Would I be unreasonable to end a friendship over holiday behaviour?

I’m feeling really sad at the moment and could do with some outside perspective. I’m 32 weeks pregnant and trying to keep stress to a minimum before my baby arrives, but I’m struggling with whether I can move past things that have happened with a close friend.

We’ve known each other a few years and talk most days but don’t see each other in person more than twice a year due to distance.
We recently went to Spain together. I’d paid for the accommodation because we’d agreed that she’d cover our lunches and dinners so I assumed it would all equal out. When it came to paying for our first meal, she told me in front of the waiter that she didn’t have any money because of unexpected bills and asked if I could pay instead. I was upset as I’d not actually budgeted really for food outside of ice cream.

I felt really awkward and ended up doing it that first time because I didn’t know what else to do. In the end I said to her outright I can’t pay for us both and she said that we’ll have to get our own then, which we did but she only wanted to go to cheap places then.

She was loudly sexting her new boyfriend while we were sharing the holiday flat, which I found so awkward and told her. She was doing it with the door open so it was so obvious it was for attention.

The thing that’s really stayed with me though is that she told me showed him my baby’s scan picture without asking me first, and then told me they’d laughed and said my daughter looked like she had Down syndrome and looked like an alien. I know people can make silly jokes, but I honestly can’t stop thinking about it. It feels like such a breach of trust, and as her mum I feel incredibly protective of her. I also work with children who are disabled so found the whole Down syndrome thing being used as an insult awful. I’ve also had a high risk terrible pregnancy with multiple admissions so it just seemed extra cruel. Even if they thought that, why tell me? Why share my scan?

We also ended up talking quite a lot about her worries that she’s infertile, despite her saying her periods are normal, her tests have all come back clear and she and her boyfriend aren’t actually trying for a baby and she’s never even had unprotected sex before in her life?? These conversations were 90% of our chats.

I listened because I wanted to support her and tried to when she told me she was thinking of moving abroad with her boyfriend of six months, I gently said I thought it was a good idea to be cautious and have a backup plan as she currently has no savings and is obviously struggling for money. I grinned and beared it for 4 days.

To make things worse, on the way home she let slip she only had “£900” left over for the month which is a lot more than I have (after not paying for me at all as promised). I did send her a message highlighting everything when we got off the plane, felt like I’d explode if I did it in person. Shes been ringing me to apologise, leaving me voice notes and begging me to talk to her. Shes said it’s because she’s worried she’s infertile and she’s sorry, then she’s left me other ones saying I dismissed her relationship so we are even? She also said she’ll send me the money which hasn’t materialised yet. I don’t think I am being unreasonable cutting her off but our other friends have said I am.

I can’t believe you are still referring to this objectionable parasite as a friend in any sense of the word other than ‘ex’

TulipsMakeMeHappy · 16/07/2026 15:57

It depends how much you want to cause upset. I think I'd try a message which postpones the conversation, and potentially means she will drift out of your life once you have a baby and it can't be all about her. "Hi, I'm finding this very stressful at the moment and that is bad for my baby. I'm sure you understand that's my top priority at the moment, and will be for the next few months. Perhaps once the money is in my account, and the baby is a couple of months old I will have the headspace to be back in contact. For now I need some space. Hope all goes well with your move."

As for your other friends saying yabu they need dumping too, because they aren't real friends if they honestly think holiday woman is right in her behaviour.
Get some new friends.

Yes this was my first thought.
How can your friends not see what she's like?

You'd be unreasomable to continue thinking of her as a friend.
She's an attention-seeking user.
Share with her how much you spent on jount costs for the accomodation and meals you paid if she wants to "make things even" and then dump her ass.

ginasevern · 16/07/2026 16:01

@GoodnightRascal Well I wouldn't have gone on holiday with someone I knew that tenuously. You've only known her a few years and met her once or twice a year. Recipe for disaster, as you found out. But obviously you never speak to her again. She's a bitch, a user and a deeply unpleasant human being. It's impossible to see why under any circumstances you'd want to keep her in your life. Unless there's a drip feed coming?

crazeekat · 16/07/2026 16:03

Not a friends get rid of her pronto. Her comments on your baby are unforgivable.

GoodnightRascal · 16/07/2026 16:05

No drip feed. Just a person who is so in their own universe they can’t see outside of it. Just went to check to see if she’d replied to me and noticed I’ve been blocked. Well that’s that then. I’m sort of relived to be honest.

Get the money, then block.

This. She’s awful.

Watermelongum · 16/07/2026 16:15

Honestly? I cannot see that there is a friendship there to end. Just a horrible person who's behaved disgracefully and needs no more headspace. Block and move on.

IronEverything · 16/07/2026 16:20

All of the other information is irrelevant to be honest. Her downs syndrome comment alone is enough to never speak to her again. What a disgraceful person she really is.

BunnyLake · 16/07/2026 16:34

GoodnightRascal · 16/07/2026 15:33

I agree. I doubt I’ll ever see the money again, I just had to get it off my chest. She’s spun our other friends a massive sob story of no money, infertility etc so I’ve set them straight on what she’s told me. I also have had infertility (actual infertility) but I have not once treated any of my friends like this, and I wouldn’t dream of sharing my “friends” scan photo and making fun of it. It honestly blows my mind.

She sounds really hideous. Has she always been a twat or is this something new? I wouldn’t be making contact with her ever again. I hope the rest of your pregnancy is peaceful.

Ilovelifeverymuch · 16/07/2026 16:41

Wow that just got worse and worse the more I read.

She is NOT a friend, and her infertility issues do not justify her actions in any way. I would end the friendship and move on, she is not a good person at all.

If there is a way to get the money owed from her go for it if not you may have to write it off.

ldnmusic87 · 16/07/2026 17:14

I'm sorry OP, she is a user and not your friend.

MistakenFlutterby · 16/07/2026 17:17

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 16/07/2026 14:31

Get the money, then block.

Absolutely this.

Yellowpapersun · 16/07/2026 17:22

Better to have no friend than a "friend' like her. What a horrible person. Ask again for the money she owes you then just ignore her. You'll make new friends who'll treat you as you deserve to be treated.

Nofeckingway · 16/07/2026 17:22

The baby scan thing was enough for me . Never mind the money . I wouldn't want anything to do with such a shitty person . You need to raise your standards and have friends that won't steal money from you or be so moronic and disablaist

MyDailyCake · 16/07/2026 17:24

YANBU

Fiendishandfiery · 16/07/2026 17:26

She’s jeakous you’re pregnant. That’s what this is. She’s behaved appallingly and treated you like shit. It’s fine she’s blocked you there is no way back and as a final kick she’s not going to give you your money.

LadyLucksalot · 16/07/2026 17:43

Wow. I can't believe I read this. I can't understand people like this. What the actual heck is wrong with people?

I'd be tempted to take her to small claims and get back exactly what you spent on the accommodation. At the very least. Those comments she made - it's actually unhinged. Make sure your friends know exactly what kind of a person she is.

I'm so sorry you've gone through this OP.

Good luck to you. Best of luck with your beautiful baby. I wish you nothing but good things from this point onwards.

NewGoldFox · 17/07/2026 18:12

First reply nails it.

She sounds grim, is she really someone you want in your and your child's life?

BrookeSpirit · 16/07/2026 14:38

This is so awful it's actually chilling. The failure to pay her way as promised is enough reason to ditch her, but the cruel, vindictive DS comment....I can't believe what I just read.

Absolutely awful. 🥲

FictionalCharacter · 17/07/2026 18:48

OK so she’s blocked you now, but don’t let her keep your money. Send her a formally written letter by recorded delivery, setting out exactly what you spent that she owes you, and a time frame for repayment. You both know that she can afford it. I bet she’s done this to other people and the more she gets away with it, the more likely she is to scam others in future. She set you up to pay for her whole holiday.

There’s something very wrong with someone who seeks sympathy for infertility when she has no idea whether she actually is infertile, isn’t trying for a baby and has never had unprotected sex. It’s either bizarre attention-seeking or a way to make you feel sorry for her, softening you up to let her cheat you out of money.

ButtercupYellow26 · 17/07/2026 18:53

She sounds a really horrible and spiteful person.
She may have been a friend once but she isn't now.
I would have a solicitors letter sent to her, but would never see or speak to her again.

TFImBackIn · 17/07/2026 18:59

She's a disgusting woman.

I'd send her a message saying that unless she pays you the amount she owes within 48 hours (and tell her when that actually is) then you will contact the small claims court. You will win that case - it's a brilliant way of getting money back.
