What remakes of films do you genuinely prefer over the original?

Mine is Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle.

Not technically a remake I guess since it’s a sequel long after the first one, but I really do find it brilliant.

Watching Jack Black be a 16 year old girl is brilliant

Cruel Intentions. Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar are brilliant in that film.

Totally disagree with West Side Story. The original is perfection.

Definitely Thomas Crown Affair, the only good thing about the original was Steve McQueen.

Hard agree with Thomas Crowne, Dune, Bodysnatchers, The Fly and The Thing (as in the John Carpenter version is way better than the b&w one, I'm not counting the 2011 one).

But hard disagree with Total Recall. The Arnie one is so much fun and the remake was so bland and grey. Same problem with the Robocop remake. Take away Verhoeven's vision and it's all soulless.

His Girl Friday is the best out of the earlier and later The Front Pages. Out of all the Star is Borns, I actually like the Gaga one a lot. Not sure it's my fave but it's a very good remake.

I prefered the re-make - with the cat being part of the gang and causing villain's fatal slip downstairs when owner was threatened- rather than the bird.

First Lady killer has a stella cast but not at their best somehow.

But I realise apart from DH I may be alone in this view

Total Recall first film with Arnold Schwarzenegger is hands down better than remake.

Oh nonononoo!!! That series was so utterly pointless and dreary! All in black and white, there was no real motive for the murder, there was no beauty or glamour to the characters. In general, I would say that Andrew Scott is a better actor than Matt Damon (who was the weakest part of the original film, imo) but the film is still amazing. The series was most definitely inferior.

Well musicals are always so true to life. I mean who doesn't go tripping over the Alps singing with a gang of kids dressed in curtains.

I do it every time I escape from my nunnery to get another governess job with a hot dad. My multi-octave yodelling and fun dressmaking inveigles the hottie away from his svelte Baroness every time, I tell you.

Night of The Living Dead. The zombies are so good. I like realistic looking reanimated corpses in my zombie horror.

Aah can't agree with this one. The first is such a cultural moment and so original. The moment when those first figures start moving towards them in the graveyard is chilling. Imagine never having seen that before. It's so seminal I don't think it can be beaten even with better tech. Plus there's such a glut of zombie stuff now that even the best ones struggle to bring anything new, while that first one still has its power. The whole trilogy is great but hard to beat NotLD. His debut feature too!

I do agree with you actually on it being something wholly original and terrifying! The first scene especially. Such a beautiful build of tension. And I love it, but the zombies in the remake swing it for me! (Yes, I'm weird.) Tom Savini is a horror makeup genius.

I would have loved to have seen the original in the cinema the first time around.

Lord of the Flies. Prefer the 1990 remake to the 1960s version.

Both are great, with that said, and we watched both extensively for English GCSE.
