Terrified to go into my own garden..

TotallyTangerineGeum · 17/07/2026 16:33

I just want to preface this by saying that I’ve name changed and MNHQ will be able to verify that I’ve been on here a long while. Just pointing this out, as I’ll inevitably get troll hunted on this one as it makes very little sense! I assure you I have not left anything out whatsoever and I’m sorry it’s such a long post.

I’m a widowed parent of one 11yr old DD. I have a small-ish dog who thankfully doesn’t bark much (which is relevant to this situation).

2 years ago, my usually always very friendly & chatty next door neighbour, randomly blocked me from texting her - which I rarely ever did anyway tbh, only ever if there was a parcel here for her etc. The last time I’d spoken to her, everything had been great. I was utterly mystified but figured it’d be sorted eventually and I’d ask her when I saw her next. With it being winter I didn’t see her for a while and when I did, I was ignored. Really odd but ok…. Maybe I or DD had made some noise? Although she has always assured me vehemently that she can’t hear anything from our side but even so, I don’t allow DD to make noise for my own sake as well as that of others!

Last summer, there were a few occasions when I was in my back garden (6ft fence with vertical planks with small gaps in between) and neighbour’s Dad who was there, shouted over at me. Once when I was taking a photo of a random plant which had popped up so I could identify it, he shouts “Come round if you want to take photos, you fat fuck!” Now, I should’ve asked WTF he was talking about and corrected him but I was too stunned to speak! Another time I got called a “sad pathetic loser” when I was cutting sweet pea flowers off my trellis on our adjoining fence. Followed by him saying to his daughter “Don’t worry she’s obviously got no life” Again, I hugely regret not saying something back and asking what on earth I’m meant to have said or done wrong. But having escaped extremely violent DV, I just don’t have the strength to confront any male and probably never will. It’s fight or flight and I flee. Until today, that is.

Around the end of last year, the neighbour got a dog of their own and despite my calling my dog in every single time, theirs still barks loudly every single time he sees my dog through the fence. I’ve tried putting tarpaulin up on the adjoining fence to prevent their dog seeing mine but nope, it still keeps happening. Thankfully my dog doesn’t usually bark back and if he does, it’s one singular woof to show his displeasure, then he comes in!
About 2 months ago, I wrote neighbour herself a letter (as she just blanks me when I try speaking to her face to face) explaining that I’ve absolutely zero clue what I’ve done to upset her, apologised if it’s noise (though I really don’t think it is, as DD & I are quiet people and when DD is at school, I’m often asleep or at hospital) and explaining that I only have about 12-14 months left to live due to an autoimmune disorder which she actually knows I have, that I want to spend what time I have left with my child in peace and just want to be left alone and politely requested that they stop slamming their front door as it was making us both jump a mile and was affecting DD at school when it happens during the night. I was very polite and promised to do what I can on my part to try and mitigate the situation with her dog seeing mine through the fence (which I have done, I put tarpaulin up but clearly I need to add more!)

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and now her Dad is seemingly living there and is making mine & my daughter’s lives a living hell.
EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I open one of my French doors and either let my dog out for a wee or I dare to step out into my own garden, not only does their dog bark like mad at mine (who now just ignores theirs as he’s used to it!) I get “Oh for fuck’s sake!” or her little boy goes running inside shouting “Mum, Granddad, she’s in her garden again!!!” followed by “Oh for fuck’s sake! Fucking typical!” It’s got to the point where I’m genuinely anxious to go into my own garden and I’m not exaggerating and I’m a keen gardener! I can’t even nip to my greenhouse to get some lettuce without a “Oh for fuck’s sake, fat fuck is out again!” 😳
Last week, I had to mow the lawn as it was the first day I’d had in weeks where I was well enough to do it and they were having a BBQ (I don’t think there were any guests but I decided to be as quick as possible anyway) and well, he was fuming and they went storming inside, slamming the door. I don’t know what was said as I had the mower on but heard door slam. That one was probably my fault for mowing whilst they were having a BBQ but if I’d waited until the next time I was well enough, the grass would’ve been too long to mow!

Another thing which I’ve been ignoring in the hope that it naturally settles (and to avoid confrontation with him), is the fact that their dog barks the ENTIRE TIME he is left in the house alone. Barks loudly and howls. So bad that me making a phone call is nigh on impossible. It’s often overnight also, so that is hell for DD especially. This happened today and I’ve taken to recording clips of it just in case it’s needed in future. When it finally stopped, presumably as he came home, the first thing I did, was quietly let DDog out as I’d kept him in during the barking due to the noise coming from their side. Well, this was a mistake as their dog saw mine and erupted - as per usual! Mine didn’t bark back at all but DD grabbed the treat tub and told him to come in for obvious reasons and neighbour’s Dad shouts “FUCKING TWATS!!!!!” over the fence. Now I have never, ever responded to ANY of it but having just endured hours upon hours of their Alsation barking and howling I snapped and said, calmly, “Your dog has been barking all day!!!” to which he shouts “Because of you! YOU’RE CAUSING IT!!!” “Every fucking day you’re in your garden” I reply “And?!” At which point he slams their door and my DD bursts into tears and call me pathetic but so did I. I’m at my wits end. This is my home. My DD’s home and this is almost certainly the last summer of my life. My only hobby is quietly (& I do mean quietly) pottering around in my garden deadheading flowers or pruning roses etc.

  • I don’t ever have visitors besides my 82yr old mother (she’s my only remaining family besides DD) and what friends do bother with me, I just have catch up coffees with in Costa!
  • I don’t play music in my home or my garden. If I listen to a podcast or LBC, it’s on earphones.
  • My dog rarely barks and if he does, it’s only a tiny bit if he is barked at! He did once bark at an Owl ornament I bought but in his defence, it did blink at night time!!
  • I do not speak on the phone in the garden as everyone around me would hear and despite this massive long post, I am quite a quiet person usually!
  • DD is rarely in the garden (more’s the pity!) she prefers gaming! She used to play out front on her scooter with some kids from up the street but she’s been too frightened to, since neighbour’s Dad aggressively told her to “Piss off” once about a year ago when he’d arrived about 5 mins after neighbour had left the house and so, being 9, she told him. Who tells a 9yr old to piss off?

I have reported today’s incident to non-emergency police. However a. Officer won’t be free to talk to me until the end of next week which I’m sad about tbh. I could’ve used the advice as right now, I’m terrified to even let my dog out for a wee, let alone step into my garden.
Again, having escaped extreme DV, it’s very difficult for me to not default to flight mode. I’m still shaking and this happened 2 hours ago. Pathetic, I know. I already struggle with anxiety.

Sorry this was so long but I didn’t want to miss anything out and have to correct people or be accused of drip feeding!

There’s nothing I can do, is there?

I agree - phone record everything you can. write an online diary of all of it. Do Housing have a complaint process and an Ombudsman. Worth that alongside MP. Gawd I would even recommend the local paper.

And here it is! I knew I’d get this. I can assure you I’m not missing out ANYTHING. This has had me wracking my brains for over 2 years now! Unless they think it was me who reported them for their driveway being in disarray but it wasn’t and I’ve told her this! Very clearly and firmly. Her driveway has zero effect on me and to be honest, just makes my own home look even tidier than it already is!
You clearly have never experienced people turn on you for no apparent reason and I’m glad for you, but I can assure you it does happen and has!

Completely agree it absolutely does happen. Close neighbour of ours who has caused various issues for the last few years has started a rather childish campaign of talking to neighbour on other side about us, loud enough for me to hear when outside. Ironically there have been multiple complaints about them from at least half a dozen other properties but they've decided we are the one and only culprits 🙄 bizarrely, despite contact from our mutual HA, we ourselves have never triggered an active complaint- basically there was no need, and as they are so loud we've heard the "interactions" regarding their behaviour between them and other non HA neighbours for ages, and they had no issue telling my delightful neighbours they were going to report them. People do turn like this, mainly thinking attack is their best form of defence and make people suffer around them. I have read most of your thread OP and I am so, so sorry you are going through this. Excellent advice already given eg MP, also make your GP aware. If you have enough involvement the HA will have to act. I'm very aware of the '3 month rule' however, the effect on your health, wellbeing, your child, and so many other dreadful aspects of this mean this should be escalated ASAP. I just wanted to jump in anyway and offer solidarity and support, and huge genuine sympathy. To be scared to use your outside space is an awful thing. ASB in this country with entitled and nasty individuals making other peoples lives a misery is getting out of hand.

There must be some service where you can rent a really big buff facially tattooed 'boyfriend' (or girlfriend!) to hang around and give them a bit of taste of their own medicine? Verbally abusing them right back?! They are bullies and being horrible because you're a woman on her own.

I do half joke but only half. It fee;s a bit like you need a village right now, loads of witnesses and people around on your team who can call their behaviour for what it is

I had the same thought. They are picking on a woman alone with her small child WHO IS DYING! They wouldn’t do this with a man around. What disgusting cowards. I’m so so sorry you are dealing with this. The behaviour of your neighbour’s father is beyond any bounds of normal acceptable behaviour. The swearing and abuse (the things he is saying to you should not come out of a person’s mouth) is just on another level.

If your dog was a complete menace and you were blasting music all day he still has no business speaking that way.

Sadly, I think once these predator bullies get a whiff of weakness they ramp it up. Just because they can. He’s a small man feeling powerful now.

I live alone with my child too, and while on the whole I have lovely neighbours, I’ve had experiences with neighbouring men who try to dominate us (trying to build on our land, taking our parking spot etc) but I’m a fairly robust person and channel my best inner Karen at them on full blast. Once they realise you’re not an easy target they back down. You can’t do this in a situation where your health is so precarious, so it’s extremely hard for you.

Is there a man you can have come over and help at all? In the absence of that, I would absolutely be calling the police. Not online reports, but direct calls and asking them to come around for your safety.

You should be able to spend as much time in your own garden as you please. Is a bigger fence an option?

Agree with all the above. The noise app will only give 10 30 second recordings per day but you can back this up with other media and diary sheets. I had a friend who had to do all this.

I wish we could all get together and have a massive, rowdy party in your garden until the early hours just to piss off these vile neighbors of yours op! Is anyone up in North Yorks? X

No but I'd happily travel!!

Hicks123 · 19/07/2026 08:58

I am so very sorry to hear you may only have 12-14 months to live and wonder if you have reached out to your local hospice for support for yourself and your daughter? They support during the last 12 months or so of life and often have family liaison and advocacy support. You sound like you are coping incredibly but with no support. Given all you are going through they may be able to provide some emotional and practical support for you and your daughter. This could be worth a phone call to explore.

EmmaB1309 · 19/07/2026 09:02

Yes get some kind of audio and visual recording device to record this behaviour and take it straight to the Police. Never mind the three month nonsense other agencies are telling you. This isn’t just a noise issue, he’s verbally abusing you. Threatening and intimidating behaviour is a criminal offence. Grit your teeth and go out in your garden several times once you have the equipment and gather your evidence.
It sounds to me like his main issue is that he has an out of control dog who barks whenever someone is in your garden and rather than accepting responsibility and dealing with it he’s blaming you for taking you and your dog into your own garden! He’s pretty much said that’s the reason.
I would also be tempted to have a strong male friend or family member stay with you until this is resolved. Preferably by the police charging him and issuing some kind of bail conditions.

Definitely agree with this. This is harassment, verbal abuse, intimidation; so I think the 3 month rule should be irrelevant, the more I've read this morning.

Is there a chance the wife has been reading this?

He is living next door with the daughter and her son and dog

BountifulPantry · 19/07/2026 09:17

Would you like to borrow my very lovely but also very terrifying- looking partner for a week?

He looks like a Highland Games competitor (google it) combined with growing up in a North West council estate.

Something tells me they would stop after that.

I was wondering about this, too. And whether there’s a charity for OP’s condition that may be able to advocate or offer legal support or at least connect her with more support to deal with this issue, or maybe a young carer’s charity who could do the same.

WalmartWitney · 19/07/2026 09:24

Hi Op. First of all so sorry you don't have long to live. Very sad for you and your daughter. You say you have no family, what will happen to her when you pass? Sorry to ask. As a fellow DV survivor, I take no prisoners. I would love to sort these MO FO's out for you!

Are you aware of home swapping sites: "Homeswapper" and "Glassbob?". They can be very good for social housing swaps, alternatively, I think you may be able to ask your HA for a "managed move". If you need someone to chat to about it, feel free to PM me. 🙂

Lobelia123 · 19/07/2026 09:27

This is clearly one of those situations where the more you back down and try to 'comply' or pacify the foul mouthed asshole living next door, the more you will embolden him to abuse you more. Hes a bully. Bullies thrive on the sense of power they get when people are afraid and cower - which is exactly what you do when you scurry around trying to make yourself small to accommodate him. Darling I realise you are non confronatational, but the only way to a peaceful life is to strike back with the only currency this old misogynistic POS understands/ has any respect for. When he shouts something about the fat fuck, shout back, clean your mouth you foul old asshole! And if he comes back aggressively, meet him aquare on. And defiantly get out into your garden and enjoy your life!!!! If you cant stand the shouting and insults, turn on some music or wear headphones. With kindness, stop being such a wet lettuce. You dont have to start WW3 BUT you should and must stand up for yourslef. remember YOU are the owner of your home. YOU pay your bills. You are fully entitled to enjoy your home and live your life as you see fit. Take back your own power!!!! You have done nothing wrong, so stop sitting pondering over what 'it' may be. You irritate them by the mere fact that you exist. Thats their problem. You have to grow a bit of a thicker skin and get on with it.

TooHotToBoogie · 19/07/2026 09:31

Can I just say - anyone talking about bikers etc, it's because this vile c**t of a man only understands big stick mentality. Fight fire with fire because it's all he knows

Missypuddingchops · 19/07/2026 09:37

Whats annoying me about this is...if he did this to you in the street he'd be in trouble but as it comes down to being'neighbourly dispute' nothing is done! Even though its only on his side! A grown man! Please remember if he threatens you in anyway its classed as assault so if that happens call the police. Try to record as much as you can on your phone hun

MumToBe1980 · 19/07/2026 09:53

Im so sorry about your situation. I would be tempted to find somewhere to rent and rent your house via a letting agent. Im sad to hear about your diagnosis and would want to spend my remaining time enjoying life with my daughter rather than battling with these awful people. I know you shouldn't have to do this but would prioritise enjoyment of your life xxx

Sadly not, I’m up in North Yorkshire

I know there are lots of replies so you may have missed it, but a few people including me have mentioned your medical team. Do you have much of a team involved? Have you mentioned it to them? Or a charity relating to your illness (if you are unsure which I am happy to find links if you let me know which autoimmune illness I can research any particular options, if you dont feel comfortable to say here I am happy to have a PM and can research for you).

I just think given the complexity with your health, there will be additional support on the medical side too.

budlea64 · 19/07/2026 10:39

I just wanted to send you some love 💞 and hugs. I've got tears in my eyes reading your thread.
You've had some good support and advice on here. You shouldn't have to deal with this on top of what you're going through. I'm so angry with the dicks that live next door to you. But dicks and ignorant bully neighbours are everywhere unfortunately.
I'm hoping the police go round and have a word as this is harassment. Even the comments every time you go in your garden are appalling. Put your phone on the recording app before you step outside, some of those comments you have endured would be proof of harassment.
I know Harrogate, everyone thinks it's posh but like every town, city and village there's twats and rough families. Don't get me started on druggies in Harrogate...
Good luck 💐

KhakiReader · 19/07/2026 10:48

They sound awful..I'm afraid I would give it back..but I understand your situation..I've been there myself..spent years being afraid of men..taking abuse of our awful neighbours..but then something snapped and I started shouting back..you mustn't let these twats rule you...its your garden..they are bullies! Keep reporting them..every day..dont be quiet..put loud music on..put ur headphones on and carry on gardening..you then cant hear them anyway! Good luck and I hope you can get some peace and happiness 😊

PeanutsLunadexter · 19/07/2026 11:04

Please don't allow this low life "man" intimidate you, You are in your own home to do as you please, like the suggestion of headphones, I dislike my male neighbour so I ignore him and carry on like he doesn't exist.capture his aggressive, verbal. ignorant rants if you can and report. Sorry you are going through this.

Ohcrumbbbs · 19/07/2026 11:09

This is awful for you, some people get the wrong idea and run with it unfortunately, what ignorant people that they won’t even explain. The situation with their dog is very similar to ours - large dog barks and howls , ours runs out barks once if that and runs back in, I don’t think it’s seeing your dog that causes it , I think they smell everything that’s going on . Best of luck with it and know that it will pass 💐

BirdsongSunshine · 19/07/2026 11:19

@TotallyTangerineGeum firstly I would love to give you an extremely big (un) mumsnetty hug.

Your post has upset me and filled me with anger. I’m so very sorry you’ve had to endure this. Your home should be your sanctuary, yours and your DD’s safe space. This absolutely can’t be tolerated any more.

You’re doing the right thing in contacting your MP, who sounds brilliant. From now on don’t respond to them in any way, shape or form. The noise cancelling headphones are a great idea.
I’d be a little concerned about him seeing your new camera installation, I wouldn’t want to give him any further excuses to shout abuse at you. But I do agree, you need to record everything from now on. Use your thread for any further incidents too, we’ll support you as best we can.

I wish I lived in Harrogate, I would just like to come over, have a cup of tea with you, and be the support you so desperately need.

You’ve got an army behind you. Please keep posting. Please use your garden, don’t engage with them. They are the problem and not you my lovely.

Keep us all updated. ❤️

Bikenutz · 19/07/2026 11:21

It sounds like a targeted campaign of intimidation and harassment to me.

My advice:

  1. Continue using your garden normally.
  2. Keep a detailed incident diary.
  3. Preserve recordings.
  4. Avoid direct confrontation.
  5. Report further incidents through 101 if appropriate.
  6. Stay in touch with your council regarding antisocial behaviour and any excessive dog barking.
  7. Make sure the impact on your daughter is documented.

What comes across from your post is someone who has been dealing with a great deal, is unwell, is trying hard not to cause problems for anyone, and has finally reached the point where enough is enough. Sending you big hug 💐

Moving is now my aim. Might not be do-able, but I can’t deal with this. The dog is begging to go into the garden to play and I need some tomatoes from my greenhouse but I can’t risk it! :(

Can I ask what autoimmune disorder you have that is terminal? Just out of curiosity.
