My son has been offered social housing.i can help him with sone things. But not larger items.

I'm hoping i can find a charity of some sort that sells 2nd hand furniture. As we could probably get most things he needs under one roof and its likely they will deliver.

Just to ad British heart foundation and simlar are to expensive. We can't use free cycle . Facebook anything that requires collection . We do not drive or have access to a car. So it makes sense to use a charity

So bit of a long shot but does anyone know of charity's that sell 2nd hand furniture in the southeast london area..

Thanks 😊

I think many recycling centres have some sort of sale area. Googling gives

Southwark: Visit the Southwark Household Reuse and Recycling Centre at 43 Devon St, SE15 1AL. Unwanted items in good condition are donated to local social enterprises for resale.

Greenwich: The Greenwich Reuse And Recycling Centre is located at Nathan Way, SE28 0AF.

Bexley: The Thames Road Waste Transfer Station at Crayford, DA1 5QJ, operates an on-site Community Reuse Shop.

Oh wow Nathan way was where I got all my furniture 30 years ago. It looks very different now though I'm not sure if it still does the same thing. It used to be a massive wear house. I can't recall there being a tip/recyle there. It could be i just don't remember ir it could have been added in the massive 30 years. I will look properly in a bit.

How can a home come with no carpet? That’s outrageous. Yes, I know councils are doing tough, as are most, but you’d think a home should come with the basics in place.

Your best bet would be to post on your local Facebook page explaining your situation. People are often incredibly kind and generous.

The majority of social housing comes without carpet. Whilst some HAs are starting to try and change this by deep clean and offering to next tenant, the standard long term policy has always been to rip out old flooring (causing a lot of waste in the past, but adopted as a standard due to possible infestation or other issues) or, if new build, there is no carpet only safety flooring in kitchens and bathrooms.
Edited to add: as a SH tenant myself, I don't agree that no carpet is 'outrageous' - in most cases SH provides a very secure home and no one can expect everything to be handed to them.

Why can't you use free cycle? Usually some great stuff on there :)

It says why in my op.

Although people have suggested I make a wanted post. Mention that we would need larger items delivered and that we can pay for that. That way its known from the start and it won't feel so rude.

I post stuff for free on olio, local whatsapp groups and facebook. I wouldn’t be offended at all if you explained politely that you were helping your son, would I consider local delivery or holding the item until you can hire a van to collect multiple things.

Loan sharks such as payday loan companies sadly don't care about passing affordability/credit checks. They deliberately target poor people. He shouldn't borrow for furniture because it will only make things worse for him, but if he does, he should get an account with his local credit union e.g. in Woolwich https://www.gbcreditunion.com/

If he wants carpet he could contact carpet shops to ask for cheap offcuts, and do 1 room at a time. However I'd look for laminate flooring rather than carpet, much easier and cheaper to keep clean. Carpet gets filthy and will likely need to be replaced in 10 years.

It's really not outrageous to have no carpet. When we moved into our house thirty years ago we had bare boards for a year until we could afford to carpet xx

oliil4l · 23/07/2026 11:03

If he's just starting out, it might also be worth asking the housing association or the council if they have a furniture reuse scheme or can point him towards one. Some local charities work with people moving into social housing and can provide basic furniture at much lower prices than the bigger charity shops. Hopefully someone local can recommend a specific place, but it's definitely worth asking his housing officer as they often know what's available in the area.

Social housing has always been no flooring all the walls stripped. Definitely for my council anyway although some of the new builds have flooring and white walls. But not the old builds. Its just how it is.
If he can get laminated all good. But I think he just needs to get what ever he can on the floor for now. He has mentioned vynal/lino which may be an idea.

Perhaps have a look at a small independent flooring retailer, the sort that will probably be set up in an old mill or church somewhere, to see if they have roll ends/off cuts, especially if the rooms are small. They usually subcontract fitting to a local self employed fitter and sometimes offer weekly payments although I don't know if the terms are favourable. But buying flooring this way will probably be cheaper than going to a big name on a retail park.

Bjorkdidit · 23/07/2026 11:40

It's also worth saying that we have mostly lino in our house. It's from the days when we used to foster rescue cats and kittens so the less said about the state of the carpets we got rid of, the better. Ours is a mid range, slightly textured wood pattern, but it was relatively low cost and looks and feels nice.

A while ago a young woman in a similar position to your son put a post on facebook ( think towns page news and views type) and asked the wider community for help, she explained she had no transportation, end result people generously donated everything from cutlery to white goods , curtains furniture , pans etc and as it was the local group they all delivered to her as well

I think this is the aim of the game.

i live in social housing. You get a floor laid in the kitchen and bathroom because ‘law’. Other than that you’re on your own. But. Your rent is so much cheaper so don’t take the piss.

Llttledrummergirl · 23/07/2026 12:14

When my dnan was given her council house, back when they were being built on mass 1950s/1960s, the kitchen had a sink.

They were all so happy just to have running water in the house.

Bare floorboards are fine for a while. Maybe they/you can make rag rugs to put down.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 23/07/2026 12:19

We slept on a bed in the living room while my uncle painted the rest of the house.it was fun.

The kitchen in that place was massive; as was the garden.

anyolddinosaur · 23/07/2026 12:33

Unfortunately you cant walk into the Greenwich site so they may not resell anything there, just checked it - sorry.

One of my friends once had her living room recarpeted with a perfectly fine carpet a house 2 doors down threw out as they didnt like it. As they were identical houses it fitted fine. Not unusual IME for people to have offcuts in their attic they will donate to a good cause and while they may not fit you might get one that could be cut to size.

Do the ad on Facebook.
A nice post, just saying
Dear Neighbours,
My son is moving into his new flat, unfortunately he is in a difficult situation where he has nothing and I mean nothing. If anyone has anything they are getting rid of please let us know. It needs to be local as we don't drive, we would be grateful for any help and especially if someone in the community can help with local delivery - we can't do payment but we can pay for petrol and do a cup of tea and a slice of cake: Thank you for reading. This is what we are looking for:

Best of luck!

MellersSmellers · 23/07/2026 13:17

Have you checked whether the Council has something? Both Richmond and Hounslow have "Furniture Project" warehouses that will collect/deliver decent quality secondhand furniture.
I give away a lot on Freecycle and have/would deliver local to me if the person sounded in need and said they didn't have a car, so trust in the kindness of strangers!

Have a look for a "Random Acts of Kindness" group on FB for your area, people advertise things they want to give away or you can ask for things you need (need to be specific) good luck to him x

Itsalittlebitwarm · 23/07/2026 20:18

On marketplace try to find somewhere as near as possible then carry items one at a time with help/a trolley/hire a delivery driver for one day to pick up them all up.

As you know, charity shops will deliver large items for a small fee as well. Xx

Stopsnowing · 23/07/2026 20:26

I have pm you with details of someone giving away the contents of an entire house.

Supersimkin7 · 23/07/2026 21:26

Recycling hubs in posh areas are a hayuuuge source of more than good household stuff. Wandsworth tip is legendary, because the council save and clean anything expensive that works. They give it away.

Neighbour free for collection ads
Check for charities in the area who may be able to help
Put and read the ads in local shop windows some people can't be bothered to post but if they read about something they want they may help

Yellowrose57 · 24/07/2026 16:34

Ds signed his tenancy this morning 😃. Obviously hes very grateful and happy.

In the kitchen theres a gap for the washing machine and cooker. But no space for a fridge. . The hall way is very narrow the width of the front door. So he can't put fridge in the hall he won't get by. Having it in the living room or bedroom wouldn't be very nice. I'm hoping there is somewhere he can put it and hes just not fully thought about it.

Because the front door and hall way is so narrow hes restricted to what kind of furniture he can have more so sofas so its gonna be hard.
