Baggy Trousers.

...Actually, I think I'd just turned 17 when it was released, but it remains the background sound in all my memories of the upper sixth common room at my secondary school - something so wistfully melancholic intertwined with that early-autumn, new-school-year feeling that fades before the end of September.

Seasons in the Sun, Terry Jacks, 1974. Oh, how I hated that fucking record. There was no escaping it that year - I swear I would have done better in my ‘O’ levels if I hadn’t had to hear that vapid pap whining drearily out from every radio in West Yorkshire, every fucking hour of every bastard day…

Okay, I’m only half-serious. I did grow to dislike it intensely, though. A dislike only surpassed by Bohemian Fucking Rhapsody the following year, but that’s another story.

MeAndMyGhost · 25/07/2026 13:38

I'll be missing you.

Highlighted when Princess Diana died.

I don't particularly want the whole of the internet to be able to calculate my year of birth.

Suffice to say that there were a lot of memorable chart hits when I was 16, many of which even today's youngsters would know well.

Seeline · 25/07/2026 13:44

Not sure I can narrow it down to 1!
Careless whisper
Like a virgin
Relax
Do they know it's Christmas
And the classic... Agadoo 😁

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/07/2026 13:45

Lets Just say that it was the height of the New Romantics.

HappiestSleeping · 25/07/2026 13:46

I am struggling to remember being 16 🤦‍♂️

KrazyKatty · 25/07/2026 13:46

Teenage Kicks by The Undertones. My 17yr old DS plays the bloody song in his band set. 😂

ginasevern · 25/07/2026 13:54

Life on Mars - Bowie
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
Merry Christmas Everyone - Slade
Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack
Can the Can - Suzie Quatro

There are loads more, it was a pretty good year for music.

Whosthetabbynow · 25/07/2026 13:58

September- Earth Wind and Fire
Mighty Real-Sylvester

mathanxiety · 25/07/2026 14:04

Around the time I was 16 there was a huge variety of music, so my list is eclectic.
Abba - The Winner Takes it All
Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry
Randy Crawford - Someday I'll Fly Away
Roxy Music - On the Radio
The Nolans (!) - In the Mood for Dancing

Loads by Bob Marley, The Specials, Roxy Music, Blondie, The Detroit Spinners...

justasking111 · 25/07/2026 14:12

Great songs and I remember them well. I drove my mother mad playing Bobby Davro Honey and The very first time one summer as well 🤣

I think James Blunt was around that age. It's not a song of that time but I have a very vivid memory of listening to ABBA Dancing Queen and thinking "'only' 17?! I'm 17 and that doesn't seem very young to me" 😂😂

Musicaltheatremum · 25/07/2026 14:16

I will survive by Gloria Gaynor. I was in my O' level year and we used to celebrate end of exams singing it.

Thebinisrightthere · 25/07/2026 14:27

I remember Sinead O'Connor Nothing Compares 2 U being particularly relevant to me as I'd just had my heart broken for the first time aged 16

I doubt the “whole of the internet” will be sufficiently bothered to calculate your (presumably outing?) year of birth. 🙄

Mollymoo67 · 25/07/2026 14:45

Perfect Skin by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. That song used to haunt me as I had terrible acne at the time. 😬

Catarinabella · 25/07/2026 14:49

I wish I was 16 and know what I know now

PetulaGordeno · 25/07/2026 14:49

Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves - just finished my O levels, in love, new Saturday job, planning my summer holiday.
Anything Live Aid related as that was a few weeks after my actual birthday.
I still have a mix tape I made for that holiday - Go West, Paul Hardcastle, Madonna, Jermaine Jackson, Debarge, Propganda.
I could not bear Frankie by Sister Sledge. It was on all summer.

SeasideDaisy · 25/07/2026 14:56

Killing me softly, The Fugees

Say you’ll be there, The spice girls
Wonderwall, Oasis
