The US drilling will be the thin end of the wedge. I hope it is blocked but I know that many locals will see it as their opportunity/payday away from Danish gov't control.

If they do then they are mad. Who wants to be taken over by Trump?
The idea of the USA drilling in Greenland makes my blood boil.

Just saw my typo in earlier post ... strong not string! 🙄

Agree that Greenland needs to be the ones who have the final say, but the US's unquestioned entitlement and avarice is sickening.

Just keep your big fat noses out.

Documents published on US embassy’s website prompt claims of attempt to export Maga propaganda to UK.

...Using language that the pro-Trump Maga movement has sought to appropriate, a funding notice identifies a goal of fostering a “national conversation” about “shared civilizational values” underpinning US-UK ties. Priority will go to applicants aiming to celebrate “freedom of speech” and “limited government”.
It comes after senior Trump officials voiced sharp criticism of British authorities and repeated misinformation on a range of fronts including abortion and digital regulation, and allied with European far-right movements in attacks on hate speech and immigration policies.

The grants appear to be separate from other grants of $12m which the US state department is planning to allocate to organisations in the UK founded by the prominent Conservatives Jacob Rees-Mogg and Toby Young.
Those intended grants, revealed in US government documents leaked to the Guardian, are part of a package of support for European groups viewed favourably by the Trump administration.
However, the US government has now been accused of “meddling in British democracy” after documents published on the US embassy’s website invited charities, non-profit organisations and others to apply for grants under a scheme labelled “Liberty Under Law: The Shared Anglo-American Tradition”...

...Responding to Smart’s allegation of “meddling”, they added: “The Embassy is mindful of such concerns, and has discontinued Biden-era public diplomacy spending on divisive ideological projects such as ‘climate justice,’ LGBTQ activism, and race-based hiring initiatives – none of which, to our recollection, raised such complaints from officials.”
Eyebrows have also been raised by veteran former state department officials at some language used in a second grant opportunity being offered by the US embassy’s website under its Public Diplomacy Section program, an annual grant scheme.
Applications, including those intending to run “Educational and public awareness initiatives”, are invited to submit proposals for goals including strengthening US prosperity and UK economic resilience, securing UK support for US policy including “ensuring support for Israel’s right to defend itself” and countering competition from China.
A former state department official said: “In the past the language for this stuff would be more like ‘increase understanding of US policy’. This is very openly saying more ‘persuade people to agree with US policy’.”
“Increasing support for Israel in a third country is weird. Can’t say if it’s ever been done, but it’s weird.”

This is where it gets odd I think. I was reading a while back about a company wanting to set up an aluminum smelter in Greenland. It has been going of for decades, and the locals are split. And fair enough. Free market economy, and so long as environmental rules are kept in place.

But Trump is on about US nationalized, or "US Government invested in" companies, and that totally changes it. Because that is going the direction of The East India. or Hudson Bay company direction. And it has a big chunk of socialism thrown in.

And if Trump is on about national security, well then, he should set up a US Government owned company to mine rare earths in the US. The US have plenty. And if it is not economically viable for private companies to mine them because of cost, the feds should suck it up and pay the cost. Instead of mineral raping other countries.

Thank God we managed to save all that money formerly wasted on keeping ebola from spreading and mutating and children from starving and dying of AIDS and other preventable causes. If we hadn't, we would be able to afford to spread those values.

Thanks. You're right, yours is biglier 😂 We come here every year and basically can't leave the motel room without a mask since I arrived yesterday. The air quality is ranging from very unhealthy to hazardous. It is awful. There's ash falling. Puts a full stop to sitting/swimming at the beach but we're making the best of it with marathon thrifting & daylong canning, haha.

Been there, done that. I lived in Sierra foothills wildfire country for 30 years and remember the days of 'just stay inside!' due to surrounding fires. And panicking whenever we heard a siren close by or a plane overhead. I'm a 'flatlander' now and so far what's burning a bit south-east of us hasn't blown smoke this way. Yet.

Our 'most unique' smoke story was when we left for Yellowstone during the Yosemite 'Rim Fire'. We didn't get clear of the smoke until we were just west of Elko Nevada! That was about a 400 mile, 7 hr drive in a NE-erly direction.

How do you can in a motel room? I've never canned, but have seen a friend with boiling kettles, simmering saucepans, and mounds of peach and plum peelings.

On a lighter note, I mentioned the US drilling in Greenland to my ME contact group and this suggestion came back.
We oust the Americans and take over the project with all cats in charge of catering (hunting polar bears).

Idea strangled at birth because:
Lazy cats will get promoted to overlord, and we'll end up cleaning their poop and hand feeding them baby seal.😂

I saw reports of this Jake Sherman interview with Trump yesterday, but couldn’t find a clip of my favourite part of the interview. (He said, “Well, a lot of people are saying I’m one of the greatest presidents ever.” Sherman quickly added, “They’re not saying that, though.” And Trump muttered, “But they know,” and “They see the results.”) Here it is mentioned again today, though I still haven’t found the clip as I couldn’t face listening to the whole rambling thing.

“If Democrats do take over the House, it’s just going to be investigation mania,” Sherman said. “They’re going to do oversight. They could impeach you again. Do you think they will?”

Well, a lot of people are saying I’m one of the greatest presidents ever,” Trump said.

“They’re not saying that, though,” Sherman quipped.

Yeah, but they know,” Trump answered. “They see the results.”

"Look, we have right now more money being invested in the United States than at any time in history. More money than any country has ever had being invest — we’re at numbers that nobody — we’re building more factories, plants, and none of them — I was just talking about AI, AI, yes — but, auto plants. Plants of all kinds. Toyota just announced they’re coming in with the largest plant anywhere in the world, they’re leaving Mexico. They’re leaving Canada. People are leaving — the car companies are leaving Germany, they’re leaving Japan, they’re all coming here because of tariffs. Because of my very smart use of tariffs."

“But will they impeach you do you think?” Sherman tried again.

It’s hard to believe they could,” Trump said, and Sherman followed up with, “They’ll be all over you. They’ll be subpoena —”

“It’s a very unfair thing. Yeah, it’s a very unfair thing,” Trump said. “You know, when I was president, and I made the statement a lot about Hillary Clinton. They wanted to impeach her, they wanted to destroy her, and I said, ‘You just can’t do that.’ And then I get in there and they tried to do the same thing with me. They were vicious.”

“Are they more vicious than Republicans?” Sherman asked.

“I think Republicans are too nice, actually,” Trump said. “I think the Republicans are much nicer. I think the Republicans are much more gentle than the Democrats.

"Trump Says He Wants Supreme Court to Revive Suit Against Hillary Clinton
Greg Stohr and Erik Larson, Bloomberg
President Donald Trump has signaled that “he will ask the US Supreme Court to revive his failed lawsuit accusing Hillary Clinton, the Democratic National Committee and others of conspiring to tarnish his 2016 campaign with bogus claims of collusion with Russia,” according to Bloomberg. “In a Supreme Court filing made public Tuesday, the president requested an additional month, until Sept. 9, to seek review of a November appeals court decision that upheld dismissal of the case and affirmed almost $1 million in sanctions against Trump and one of his lawyers.” “The 3-0 ruling by [the] 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals faulted Trump and lawyer Alina Habba for filing a ‘frivolous’ lawsuit against his 2016 rival. Two of the judges on the panel were appointed by Republican presidents, including one by Trump.” In his recent filing with the Supreme Court, the president “indicated his appeal would focus on the appeals court’s conclusion that he waited too long to sue.”

He is still chasing her. Not emails now. Russia.

  • “I think she should be in jail for what she did with her emails.” — June 2016 rally in Redding, California,
  • Clinton said that “it’s just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country.” Trump replied: “Because you’d be in jail.” — October 2016 debate.
  • “She deleted the emails. She has to go to jail.” — October 2016 rally in Lakeland, Florida.
  • After Trump mentioned “Crooked Hillary,” the crowd chanted repeatedly, “Lock her up!” Trump replied: “For what she’s done, they should lock her up, she’s disgraceful.” — October 2016 rally in Greensboro, North Carolina.
  • “Hillary Clinton should have been prosecuted and should be in jail. Instead she is running for president in what looks like a rigged election.” — October 2016 tweet.
  • “Crooked Hillary, wait, Crooked … you should lock her up, I’ll tell you.” — January 2020 Toledo, Ohio, rally
  • When the crowd chanted, “Lock her up” Trump said, “I agree.” — September 2020 Pennsylvania rally

How do you can in a motel room? I've never canned, but have seen a friend with boiling kettles, simmering saucepans, and mounds of peach and plum peelings.

We have had several evac alert warnings on our cells today - not for our area but where we were yesterday. Very, very fast moving fire that started 530pm yesterday. I'm now worried that we'll have difficulty making it home as there's just one route left open and there are contained fires close to it.

Funny that you mention Elko. My dad had an apartment there when he was doing exploration work in Nevada but rarely hear anyone mention it.

Re canning - we have a full kitchen and bring all the supplies for boiling water canning except the produce, which we buy here. I'm currently debating going outside into the hazardous fire air to escape the brine fumes 😂We still can at home but the majority of the pickling and half the jam/sauces get done up here. My DH needs to be occupied on vacation or he goes stir crazy.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/08/2026 01:11

@Justsaynonow

Oh wow! An 'Elko' connection lol. Not a whole lot there but it has a few nice RV parks. We usually either stopped there or in Wells (50 mi east) when we headed to YNP or points east.

Thank God for fire and weather apps! We used them for fire (home and travel) and for tornadoes (travel).

Scary to think there's only one route home. That's something I always worried about when we were in more rural or isolated areas. Hopefully the fires stay contained and you can get through safely. The only time we had to stay put for a fire was in Southern California when 'The Grapevine' was closed due to a fire. Stayed the night at an RV park and the road was open the next day. "Have caravan, will travel (or pull over for the night)" lol.

Smoke or brine fumes. That's some choice! lol
