Do you give tradespeople your Wi-Fi password while they are working?

Do you offer tradies your wifi password? We did this last night for an electrician we've been using for years and a painter we've known for years too. I'm not sure I would for a random that I've not used before who was only round the once...but the painter wanted to listen to the Rest is Politics podcast and couldn't get data...

Wouldn't bother me at all

Jk987 · 23/07/2026 15:37

I wouldn’t mind doing so. Can always change the password if worried about security.

MPforTitipu · 23/07/2026 15:39

Just give them a QR code to scan and they can connect without knowing the password.

shoesandshipsandsealingwax · 23/07/2026 15:46

Of course. Wouldn't occur to me not to.

Backedoffhackedoff · 23/07/2026 15:47

I’ve never been asked for it but yes I would

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 23/07/2026 15:47

I’ve never been asked but for something like this yes I would

OwlCalledSage · 23/07/2026 15:49

Yes, I’m not sure why anyone wouldn’t.

Abra1t · 23/07/2026 15:50

I've never been asked.

It wouldn't occur to me to give anyone the wifi password unless they live here or are staying and they asked for it. Don't understand why they'd need it. Podcasts all download while you're at home anyway.

Well, we live somewhere where mobile signal is patchy so anyone needing to access the internet needs WiFi.

I suppose they just want to conserve data

TheSmallAssassin · 23/07/2026 15:53

We've got a separate guest network, so would give them access to that.

scorchedgreenery · 23/07/2026 15:53

Only the guest network. And wouldn’t give them password for that either, I’ll share wirelessly.

MinnieGirl · 23/07/2026 15:53

No I wouldn’t. Surely they can use their mobile phone data? And as someone who had a neighbour access our WiFi and downloaded extreme porn images, I am very very protective of my wifi…

Dontgetstuckinthepast · 23/07/2026 15:53

Nope. Don't know what they're up to on line.

We don't all live in areas with good mobile signal.

JellyBellies · 23/07/2026 15:56

No i would not. I dont want random connecting to our WiFi network as its not safe.

If their device is infected with any viruses, ransomeware this can spread to your devices once they are on the same wifi network.

They could hack into the router, especially if you have not changed the default password.

Our router has a separate guest wifi network and that what I would share if asked.

Doesn’t your WiFi provider block that as standard?!

WorkCleanRepeat · 23/07/2026 15:59

Yes i would. Nobody has ever asked for it though.

Maddy70 · 23/07/2026 15:59

Why wouldn't you?

7238SM · 23/07/2026 16:03

We've recently completed major renovations and likely had 30 different tradespeople here over the 2yrs. Not one asked for the WIFI code, but then we aren't rural. I personally wouldn't be offering up as a routine thing.

starlightbright18 · 23/07/2026 16:09

No

How did they manage to do that?

cbbo · 23/07/2026 16:15

If they ask, yes of course. But I wouldn’t think to offer it

BauhausOfEliott · 23/07/2026 16:16

I’ve never been asked for it, but I’d certainly give it to them if they asked for it.
