If England did win the world cup

I appreciate there is a little way to go and this is all very hypothetical but if England do win and they do decide to declare a bank holiday what happens to elective surgeries?

I have an anxious relative who has been waiting a long time for surgery, they are in a lot of pain and currently they have a date of Friday 24th July. Trying to support their anxiety as they are so desperate for the surgery to go ahead.

I have heard the rumour that IF we won the 24th July would be the bank holiday, would that mean the NHS would cancel and re arrange any elective surgeries that day?

Appreciate it’s all out of our control but interested
to see if a last minute announced bank holiday would lead to cancellations

That’s the point - why is a sports match important enough to bring the country to a halt?

Looks like it would be the patriotic thing for the England team to do, would be to lose.

Winning seems to cause too many problems.

The men also won the cricket world cup a few years back.

What's so special that this country gets a bank holiday? Get real. It's a football game. Shall we close all GP surgeries for an over paid game?. Enjoy it by all means but don't be silly.

It’s not about interest. I know nothing about heptathlons, however I know Jessica Ennis won a gold medal in the Olympics in 2012. It’s about celebrating or even acknowledging a country’s achievements.

It’s not. That’s my point, the women’s rugby won the World Cup and didn’t get gifted a BH. We can celebrate a country’s achievements without needed a BH.

I agree. I'd be over the moon if England won, but I don't think we need a bank holiday for it.

Also, plenty of people work on bank holidays, including people in care homes, hospitals etc. Might be worth the OP ringing the hospital and asking them what procedures happen on a bank holiday.

It’s not ‘a country’s’ achievements though. It’s the result of a football match played by 11 people from each country. Not sure how the whole country gets to take credit

It is silly but Scotland got a bh just for taking part.

Hospitals will not close but GP surgeries will. If a BH is called next Friday that also means no public transport because our bus company will certainly take it. We will actually already be without public transport for three days because Essex Highways are resurfacing our road so no buses for three days This will mean a fourth day if this BH happens so most of the week with no public transport.

Will there be a BH in Scotland, or will the Anglophobes be expected to go to work?

Well give the bank holiday to Scotland and leave England alone - simple!

But they should get a different day off instead legally.

That is appalling - so the waiting lists get longer even for elective surgery because Scotland qualified?

I work for McDonald's. We'll still be open or where would people take their kids? We're always packed on bank holidays.

I was wondering if the same in lieu rules apply as I don't work a Friday. Hoping it will just be added to my holiday allowance.

1am the day before though, ludicrous!.

I bloody hope there's no BH next Friday. It's ridiculously late to call one. Lots of us will have meetings etc scheduled which will be a nightmare to rearrange.

ETA Argentina have just equalised so it's looking less likely anyway!

Many places will not close. My friend had her MOT for her car on the day after a cup final several years ago (booked 3 weeks in advance,) and there was talk about a bank holiday on the day her MOT was booked for...

The mechanic/garage said they would still be open if England win, even if a bank holiday is announced.. They said they have far too much work on to just close for the day. It will very likely just be offices, (and not even all of them,) and some shops. Possibly a few schools. It's very unlikely that medical appointments, planned surgeries, and medical procedures will be cancelled.

Public transport wouldnt run here It never does on a bank holiday We dont even get one on a Sunday. Taxis will be on time and a half if ppl need to use them to get to those appointments. Starmer has proved he is just another out of touch politician

No-one is closing for a bank holiday now anyway. England are out.
