Terrified to go into my own garden..

TotallyTangerineGeum · 17/07/2026 16:33

I just want to preface this by saying that I’ve name changed and MNHQ will be able to verify that I’ve been on here a long while. Just pointing this out, as I’ll inevitably get troll hunted on this one as it makes very little sense! I assure you I have not left anything out whatsoever and I’m sorry it’s such a long post.

I’m a widowed parent of one 11yr old DD. I have a small-ish dog who thankfully doesn’t bark much (which is relevant to this situation).

2 years ago, my usually always very friendly & chatty next door neighbour, randomly blocked me from texting her - which I rarely ever did anyway tbh, only ever if there was a parcel here for her etc. The last time I’d spoken to her, everything had been great. I was utterly mystified but figured it’d be sorted eventually and I’d ask her when I saw her next. With it being winter I didn’t see her for a while and when I did, I was ignored. Really odd but ok…. Maybe I or DD had made some noise? Although she has always assured me vehemently that she can’t hear anything from our side but even so, I don’t allow DD to make noise for my own sake as well as that of others!

Last summer, there were a few occasions when I was in my back garden (6ft fence with vertical planks with small gaps in between) and neighbour’s Dad who was there, shouted over at me. Once when I was taking a photo of a random plant which had popped up so I could identify it, he shouts “Come round if you want to take photos, you fat fuck!” Now, I should’ve asked WTF he was talking about and corrected him but I was too stunned to speak! Another time I got called a “sad pathetic loser” when I was cutting sweet pea flowers off my trellis on our adjoining fence. Followed by him saying to his daughter “Don’t worry she’s obviously got no life” Again, I hugely regret not saying something back and asking what on earth I’m meant to have said or done wrong. But having escaped extremely violent DV, I just don’t have the strength to confront any male and probably never will. It’s fight or flight and I flee. Until today, that is.

Around the end of last year, the neighbour got a dog of their own and despite my calling my dog in every single time, theirs still barks loudly every single time he sees my dog through the fence. I’ve tried putting tarpaulin up on the adjoining fence to prevent their dog seeing mine but nope, it still keeps happening. Thankfully my dog doesn’t usually bark back and if he does, it’s one singular woof to show his displeasure, then he comes in!
About 2 months ago, I wrote neighbour herself a letter (as she just blanks me when I try speaking to her face to face) explaining that I’ve absolutely zero clue what I’ve done to upset her, apologised if it’s noise (though I really don’t think it is, as DD & I are quiet people and when DD is at school, I’m often asleep or at hospital) and explaining that I only have about 12-14 months left to live due to an autoimmune disorder which she actually knows I have, that I want to spend what time I have left with my child in peace and just want to be left alone and politely requested that they stop slamming their front door as it was making us both jump a mile and was affecting DD at school when it happens during the night. I was very polite and promised to do what I can on my part to try and mitigate the situation with her dog seeing mine through the fence (which I have done, I put tarpaulin up but clearly I need to add more!)

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and now her Dad is seemingly living there and is making mine & my daughter’s lives a living hell.
EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I open one of my French doors and either let my dog out for a wee or I dare to step out into my own garden, not only does their dog bark like mad at mine (who now just ignores theirs as he’s used to it!) I get “Oh for fuck’s sake!” or her little boy goes running inside shouting “Mum, Granddad, she’s in her garden again!!!” followed by “Oh for fuck’s sake! Fucking typical!” It’s got to the point where I’m genuinely anxious to go into my own garden and I’m not exaggerating and I’m a keen gardener! I can’t even nip to my greenhouse to get some lettuce without a “Oh for fuck’s sake, fat fuck is out again!” 😳
Last week, I had to mow the lawn as it was the first day I’d had in weeks where I was well enough to do it and they were having a BBQ (I don’t think there were any guests but I decided to be as quick as possible anyway) and well, he was fuming and they went storming inside, slamming the door. I don’t know what was said as I had the mower on but heard door slam. That one was probably my fault for mowing whilst they were having a BBQ but if I’d waited until the next time I was well enough, the grass would’ve been too long to mow!

Another thing which I’ve been ignoring in the hope that it naturally settles (and to avoid confrontation with him), is the fact that their dog barks the ENTIRE TIME he is left in the house alone. Barks loudly and howls. So bad that me making a phone call is nigh on impossible. It’s often overnight also, so that is hell for DD especially. This happened today and I’ve taken to recording clips of it just in case it’s needed in future. When it finally stopped, presumably as he came home, the first thing I did, was quietly let DDog out as I’d kept him in during the barking due to the noise coming from their side. Well, this was a mistake as their dog saw mine and erupted - as per usual! Mine didn’t bark back at all but DD grabbed the treat tub and told him to come in for obvious reasons and neighbour’s Dad shouts “FUCKING TWATS!!!!!” over the fence. Now I have never, ever responded to ANY of it but having just endured hours upon hours of their Alsation barking and howling I snapped and said, calmly, “Your dog has been barking all day!!!” to which he shouts “Because of you! YOU’RE CAUSING IT!!!” “Every fucking day you’re in your garden” I reply “And?!” At which point he slams their door and my DD bursts into tears and call me pathetic but so did I. I’m at my wits end. This is my home. My DD’s home and this is almost certainly the last summer of my life. My only hobby is quietly (& I do mean quietly) pottering around in my garden deadheading flowers or pruning roses etc.

  • I don’t ever have visitors besides my 82yr old mother (she’s my only remaining family besides DD) and what friends do bother with me, I just have catch up coffees with in Costa!
  • I don’t play music in my home or my garden. If I listen to a podcast or LBC, it’s on earphones.
  • My dog rarely barks and if he does, it’s only a tiny bit if he is barked at! He did once bark at an Owl ornament I bought but in his defence, it did blink at night time!!
  • I do not speak on the phone in the garden as everyone around me would hear and despite this massive long post, I am quite a quiet person usually!
  • DD is rarely in the garden (more’s the pity!) she prefers gaming! She used to play out front on her scooter with some kids from up the street but she’s been too frightened to, since neighbour’s Dad aggressively told her to “Piss off” once about a year ago when he’d arrived about 5 mins after neighbour had left the house and so, being 9, she told him. Who tells a 9yr old to piss off?

I have reported today’s incident to non-emergency police. However a. Officer won’t be free to talk to me until the end of next week which I’m sad about tbh. I could’ve used the advice as right now, I’m terrified to even let my dog out for a wee, let alone step into my garden.
Again, having escaped extreme DV, it’s very difficult for me to not default to flight mode. I’m still shaking and this happened 2 hours ago. Pathetic, I know. I already struggle with anxiety.

Sorry this was so long but I didn’t want to miss anything out and have to correct people or be accused of drip feeding!

There’s nothing I can do, is there?

Is your neighbour a local ? as in were they born and badly brought up there ? Went to school there ?

Relevance? Veiled racism?

Cailin66 · 18/07/2026 10:11

If their dog is left at home alone howling all day could you call the RSPA. I would phone the police every single time your neighbour is abusive to you.

Biker friends?
Why?
Assumptions of character or stereotyping.
How ignorant.

I agree and also think involving innocent men on the basis of their size (Rugby players?) is a ridiculous idea. Anything that coukd be seen as the OP being in the wrong will be counter productive in the long run.

The email to the MP suggested above is an excellent idea. Just copy and paste this now. There is no need to wait until office hours as the MP's staff will read it when they're ready at least you will feel like you've done something positive.

I am so sorry that you are experiencing this OP. No one should be forced out of their own garden. I think you need to start recording these abusive comments (using your phone if you can) and keep a diary of them. That should enable the police to act. I do hope you can re-find peace and tranquility in your garden.

Cardamomandlemons · 18/07/2026 10:21

Don't get bikers round. That will look like you are escalating. Put up cameras all over that can record the audio (but don't video anywhere that isn't your own garden) and do plenty of gardening outside with a friend (preferably one who looks like an adorable older lady but is actually made of steel). Ignore the provocation (never answer back) but just be present outside minding your own business.

TotallyTangerineGeum · 18/07/2026 10:23

Non-update, update: Sorry I fell asleep super early last night. Well, early for me!

Shortly after this all happened yesterday, DD (who was only on watch to determine when it was safe to let DDog out back!) saw him leave the house next door and then come back a short while later to drop neighbour and her son, off. He apparently then left and all evening, not one of them came out into their garden - not even the dog! I don’t spy on my neighbours obviously, but as you can understand, for last night at least, I didn’t want DDog to go out there whilst any of them were out as I simply couldn’t take another round of nonsense in the same day.
Normally, when I step out into my garden, one of their French doors is usually open and up against the adjoining fence (not that I’m looking but it’s hard to miss!) but it wasn’t last night! So I don’t think he or the dog came back, so DDog got to enjoy the garden undisturbed all evening, thank god. I didn’t go into the garden myself as I was just emotionally exhausted from all the crying. I haven’t cried that hard in actual years.

Obviously I won’t be allowing them to banish me from my own garden completely. However as I’m sure you can understand, if at times I’m not in the mood for any potential drama, then I’ll do what I can to avoid it. I will however be taking & following all the headphone/earplug advice and not reacting to anything. I’ll also be onto the local MP Monday morning and the council’s ASB team.
I’ve decided to get a CCTV camera for the back, rather than putting another Ring doorbell there as the Ring doorbell on my front door, doesn’t record everything even though I have the motion-sensitivity set to the highest setting; It’s still missed a number of occurrences over the years. To those who are unfamiliar, Ring doorbells aren’t recording 24/7 they’re motion activated and you set how sensitive you want that motion-detection to be.
I also want something that’s going to record audio if they are out of shot but shouting things! A Ring doorbell won’t activate on sound alone. Obviously I’m not looking to invade her privacy so it won’t be close enough to record every regular conversation she has in her own garden; that would be an unacceptable invasion of her rights and I intend to keep my own hands clean in this. It also won’t be facing her property, just the fence and close enough to catch any raised voices, or anything chucked over the fence! I’m worried he might try to poison my dog which I’ve zero basis for, he just seems nasty enough to do something like that. Also I’ve heard him REALLY shouting at their dog and I mean SCREAMING at him. Nasty man.

I'd be hounding the police and really laying it on. Fuck them being too busy!

Violinist64 · 18/07/2026 10:46

This is a police matter as well as the other agencies involved with this family. From now on, every time this man is abusive, you need to record his voice on your phone and lodge the recording to the police. You also need to make the police aware of your personal situation and just how vulnerable you are. Have you been to the Citizens Advice Bureau? They offer free advice and are generally much more knowledgeable than the average MN member.

LancashireButterPie · 18/07/2026 10:46

This thread has upset me more than anything I've read on MN for years. I have no further advice to add to the well informed info you've been given by others but I just wanted to let you know that you are very much in my thoughts and I'm appalled at the heartless behaviour of your neighbours. Bullies should never win.

fiorentina · 18/07/2026 10:48

I suspect someone reported them for something non noise related and they think it’s you. Your daughter is quite young so unlikely to be this and you know her best but I did live next door to a single mum who was nice but her teen daughter was fairly awful when her mum wasn’t around. V loud music, regularly throwing rubbish and cigarette butts into our garden etc.

They sound utterly unpleasant.

If you rent I’d honestly move and find somewhere more pleasant, life shouldn’t be like this. I’m so sorry for you.

TotallyTangerineGeum · 18/07/2026 10:52

Dymaxion · 17/07/2026 22:25

I do wonder if another neighbour has complained about the dog barking and they have put two and two together and made five ? Do you know any of the other neighbours @TotallyTangerineGeum ?

she blocked me and stopped talking to me, long before she got the dog. I do think that they believe it was me who reported her for rubbish in her driveway though. However it was not and I’ve told her it wasn’t me in that letter I wrote a couple of months ago!

There is no guarantee that you'll find better neighbours elsewhere. Moving is not always possible and doesn't necessarily solve the problem.
Some people live round bad neighbours and just brave it out and try and ride it. Sometimes things can get better. We can't all just move and think everything will be fine where we move too.

Housing association. Have reported but they cannot act until 3 months after my first report. Insane.

Do they know of the situation ? I would write and cc MP in also

You have every right to enjoy your home and garden

Loohoo22 · 18/07/2026 11:05

OP if you are both HA tenants then the council ASB team will just refer you back to the HA for their ASB team to deal with. They only get involved if one or both tenants are private. You need to push your HA into action. Shout the loudest and they will listen I promise.

Tcateh · 18/07/2026 11:10

I'm sorry I've not read entire thread op.
I'm so sorry for what you're being subjected to.

Ime housing call handlers can sometimes be ill informed for various reasons.
Can you find out who your housing officer is.
If they don't help or get in touch then write an email.
If you pop your housing association it to ai it can give you the details you need.

I've been having similar problems but not on the verbally abusive side unfortunately my neighbour bought theirs from the housing association.
Xx

Well done OP. It's not easy to think things through when you are in the thick of things and stressed. You have a plan and I'm hoping it makes you feel as if you are more in control. Its good to hear you intend to ignore them and quietly go about your business. As you've worked out, this needs kid gloves and quiet, stealthlike manoeuvres to outwit them. I'm hoping that once they can see their words and actions are having no effect, they will back off. If not, you are getting everything in place. This must be incredibly stressful to live with and I'm proud of you, even though I don't know you x

You could email the MP now so they have it first thing Monday

RigsbysCat · 18/07/2026 11:41

OP I am beyond appalled at what I have read here. I had a nightmare neighbour for many years until I just couldn't take any more and moved. People who haven't experienced this, don't always understand how this toxic behaviour seeps into and affects your whole life. It is so very hard to ignore when it's happening in what should be your safe space from the world.

The fact that you only have a short time left with your young daughter and your neighbour still behaves like this makes my blood boil on your behalf. I simply can't understand how people can be so devoid of basic decency.

I'm afraid I have no advice to give really, I tried everything with my former neighbour and none of it worked. I think trying to block it out with headphones is really the only way forward if hearing it upsets you. A letter to your MP also seems like a really good idea.

I hope you get some resolution OP. Maybe the police visit will help in some way, at least it will maybe make them think twice about targeting you like this.

Please keep posting if you need to vent or just need a bit of online support. While mumsnet can't solve your neighbour problem, lots of us are here to listen.

I wish you, your DD and your Ddog all the very best and hope things improve for you soon💐

Exactly. I’ve never understood being put off by the police saying they’re busy. Make them so busy they want to get rid of you by dealing with your issue. I’d be down at the station insisting they take each days complaint in writing.

I’d also take a note of each phone call with the police, and send a summary to them by email:

“Dear Y police,

Saturday 18 July, neighbour X called me z, I phoned Y police station today at 10:45 and spoke to police officer a , he informed me they had no time to investigate and the police would come back to me in one weeks time. Attached please find a video of X shouting verbally today. This has made me fearful. …”

Multiple times a day if necessary. If emails aren’t allowed, hand deliver a letter, and get them to sign for it.

cherrytree12345 · 18/07/2026 13:06

Just a thought although not directly relevant, is her father supposed to be living there - is he on the tenancy agreement . Also is she on benefits and not declaring her father living there. You sound like you don’t want yo escalate things, but if they are making you life miserable why not return the favour

Aww yes they’re absolutely stunning! I bought two and put one in a pot and the other in the border but the ones in the pot have done far better, weirdly! 5ft tall now.

Thank you for your kind words. Yes I do feel better thanks, mostly thanks to you all on here!
