New manager told role is now a job share after 10 days

I'm 10 days into a new role as a manager in a new start up.

Today the owner informed me that my role was now a job share with a person that has no management experience and very little experience in what the start up specialises in.

It caught me by surprise and I'm really disappointed.

I've been pulling 12-14 hour days for the past 10 days to get them up and running and now I'm thinking why on earth did I bother?

I don't know if I should make it work or if I should just jump ship now.

There were no issues with my skills or performance.

Owners decided they wanted this person on the team and the only way they would join was in a senior role.

So now they have my job.

I just don't know what to make of it all.

Get out now. There will be a shit load more the owner will do in the future that will be unprofessional and piss you off. Do you have a contract? Can they legally change it to a job share?

Does that mean you are now part time?

Get paid, get out now. Fuck 'em.

That sounds horrendous and not at all professional. I would be looking for an early exit. Stop doing the extra hours and certainly do not train or support your job sharer. If they don't have the skills then tough

Is your job share friend/relative of owner by any chance.

As others have said, have they just made you part time?!. If you can afford to walk, I'd be outta there tomorrow. You'll end up babysitting this other person they have bought in. How shit !

I have not signed a contract yet. They've been slow with that. Kicking myself now.

To be honest, they appear to have just been winging it until I got on board.

I'd not react until I saw how it works in practice. They should have been upfront with you, maybe they are finding their feet. If they appoint someone inexperienced cos of a perceived need, maybe they'll go to great lengths to keep you once you prove what you can offer!

They’re waiting for you to rescue their ship on a part time wage while they pay friends and family for zero work or experience.

I guarantee they've used you for your knowledge, skills and experience. They now expect you to leave.

I asked for an outline on how they expect the share to work and how my role will change and we're going to discuss it in the morning.

I was literally in the middle of an interview, in a day full of interviews, while also bringing new team members up to speed.

It was a horrid surprise delivered in the middle of an intense day.

I had my role outlined but they are quite disorganised (which is why I've been pulling long hours) and they have not sent my contract.

But yes, not a mistake I will make again.

Talk to ACAS asap. You'll probably be better off leaving, but it might be handy for future employees for ACAS to know there were long standing problems.

Under no circs share any professional contacts, have any ideas, or solve any problems.

You need to reduce your knowledge of their business needs to loo roll supplies.

Their business won’t work if they carry on behaving like this anyway, so you’re not missing much.

If she's got no contract, would she get sick pay? I would be concerned about this-some jobs don't pay it and she has nothing in writing.

You need more information before you do anything here - you need to establish exactly what they mean when they say job share. Don't jump into anything, get your facts straight first, and then make an informed decision.

It dues y really matter how the job share might work, their behaviour is unprofessional and a huge red flag.

get out with your dignity and credibility is the best you can hope for at this point. Be prepared to walk away tomorrow morning after they “discuss” this with you.
