My Gran told me my cousin died after drinking coke

This was like 35 years ago and as a child/teen she always used to say to me don’t drink coke straight out the fridge as it could give you a heart attack.

I obviously took it with a pinch of salt and assumed his tragic heart attack was a coincidence and not caused by a cold drink.

I’ve just realised, wasn’t that sort of coke was it! I’ve messaged another relative who’s confirmed my suspicions 🙈

My auntie told me that the drink coke contained cocaine. I spent a long time amazed and horrified that people roamed the streets drinking it.

I think it did, originally, have cocaine in it. A small amount. I mean, the name must have come from somewhere.

Did she believe it to be true and was equally horrified by the coke consumption?

Think @SwedishEdith is right and back in the day it did have some cocaine. Probably not in the 1980s though.

She was pretty eccentric so was outraged at that but also outraged at things that were totally normal, while also being fine with things that were definitely not the norm! Not the best sounding board overall!

I’m a bit confused - why would your gran say “drinking” coke if she were referring to the drug not the drink? You don’t drink the drug?

Was your gran equally confused/naive? If she was warning you off cold fizzy drinks perhaps she didn't know much about drugs.

Presumably someone told the gran “he died from too much coke” and she misinterpreted

Yeah I don’t think she’d have known anything about drugs at all. Agree with a ppe, she would have heard someone say he died from coke and would have assumed cola.

Every French grand-mère will warn you that drinking cold drinks straight from the fridge will kill you stone dead. Ditto going swimming within 48 hours of having eaten. Also, breezes (and by extension air conditioning) are deadly. And taking your scarf off before the end of May, even if it is 30C, will give you heavy legs.

Wowsers! No wonder they kept the recipe such a closely guarded secret.

Maybe someone told her he’d died after ‘taking’ coke, and having perhaps not heard of cocaine, she got the wrong end of the stick.
