Would I be unreasonable to end a friendship over holiday behaviour?

I’m feeling really sad at the moment and could do with some outside perspective. I’m 32 weeks pregnant and trying to keep stress to a minimum before my baby arrives, but I’m struggling with whether I can move past things that have happened with a close friend.

We’ve known each other a few years and talk most days but don’t see each other in person more than twice a year due to distance.
We recently went to Spain together. I’d paid for the accommodation because we’d agreed that she’d cover our lunches and dinners so I assumed it would all equal out. When it came to paying for our first meal, she told me in front of the waiter that she didn’t have any money because of unexpected bills and asked if I could pay instead. I was upset as I’d not actually budgeted really for food outside of ice cream.

I felt really awkward and ended up doing it that first time because I didn’t know what else to do. In the end I said to her outright I can’t pay for us both and she said that we’ll have to get our own then, which we did but she only wanted to go to cheap places then.

She was loudly sexting her new boyfriend while we were sharing the holiday flat, which I found so awkward and told her. She was doing it with the door open so it was so obvious it was for attention.

The thing that’s really stayed with me though is that she told me showed him my baby’s scan picture without asking me first, and then told me they’d laughed and said my daughter looked like she had Down syndrome and looked like an alien. I know people can make silly jokes, but I honestly can’t stop thinking about it. It feels like such a breach of trust, and as her mum I feel incredibly protective of her. I also work with children who are disabled so found the whole Down syndrome thing being used as an insult awful. I’ve also had a high risk terrible pregnancy with multiple admissions so it just seemed extra cruel. Even if they thought that, why tell me? Why share my scan?

We also ended up talking quite a lot about her worries that she’s infertile, despite her saying her periods are normal, her tests have all come back clear and she and her boyfriend aren’t actually trying for a baby and she’s never even had unprotected sex before in her life?? These conversations were 90% of our chats.

I listened because I wanted to support her and tried to when she told me she was thinking of moving abroad with her boyfriend of six months, I gently said I thought it was a good idea to be cautious and have a backup plan as she currently has no savings and is obviously struggling for money. I grinned and beared it for 4 days.

To make things worse, on the way home she let slip she only had “£900” left over for the month which is a lot more than I have (after not paying for me at all as promised). I did send her a message highlighting everything when we got off the plane, felt like I’d explode if I did it in person. Shes been ringing me to apologise, leaving me voice notes and begging me to talk to her. Shes said it’s because she’s worried she’s infertile and she’s sorry, then she’s left me other ones saying I dismissed her relationship so we are even? She also said she’ll send me the money which hasn’t materialised yet. I don’t think I am being unreasonable cutting her off but our other friends have said I am.

Get the money, then block.

WarmHare · 16/07/2026 14:33

Just end the friendship & accept that you won’t be receiving any money from her.

FrenchandSaunders · 16/07/2026 14:35

Wow! She sounds awful OP.

Repeat your request for the money. Say you need it, the agreement was clear, and this isn't fair.
Then block her.
If she doesn't pay you threaten her with the small claims court.

Cheeky twat. This isn't a friend.

BrookeSpirit · 16/07/2026 14:38

This is so awful it's actually chilling. The failure to pay her way as promised is enough reason to ditch her, but the cruel, vindictive DS comment....I can't believe what I just read.

Money back, fade her out. Your life is about to spur off in a totally different direction and I suspect you won't miss her main character energy while you get to grips with motherhood.

Joanne, I paid £xx for the holiday, you then expected me to pay £xx for meals while we were there which wasn't our agreement. I'd appreciate this money back as I couldnt afford it & wouldn't have gone away, had I known it was going to cost me that much.
I'm sorry the holiday worked out the way it did, I was looking forward to enjoying my last few weeks before the baby connecting with good friends, but let's just settle up and move forward'...
And then move forward in the opposite direction.

When your baby arrives she will disappear anyway because you won't have time for this shit and she will frame it as you've become boring or something.
Prepare for her reappearing with a baby & a heap of complications when it hasn't worked with the new man. Up to you if you indulge her at that point.

honeylulu · 16/07/2026 14:56

What an awful woman. What was she like before the holiday because she sounds so rude, selfish and scrounging that it's hard to believe she kept those traits hidden. (Not blaming you at all.)

The money thing alone is bad enough. She literally lied to get free accommodation and then expected free food too, from someone about to go on ML!

Push for the money back. If she pays then block. If she doesn't pay within a week, block anyway. No one needs "friends" like that. Jeering at your baby's scan photo, OMG.

Pistachiocake · 16/07/2026 14:59

I'm usually all for supporting people who are clearly having problems (eg thinking they're infertile, while from what you say, is not actually the case?).

But would you be friends with someone who makes racist/homophobic comments? Her comments are not only ableist, they're personally spiteful.

YorksMa · 16/07/2026 15:01

You won't be ending a friendship because she is NOT your friend. She's a scammer at best, after a free holiday. On top of that, absolutely nobody in their right mind mocks a baby scan photo (or uses Downs Syndrome as an insult to mock babies in general). Tbh, she sounds so vile I wouldn't even bother trying to get the money back. I'd just block and move on.

IslaWhitey · 16/07/2026 15:05

Block her

This is not a “friend”

Minasama · 16/07/2026 15:20

She sounds immature and awful.

She has accepted a free holiday from you and not held up her end of the bargain which was to pay for food - that is really appalling behaviour.

The comment about your baby is unforgivable - I wouldn’t expect that from anyone other than a young teenage boy trying to impress his mates.

Get the money (I doubt very much that you will, but if she doesn’t pay I’d make sure everyone you know knows about it.) Then just see less of her. She has shown you her values and yours do not align.

MrSchubertWhiskers · 16/07/2026 15:21

She owes you money and isn't a friend. Take her to small claims if she won't pay and then end the friendship. Sorry op, it sucks.

purplecorkheart · 16/07/2026 15:23

She is not a friend, she is an awful person. As a previous poster suggests look into the Small Claims Court.

Then block. All the best with the baby - do not allow them to be around such a horrible person.

Mygardenshedisfallingdown · 16/07/2026 15:25

Imagine a good friend of yours wrote this post OP, what would you be saying to her about this person? Would you tell your friend this person is a real friend? If you would then you need to address what friendships actually mean. This holiday 'friend' is NOT a friend in any shape or form.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/07/2026 15:25

Money back and block the bitch. Honestly I just can’t… believe it. But I do.

Mygardenshedisfallingdown · 16/07/2026 15:28

As for your other friends saying yabu they need dumping too, because they aren't real friends if they honestly think holiday woman is right in her behaviour.
Get some new friends.

GoodnightRascal · 16/07/2026 15:33

I agree. I doubt I’ll ever see the money again, I just had to get it off my chest. She’s spun our other friends a massive sob story of no money, infertility etc so I’ve set them straight on what she’s told me. I also have had infertility (actual infertility) but I have not once treated any of my friends like this, and I wouldn’t dream of sharing my “friends” scan photo and making fun of it. It honestly blows my mind.

Make it clear to her you WILL take her to small claims court for the money and she will have to pay the costs too!!!
