Would I be unreasonable to end a friendship over holiday behaviour?

I’m feeling really sad at the moment and could do with some outside perspective. I’m 32 weeks pregnant and trying to keep stress to a minimum before my baby arrives, but I’m struggling with whether I can move past things that have happened with a close friend.

We’ve known each other a few years and talk most days but don’t see each other in person more than twice a year due to distance.
We recently went to Spain together. I’d paid for the accommodation because we’d agreed that she’d cover our lunches and dinners so I assumed it would all equal out. When it came to paying for our first meal, she told me in front of the waiter that she didn’t have any money because of unexpected bills and asked if I could pay instead. I was upset as I’d not actually budgeted really for food outside of ice cream.

I felt really awkward and ended up doing it that first time because I didn’t know what else to do. In the end I said to her outright I can’t pay for us both and she said that we’ll have to get our own then, which we did but she only wanted to go to cheap places then.

She was loudly sexting her new boyfriend while we were sharing the holiday flat, which I found so awkward and told her. She was doing it with the door open so it was so obvious it was for attention.

The thing that’s really stayed with me though is that she told me showed him my baby’s scan picture without asking me first, and then told me they’d laughed and said my daughter looked like she had Down syndrome and looked like an alien. I know people can make silly jokes, but I honestly can’t stop thinking about it. It feels like such a breach of trust, and as her mum I feel incredibly protective of her. I also work with children who are disabled so found the whole Down syndrome thing being used as an insult awful. I’ve also had a high risk terrible pregnancy with multiple admissions so it just seemed extra cruel. Even if they thought that, why tell me? Why share my scan?

We also ended up talking quite a lot about her worries that she’s infertile, despite her saying her periods are normal, her tests have all come back clear and she and her boyfriend aren’t actually trying for a baby and she’s never even had unprotected sex before in her life?? These conversations were 90% of our chats.

I listened because I wanted to support her and tried to when she told me she was thinking of moving abroad with her boyfriend of six months, I gently said I thought it was a good idea to be cautious and have a backup plan as she currently has no savings and is obviously struggling for money. I grinned and beared it for 4 days.

To make things worse, on the way home she let slip she only had “£900” left over for the month which is a lot more than I have (after not paying for me at all as promised). I did send her a message highlighting everything when we got off the plane, felt like I’d explode if I did it in person. Shes been ringing me to apologise, leaving me voice notes and begging me to talk to her. Shes said it’s because she’s worried she’s infertile and she’s sorry, then she’s left me other ones saying I dismissed her relationship so we are even? She also said she’ll send me the money which hasn’t materialised yet. I don’t think I am being unreasonable cutting her off but our other friends have said I am.

OP, as she has now blocked you, as long as you have texts/emails stating the agreement for her to pay for the food if you paid for the accommodation, just take her to small claims. The friendship is over so you may as well get your money.

Laura95167 · 17/07/2026 20:49

Shes a user. And a pig.

Get your money then move on

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/07/2026 21:25

Besides being a freeloader, she sounds really horrible. You honestly don’t need ‘friends’ like that!

This woman is not your friend and is horrible.
She sounds envious of you, your life and your baby.
I wouldn’t want her in my life or anywhere near my baby - she is a nasty piece of work.

Dumbledora8 · 17/07/2026 21:37

This woman is a repulsive scum bag. She actually sounds abit thick

VoltaireMittyDream · 17/07/2026 21:41

She’s a sloppy mess of a person, with a nasty streak. Get rid.

Parcelpass · 17/07/2026 22:00

WarmHare · 16/07/2026 14:33

Just end the friendship & accept that you won’t be receiving any money from her.

This the end. Do not offer to pay for a holiday for a friend again.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/07/2026 23:05

Oh ffs, serve her with a small claims action to recoup your money.

Calmdownfolks · 18/07/2026 00:44

What a horrible cow. As others have said, she should pay for half the costs of booking the holiday plus any further costs during the holiday. Her remarks were awful and completely unwarranted. A very selfish and ignorant person. Do take her to the small claims court and good luck.

Duckagogo · 18/07/2026 00:47

First response nailed it.

She doesn't even like you. Don't let her anywhere near your life apart from taking her to small claims court.

Bunny65 · 18/07/2026 01:14

You need new friends, she sounds ghastly. Hopefully you’ll meet some nice mum friends soon. The attention-seeking sounds off the scale. She’s worried about infertility before trying to get pregnant? And sharing your scan was inexcusable.

Ocelotfeet27 · 18/07/2026 03:05

Nasty selfish bitch. You're better off without her. But I would definitely be telling your friends how much she owes you (ie half of accommodation) and get them to push her on it. Even if they only get a small amount back.

I'm sure this is a lesson learned but never ever pay for anyone else on the assumption they will pay you back. More often than you'd think people don't. There's a reason why they don't have the money to pay in the first place.

IntelCoreStrength · 18/07/2026 04:30

Her behaviour was utterly horrifying. The fact that she’s got in with her story first to your friends shows how manipulative she is. I don’t think you’re going to get your money back without further action, unfortunately. If you don’t feel like you can go down the legal path (and that’s understandable), try and look on it as an unfortunately expensive way to find out what sort of person she really is before you wasted any more time on her. And your friends want you to let it go because they don’t want to have to deal with the conflict / division is the group - don’t listen to that.

Whatatodo79 · 18/07/2026 04:36

You need new better friends op. Are you going to any antenatal classes? Book up into some new baby classes like baby massage or whatever so you can meet up with new mums when your lovely baby comes. They get booked up quickly here so worth looking now

Londog · 18/07/2026 05:12

Immerse yourself in this wonderful, much dreamed of pregnancy ❤️ that’s all that matters - please don’t let this arrogant idiot spoil your longed for joy
You’ve had a lucky escape from this person, before your new chapter as a new mum starts .
All the very best , you’ll be a lovely mumxxx

hattie43 · 18/07/2026 06:55

I cannot believe you agreed to an arrangement where you paid the accommodation in return for meals . Even without any fallout you’re open to different interpretations of what ‘ meals ‘ actually are . Some people only want fruit for lunch , eat in cheap places , set meal only etc . That aside your friend is awful and id wait for your money back and fade her out . It seems very reasonable that when baby arrives you won’t have time for her .

Chocolattecoffeecup · 18/07/2026 07:09

How much are you out of pocket?

she sounds awful

IsawwhatIsaw · 18/07/2026 08:26

She’s blocked you so guess that’s it anyway.
move on - don’t waste your time with someone like this.

MagicThanks · 18/07/2026 08:40

Any one of those things would be enough for me to back away. Do press her for the money - give a total amount - a PP put a perfect message to send. But then just quietly back away, avoid drama then your others friends don’t get to have an opinion on it. “Let’s move on” - then move on in the opposite direction.

pouletvous · 18/07/2026 09:00

What!? How is this even a question?

she has behaved outrageously

remove this awful person from your life

i can’t believe you are even asking opinions on this

Justbreathagain · 18/07/2026 09:21

I personally would not bother with small claims court. Unless your really at rock bottom. It will just drag the whole thing out. I would say your mental health is worth more to end this whole thing here. Grieve for the friend you thought you had and that's ok. Then when your ready get out with your new baby and meet some lovely new mum friends x good luck with the baby. Try not to give her any more head space. She can take your money, ruin your holiday and make fun of your scan or she can do all that and also take your headspace while your heavily pregnant. Leave this at the door.xxx

Duvetdayneeded · 18/07/2026 09:23

Send her message now saying please can she send you £x or if easier if she can give it to you in 2instalments. Then block this piss taking bitch.

Snippit · 18/07/2026 09:41

What a vile woman she is, certainly not a friend I’d want. I’m at an age now (59) that if someone is a drain I don’t entertain them in my life. So far that includes the MIL and SIL, I don’t need their shit in my life so they’ve been sent to Coventry and blocked. I really don’t care what anyone thinks, I feel so much better for it. Just move on and mark it down to a bad experience, you’ll be very busy soon when your beautiful baby is here, 🤗

Nousernameideaaga · 18/07/2026 09:45

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 16/07/2026 14:31

Get the money, then block.

This

She is not your friend

ETA For this level of awfulness I would be prepared to sacrifice the money spent in order to get back to peace.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 18/07/2026 09:46

FictionalCharacter · 17/07/2026 18:48

OK so she’s blocked you now, but don’t let her keep your money. Send her a formally written letter by recorded delivery, setting out exactly what you spent that she owes you, and a time frame for repayment. You both know that she can afford it. I bet she’s done this to other people and the more she gets away with it, the more likely she is to scam others in future. She set you up to pay for her whole holiday.

There’s something very wrong with someone who seeks sympathy for infertility when she has no idea whether she actually is infertile, isn’t trying for a baby and has never had unprotected sex. It’s either bizarre attention-seeking or a way to make you feel sorry for her, softening you up to let her cheat you out of money.

This. I would not let her get away with this.
