Investors dumped US bonds in a fresh wave of selling on Thursday, as a major intervention by Donald Trump failed to calm fears regarding America’s spiralling debt.

Yields on 30-year US treasuries rose to 5.26pc in early trading, reversing the drop in borrowing costs after the White House said it would pump billions of dollars into the bond market.

Rising oil prices and renewed inflation fears also pushed yields on benchmark 10-year treasuries higher, which fed into inflated borrowing costs around the world.

This includes in the UK, where yields on 30-year debt climbed to 5.82pc, approaching levels not seen since 1998.

The sell-off came after Wall Street warned Donald Trump that he risks losing credibility with investors after his intervention in the bond market failed to allay fears regarding America’s yawning deficit.

Analysts at JP Morgan said borrowing costs would keep rising unless the US president takes concrete steps to reduce the US’s debt pile, which crossed $40tn (£29.3tn) overnight.
Economists warned that the only way Mr Trump could sustain lower borrowing costs was to cut government spending or accept a weaker dollar.
Thursday’s increase almost reverses the drop in borrowing costs after the Trump administration launched a major intervention to calm investors.

However, a string of analysts warned that the intervention would backfire because investors were losing faith in Mr Trump’s ability to reduce debt.
Jay Barry, a managing director at JP Morgan, said: “Absent real fiscal consolidation, we fear the markets will view this action as lacking credibility.”
He added that this could also shake investor confidence in what is still deemed the world’s safest asset.

“This could contribute to higher term premiums and yields over time should treasury become more opportunistic in its approach to debt management and move further away from its ‘regular and predictable’ tenet.”
At a press conference on Wednesday night, Mr Trump insisted the public should not worry about increasingly volatile bond markets.
Asked whether Americans should be worried, Mr Trump said: “No, I don’t think so. Our country is doing so well despite interest rates.”

He reiterated his belief that US interest rates had remained “artificially high” after policymakers at the Federal Reserve voted to hold rates last month.
However, analysts warned that a weaker dollar was all but inevitable if the administration were unwilling to bring down the US’s $40tn debt, which could fuel a fresh wave of inflation before the midterm elections.

Kit Juckes at Société Générale noted that the US debt pile was already much larger than annual output.

“This will be a growing issue, which will either force the US to tighten fiscal policy, accept higher borrowing costs, or let the dollar weaken,” he said.
Analysts at Jefferies said families would be hit by higher long-term borrowing costs in a move that could cost the Republican Party votes.

Mohit Kumar, of Jefferies, said mortgage rates were tied to yields on long-dated US debt, warning that the “Trump administration cannot afford much higher yields going into the long end”.

It comes as figures suggest the US’s debt interest bill is on course to hit $1tn this month amid surging borrowing costs for the world’s largest economy.
US debt interest stood at $931bn at the end of July, according to US treasury data, with $104bn added to the bill in July alone.

The surge in US debt has been driven in part by billions of dollars in lost income after the US supreme court ruled that a large share of his tariffs were illegal.
Meanwhile, Mr Kumar added that the Trump administration could be tempted by policies that would push pension funds to buy US debt, similar to what was seen in Britain in the early 2000s, when funds shifted from shares into gilts.

The US government is now as risky an investment as AI

What happened to the beautiful bond market Mango was waxing about recently?

logicisall · 20/08/2026 20:53

After having lived through the time when £1=$1 and knowing that countries operate on debt, I'm less concerned about US debt under Trump. Because I don't live there and instead see money making investment opportunities. Sorry!

ICE news.

A former spy who infiltrated al-Qaeda and Isis for the CIA has been detained by ICE and is now facing deportation, The Times can reveal.
Blerim Skoro, 55, a Kosovan refugee, played a crucial role in intercepting terror plots in the wake of the September 11 attacks. He worked for America for almost a decade, risking his life to infiltrate al-Qaeda camps in Pakistan during the hunt for Osama bin Laden.

A prized informant of the American intelligence services whose work took him to some of the most dangerous parts of the Middle East, he passed on vital information that prevented al-Qaeda from supplying weapons to jihadists.
After ending his career as an informant in 2010, Skoro claims the intelligence services promised him US residency. Yet on August 3 this year he was detained by officers from Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) while attending a routine biometrics appointment in New Jersey to renew his work permit.

The father of three, who works as a taxi driver, was granted leave to remain in 2022 under the United Nations Convention against Torture. Skoro successfully argued that, if he was to be deported to Kosovo, his life would be in danger as a result of his undercover work with jihadist groups.

“I worked for the CIA and did all these things for this nation and now I’m here,” Skoro told The Times from the ICE detention facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey. “I went to the office for my scheduled appointment, I handed them my work permit and driver’s licence and suddenly they were handcuffing me. It makes no sense.
...
Skoro said he was travelling to a CIA safe house in Macedonia in 2010 when he was ambushed and shot. Instead of being flown to the US for his safety, he was given a cash payment in an envelope and told to cross back into Kosovo.

Skoro decided he had had enough of waiting for the CIA to help him acquire a green card and travelled on his own to Canada. From Canada, he smuggled himself across the border into the US in 2015 to join his family.
He was arrested by immigration agents after using his daughter’s Metro card on the subway. He spent six months in federal detention before he was released in 2016.

After a six-year legal fight in the immigration courts, Skoro was granted leave to remain in 2022 under the UN convention after stating he would be tortured, or possibly even killed, if he was to be sent back home because of his time undercover.

The details of Mel's wardrobe are the least depressing thing in HDR's account. Honestly, there are times when you see it all written down in one place and the hopelessness is overwhelming. However, I then find it's immediately replaced with white hot rage - neither great for my BP or state of mind.

73 days to midterm elections.
Drumpf will still be President but maybe a switch in one (or both!) houses can push the pathetic, arse-licking Repug rats to jump off the Friend of Epstein's ship to try to save their sorry skins?

I want to say ‘not enough’ - it could never, ever be ‘enough’!

But it is Melania and I reckon she took this orange thing on as a job so I imagine she finds the pay cheque ok. It’s clear too her employment package has improved year on year as she has to spend less and less time with him.

ETA no judgement on doing this type of thing as ‘work’ at all

I think one has been writing on the subject longer than the other. Also, I think one has a double-barrelled name and the other not. Also, one is married to a Maine lobsterman and the other - not.

Reminds me of George Cottrell and refering to Farage as 'Daddy'.

Cottrell was imprisoned in the US because of wire fraud in a sting operation by the FBI.

Trump said on Friday he would allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported without impacting tariff quotas as part of a 90-day deal aimed at lowering prices as U.S. consumers struggle with grocery bills.

Trump, in a social media post, said he had "a commitment" that the meat would be sold at 25% below current market prices. He did not say which countries the beef was coming from or who had committed to the lower prices.

"This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again," Trump said.

Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment for more details on the agreement.

Good. I have been worrying about those poor sods. (Comes of having a son who was in the Navy, I suppose; if that had been done to him, I'd have been demonstrating in the streets.)
