Terrified to go into my own garden..

I just want to preface this by saying that I’ve name changed and MNHQ will be able to verify that I’ve been on here a long while. Just pointing this out, as I’ll inevitably get troll hunted on this one as it makes very little sense! I assure you I have not left anything out whatsoever and I’m sorry it’s such a long post.

I’m a widowed parent of one 11yr old DD. I have a small-ish dog who thankfully doesn’t bark much (which is relevant to this situation).

2 years ago, my usually always very friendly & chatty next door neighbour, randomly blocked me from texting her - which I rarely ever did anyway tbh, only ever if there was a parcel here for her etc. The last time I’d spoken to her, everything had been great. I was utterly mystified but figured it’d be sorted eventually and I’d ask her when I saw her next. With it being winter I didn’t see her for a while and when I did, I was ignored. Really odd but ok…. Maybe I or DD had made some noise? Although she has always assured me vehemently that she can’t hear anything from our side but even so, I don’t allow DD to make noise for my own sake as well as that of others!

Last summer, there were a few occasions when I was in my back garden (6ft fence with vertical planks with small gaps in between) and neighbour’s Dad who was there, shouted over at me. Once when I was taking a photo of a random plant which had popped up so I could identify it, he shouts “Come round if you want to take photos, you fat fuck!” Now, I should’ve asked WTF he was talking about and corrected him but I was too stunned to speak! Another time I got called a “sad pathetic loser” when I was cutting sweet pea flowers off my trellis on our adjoining fence. Followed by him saying to his daughter “Don’t worry she’s obviously got no life” Again, I hugely regret not saying something back and asking what on earth I’m meant to have said or done wrong. But having escaped extremely violent DV, I just don’t have the strength to confront any male and probably never will. It’s fight or flight and I flee. Until today, that is.

Around the end of last year, the neighbour got a dog of their own and despite my calling my dog in every single time, theirs still barks loudly every single time he sees my dog through the fence. I’ve tried putting tarpaulin up on the adjoining fence to prevent their dog seeing mine but nope, it still keeps happening. Thankfully my dog doesn’t usually bark back and if he does, it’s one singular woof to show his displeasure, then he comes in!
About 2 months ago, I wrote neighbour herself a letter (as she just blanks me when I try speaking to her face to face) explaining that I’ve absolutely zero clue what I’ve done to upset her, apologised if it’s noise (though I really don’t think it is, as DD & I are quiet people and when DD is at school, I’m often asleep or at hospital) and explaining that I only have about 12-14 months left to live due to an autoimmune disorder which she actually knows I have, that I want to spend what time I have left with my child in peace and just want to be left alone and politely requested that they stop slamming their front door as it was making us both jump a mile and was affecting DD at school when it happens during the night. I was very polite and promised to do what I can on my part to try and mitigate the situation with her dog seeing mine through the fence (which I have done, I put tarpaulin up but clearly I need to add more!)

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and now her Dad is seemingly living there and is making mine & my daughter’s lives a living hell.
EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I open one of my French doors and either let my dog out for a wee or I dare to step out into my own garden, not only does their dog bark like mad at mine (who now just ignores theirs as he’s used to it!) I get “Oh for fuck’s sake!” or her little boy goes running inside shouting “Mum, Granddad, she’s in her garden again!!!” followed by “Oh for fuck’s sake! Fucking typical!” It’s got to the point where I’m genuinely anxious to go into my own garden and I’m not exaggerating and I’m a keen gardener! I can’t even nip to my greenhouse to get some lettuce without a “Oh for fuck’s sake, fat fuck is out again!” 😳
Last week, I had to mow the lawn as it was the first day I’d had in weeks where I was well enough to do it and they were having a BBQ (I don’t think there were any guests but I decided to be as quick as possible anyway) and well, he was fuming and they went storming inside, slamming the door. I don’t know what was said as I had the mower on but heard door slam. That one was probably my fault for mowing whilst they were having a BBQ but if I’d waited until the next time I was well enough, the grass would’ve been too long to mow!

Another thing which I’ve been ignoring in the hope that it naturally settles (and to avoid confrontation with him), is the fact that their dog barks the ENTIRE TIME he is left in the house alone. Barks loudly and howls. So bad that me making a phone call is nigh on impossible. It’s often overnight also, so that is hell for DD especially. This happened today and I’ve taken to recording clips of it just in case it’s needed in future. When it finally stopped, presumably as he came home, the first thing I did, was quietly let DDog out as I’d kept him in during the barking due to the noise coming from their side. Well, this was a mistake as their dog saw mine and erupted - as per usual! Mine didn’t bark back at all but DD grabbed the treat tub and told him to come in for obvious reasons and neighbour’s Dad shouts “FUCKING TWATS!!!!!” over the fence. Now I have never, ever responded to ANY of it but having just endured hours upon hours of their Alsation barking and howling I snapped and said, calmly, “Your dog has been barking all day!!!” to which he shouts “Because of you! YOU’RE CAUSING IT!!!” “Every fucking day you’re in your garden” I reply “And?!” At which point he slams their door and my DD bursts into tears and call me pathetic but so did I. I’m at my wits end. This is my home. My DD’s home and this is almost certainly the last summer of my life. My only hobby is quietly (& I do mean quietly) pottering around in my garden deadheading flowers or pruning roses etc.

  • I don’t ever have visitors besides my 82yr old mother (she’s my only remaining family besides DD) and what friends do bother with me, I just have catch up coffees with in Costa!
  • I don’t play music in my home or my garden. If I listen to a podcast or LBC, it’s on earphones.
  • My dog rarely barks and if he does, it’s only a tiny bit if he is barked at! He did once bark at an Owl ornament I bought but in his defence, it did blink at night time!!
  • I do not speak on the phone in the garden as everyone around me would hear and despite this massive long post, I am quite a quiet person usually!
  • DD is rarely in the garden (more’s the pity!) she prefers gaming! She used to play out front on her scooter with some kids from up the street but she’s been too frightened to, since neighbour’s Dad aggressively told her to “Piss off” once about a year ago when he’d arrived about 5 mins after neighbour had left the house and so, being 9, she told him. Who tells a 9yr old to piss off?

I have reported today’s incident to non-emergency police. However a. Officer won’t be free to talk to me until the end of next week which I’m sad about tbh. I could’ve used the advice as right now, I’m terrified to even let my dog out for a wee, let alone step into my garden.
Again, having escaped extreme DV, it’s very difficult for me to not default to flight mode. I’m still shaking and this happened 2 hours ago. Pathetic, I know. I already struggle with anxiety.

Sorry this was so long but I didn’t want to miss anything out and have to correct people or be accused of drip feeding!

There’s nothing I can do, is there?

How are things @TotallyTangerineGeum ?

Hi! Much the same tbh. Thanks for asking!

I did get a phone call from Adam telling me that when he went next door, they were like “Oh I’m very sorry for that ONE time I shouted but I was stressed out(?!?) and I think it’s probably best we don’t speak to each other at all….” - WTF? I’ve been shouted at countless times and I was the one who said months ago in the letter I wrote, that it’s probably best we avoid speaking to each other! So of course Adam was very much taking the position of “yeah, they just want to be left alone” etc etc. I am absolutely fuming. He’s 100% been swayed over to their side of things. I even said to him that they’d been baiting my dog all morning so that he would bark and he just cut me off and said “no no don’t worry about that, just don’t try to speak to them” - I bloody don’t! I haven’t in over 2 years! HE is shouting shit at me whenever I try to enter my own garden! But he just wouldn’t listen 🤷🏼‍♀️

I haven’t heard back from the MP and I’ve been very busy these last two weeks but I intend to contact the MP once again. I just worry that it’s going to come across as some petty neighbour argument that I’m running to the MP about because it isn’t going my way.

Im so very sorry for your update . I suppose it isn't surprising to some extent that your abusive neighbours have been convincing . It's a bit like when it's recommended not to go to marriage counselling with an abusive partner , as these people are so convincing.
Genuinely , will you be able to move to another housing association property ?
Can you use the fact that your illness makes it harder to use your stairs or anything else you can think of ?
( I wouldnt normally recommended playing dirty but this is such an unfair situation that really isn't fair you're trapped in !)

SallyRabbit · 08/08/2026 11:40

I suspect Adam is more on your side than you think but has to be seen to listen to both sides, at least at this stage. Hopefully your horrible neighbours will have had a scare, will know you’re keeping a record now (continue to do so, with evidence if you can) and will just ignore you. I suspect that’s the best possible outcome and I hope it happens.

good luck - and use your garden! Xx

Hi..can you ask your Doctor to write a letter to the Housing people..or contact them..saying you need to move due to medical reasons and the stress this upset is causing? Xx

LadyAvgeek · 08/08/2026 15:28

Hi, very disappointed but not surprised by Adam's response. It seems he doesn't have the ability to distinguish truth from fiction. Or, he has to be seen to not take sides and possibly has to report back to his manager for a "second opinion".

The suggestion of a Doctor's letter is a very good one. Often medical intervention is the catalyst for something to be done. Provided it doesn't take months to materialise.....

I’m sorry I’m really upset about something entirely different right now. Is it against MN rules to ask advice on the same thread about something unrelated? You all know my circumstances so it’s easier than having to start a new thread and explain it all

No, there are no rules, but it would probably be best to start a new thread and link this thread to it.

You also, need to link the new thread to this one so that everyone on this thread can access the new one.

Do you have a local councillor who might help you? The usual rules for anti social behaviour at the Housing Assoc may be 3 months but this is just awful so there ought to be ways of fighting your corner sooner.

I’m so sorry it’s like this for you. Hope you find someone to help you. We have some really good local councillors round here but appreciate it might not be like that everywhere

You’re all going to think so much less of me when you’ve read this but so be it.

It’s a really long story but recently, an old flame got back in touch (who I’ll refer to as M) and he was definitely ‘the one who got away’ and who I fully believe I should’ve ended up with, as much as I loved my late DH - who ultimately was abusive.

Anyway M& I went on a date in 2009 and I did really like him but I was in the throes of a very toxic on again-off again situationship so I didn’t pursue anything with him but he adored me (including my being bigger which is something I’ve never had from anyone before (my weight had always been off putting to everyone I’d ever been with) and I really liked him too! Stupidly I got back into my situationship and lost touch with him.

A since then he got back in touch but each time either one or both of us weren’t single so we chatted a bit and kept it platonic (we’ve always been great friends and have a big shared interest so always had lots to chat about - I never hid it from any previous partners, either) but every single time he got in touch, all those feelings for him came back - and he said the same - but why I never acted upon them and saw sense, I don’t know…?

Anyway, 10 years since the last time he got in touch, 2 weeks ago and totally out of the blue, I got a message from him! He just wanted to check in and see how I was doing as he’s away on business and had just found the message I’d sent him on social media late one night 4/5 years ago asking how he was. He’s now got a young child and he is still with his girlfriend of over 10 years! Yes, I know… The last time I’d spoken to him it was actually as a friend, he was asking advice because he’d tried to end it with his girlfriend as he just wasn’t happy but she’d threatened suicide! I obviously told him that regardless of our history, I was telling him as a friend that he needed to do the right thing and get her some help. That he can’t stay with someone out of fear for what they’d do to themselves…. Obviously he ignored this advice, as he said to me when got back in touch that he’d “decided to grow up, do some adulting and make the best of his relationship as I’d done with my late-DH….” I could’ve commented on all the many ways in which this is not a sensible approach but thought better of it..!

We’ve chatted pretty much non-stop since then anyway and it’s become very clear that we still have feelings for each other but obviously can’t act upon it. He says he feels just the same as I do but says he just can’t leave his girlfriend right now (they own a house together, they have a small child and she’s a SAHM) and tbh I wouldn’t ask him to in those circumstances. He knows about my health issues and is very supportive.

I’ve never cheated on anyone nor would I and I’ve never participated in anything that resulted in a man cheating (that I know of) but it’s bloody hard! He went home today and I’ll not hear from him again until his next trip which could be anything from 3-6 months from now. I know, I know, him talking to me like this when he’s in a relationship is emotional cheating and I stand against that, always. I’m not sharing this to get advice on how to get back with him - I can’t. Not right now. I’m asking advice on how to stop crying and kicking myself for the bad decisions I’ve made in the past that caused me to miss what was right in front of me?
There’s also an element of hearing how much fun he’s having with his job (same industry I worked in which is adjacent to our shared hobby) and seeing all I’ve missed out on being ill.

I’m being absolutely ridiculous aren’t I? I am extremely fragile emotionally right now and I’ve been single for almost 11 years, so there is likely an element of clinging to the first man to show love & attention to me in well over a decade (my DH never did, if I’m being brutally honest so it’s been about 15 years since I’ve had anyone else call me babe and tell me I’m beautiful etc) and that is likely clouding my normally sensible judgement but I cannot stop crying - NOT just because he’s gone home to his girlfriend, but because I’ve been shown what I could’ve had if I’d made better decisions AND my health wasn’t so bad.
I cannot stop crying and I cannot hide it from poor DD 😢

I think you have to remember that he is doing this while he is very much still with someone. That's not the kind of person you really wanted instead of your ex-H. You needed someone who knows as lovely but also not an abuser and not a cheater.

Imagine if you were the woman he did have a relationship and have a child with, and then while on a business trip he was visiting an old flame and going behind your back. I'm sure you wouldn't like it or understand it. It's wrong.

Personally, that kind of behaviour from him doesn't speak of a good character to me.

I understand a little where you are at, because I had a similar situation. When I was with my abuser/child's father, I received an email from my ex whom I had split up with due to circumstances rather than a falling out of love. If the circumstances were different we'd have stayed together and got married and had children. Instead, I ended up with an extremely abusive and dangerous man who was eventually put in prison for what he did to me and our daughter.

About one year before I was able to flee, my old flame emailed me. I saw it when I was at a bus stop. He had moved not far from me. I told him the truth about being trapped in the abusive relationship and how I was desperately trying to escape. He blamed himself saying if he hasn't done x y z then we would have stayed together and I'd never have got entangled with this abuser.

About 6 months later he tried to arrange to meet me when I was allowed out to take our child to pre-school. I told him I couldn't because I wasn't single. He was single during any contact so he wasn't cheating on anyone. I didn't see that having contact with him while I was still with someone would achieve anything positive. I am not a cheater and not someone who would encourage or facilitate someone else to cheat either.

I think it is easy to have wistful thinking and to put those rose tinted glasses on when your life is so challenging. The reality is, the relationships and attempts at reconnecting don't work and haven't worked for a reason.

Delphiniumandlupins · 08/08/2026 18:30

Oh you poor darling. You're not being "absolutely ridiculous" but a bit daft. Your life is really unfair and I'm cross with M because I don't think he's bringing anything positive to you. It's lovely to feel wanted and valued but he's no interest in offering more than words. Is he just in touch when he's on work trips away from home? Sounds as if you are a distraction when hes feeling a bit lonely. All these "what ifs" are highlighting the rough hand you have been dealt but you wouldn't have your lovely DD if you had made different choices in the past

TotallyTangerineGeum · 08/08/2026 18:32

@GottaBeStrongThe reality is, the relationships and attempts at reconnecting don't work and haven't worked for a reason.

Firstly I’m very sorry for what you’ve been through, that’s horrendous.

I understand where you’re coming from saying that it hasn’t happened for a reason, but the reason has been primarily me! Me and the stupid decisions I made.

Also I agree about how I’d feel if he did it to me. That’s why I’m not asking for advice on how to pursue anything with him. I’m just trying to give myself a kick up the arse as I’m just so incredibly sad.

On the neighbour issue - I'm so annoyed at "Adam". It's like he's paying lip service to the actual bloody job he's supposed to do. Did you get his name, or an email? I'd look through your posts on here, do some cutting and pasting and send that to the Housing Association and say you want to escalate your complaint to Adam's boss as your complaints have not been dealt with in an appropriate manner.

On the man from the past issue - look back to your original post and see if you can recognise that woman with the clear self-esteem issues. I don't think you are in the right place emotionally to make any rational decisions - on anything! I'm not going to tell you what to do or not to do, but think to yourself - is my next move going to make me hate myself down the line? You are vulnerable and there are men that will abuse that vulnerability xxxx

I'm so sorry that Adam is useless and you are wading through treacle. Your time is urgently precious

I'm absolutely on your side and you are being failed.
No one is telling you their clear organised procedure for proving your case. Is it really just Adams opinion alone that proves a case? From one visit. No it isn’t.

Why aren't environmental health giving you the tools to put your proof forward. (Rhetorical question).

I can't fathom out what's so muddled at their end. You must be demented with frustration and disbelief.
I was given clear advice on the requirements to prove my complaint. It would give you such faith and hope if only your authorities would offer you the procedure.

IME First a log of events. Then recording him. Then visits from environmental officers available 24/7 to rush round my address to witness the source of noise. Finally court case.
