A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

That sounds interesting. Please post on here if you find it, would be interesting to read.

It doesn't feel like all other options have been exhausted here imv. There are ideas being put forward, such as releasing non violent men currently on remand, focusing on the men jailed for 'white collar' crimes, releasing women and repurposing female prisons etc, but the govt seem to have jumped straight to releasing violent males early. Its not good enough and this isn't a one-off, it will be ongoing.

It was probably on here that someone said the costs to repurpose female prisons (i.e. reinforcement) were prohibitive.

Those weren't my suggestions, just a few things I've seen put forward by others as worthy of consideration.

If these men are so unpredictable that they couldn't be housed in female prisons without significant expensive reinforcements, why are they deemed fit to roam the streets? Just my opinion, but if the cost of reinforcement can't be met, any cell is better than free as a bird, until more prisons can be built.

I think we're in 'choose your hard' territory now. Any ideas need to be weighed up against releasing violent men back into the community.

I'd be all for higher salary ranges for prison officers - it's a bloody dangerous job.

Agree. It should be a highly respected and well paid profession.
It still shocks me that prisoners are allowed to cook in their cells, allowing them to harm prison staff with hot oil and boiling sugar water. Must be horrendous.

Why does Andy Burnham bother saying he will be ‘relentless’ stopping the dinghies crossing the channel?
Why doesn’t he just admit there’s bugger all he can do about it?

the80sweregreat · 10/08/2026 16:27

The government have given the French millions the past few years and it’s not working is it. No wonder people are fed up.

Yes I think it's shocking. Surely they have a relatively good idea which prisoners would be dangerous to staff, and it's not beyond the wit of man to ensure that they have no access to hot oil or sugar water?

Agree. I was thinking the same, should have put an eye roll or angry emoji at the end of my post

Nuthatch26 · 10/08/2026 16:37

Why would the French want to stop them leaving?
Its so depressing. A new record set today - 230 on a single boat. Previous record was 165.

But, but, but…Labour’s record on small boats is a triumph ignored by the fascist Murdoch press! 🙄

The only reason the figures go up and down over time is because the numbers entering southern Europe fluctuate. It has nothing to with this government - or any government we could have - unless we introduce third-country processing.

They aren’t really dinghies any more are they? Turning into superyachts.

He could withdraw the coastguard ships and tell the rnli to stand down.

Nuthatch26 · 10/08/2026 17:25

Ikr. I'm not sure why Labour are boasting about the numbers. Thousands have arrived this year, and more lives lost at sea.
This mega dinghy was apparently buckling in the water due to the weight.
There was a piece on Sky news recently too about migrants coming through the channel tunnel. Sigh.

I don't understand why any of them need a stove. 🤷‍♂️

Times reporting that Probation Officers set to go on strike later this year. Who can blame them when they know whats coming!

I was not impressed with the pictures of that poor baby. Reckless endangerment of a child - they're leaving France, not fleeing some bomb-strafed hellhole where you could understand taking the risk.

We will find out that some Wrong matrix was used or some issue was not forseen.

The best brains in the UK should be looking at this from every angle.

And where was the mum ??

LieborCookin · 10/08/2026 18:17

I don't know about anyone else but id like some update as to why that boat was allowed to set sail ? Had the French not got on duty yet ?

Tbh if I were French I'd want to wave off as many as possible too. I have no idea what we're paying them for though.

Reportedly, it was too dangerous to stop it leaving - which begs the question "too dangerous" for who?

Nuthatch26 · 10/08/2026 18:33

I thought the French were paid whether they intervened or not? Happy to be corrected if that's no longer the case.
AFAIK, there is zero incentive for the French to stop them.

Too dangerous for who - indeed.

And I heard on the news it called round various beaches picking groups of migrants up, don’t think it was in any particular hurry.
