 😄

There's six core countries in North Africa, the poster has been to half of them, so decided that they wouldn't spend time and money to go to the other three, which share the same culture etc. That isn't baffling. I love North Africa, but it isn't for everyone and parts, like everywhere has run down bits. I haven't seen exceptionally bad animal abuse, but I've had to ignore some things I have seen.

Malta. Flies everywhere and non- descript food. Wanted history and old buildings. Got H&M and the Body Shop

So did you go outside Valletta? Even inside, there are some amazing museums. The Archaeological museum is fantastic. Art museum? Armoury? Malta Experience? Pieta Military Cemetery? Did you go to the Clapham Junction Cart ruts? Simply wonderful. Gozo and Ġgantija? The other wonderful ancient temples, such as Taxien? Superb. Ta' Cenc - gorgeous walk across a Neolithic landscape and wonderful views across to Comino. Take the Fast Ferry, Valletta to Gozo for peanuts. Three Cities-lovely walks. No flies. We've been three times, 7 weeks each time and going again next spring for longer. DH stationed there in the Navy. Granted, food can be ho-hum, but we have our fave places where you can eat brilliantly well for pennies. Or go to supermarkets for great fruit and veg, cheeses, breads. Can't wait for our next trip.
