If England did win the world cup

I appreciate there is a little way to go and this is all very hypothetical but if England do win and they do decide to declare a bank holiday what happens to elective surgeries?

I have an anxious relative who has been waiting a long time for surgery, they are in a lot of pain and currently they have a date of Friday 24th July. Trying to support their anxiety as they are so desperate for the surgery to go ahead.

I have heard the rumour that IF we won the 24th July would be the bank holiday, would that mean the NHS would cancel and re arrange any elective surgeries that day?

Appreciate it’s all out of our control but interested
to see if a last minute announced bank holiday would lead to cancellations

Thanks in advance.

In the UK bank holidays are usually on a Monday.

Good comment but this one would be on a Friday.

Don't know OP, you would hope they'd still go ahead but might just have to wait and see

Thanks all, I appreciate no one knows I was just trying to wrack my brain this morning to see if a similar situations happened before and what happened then.

If they did cancel all surgeries that day it feels like a huge task to re schedule them all but also everyone is entitled to the bank holiday . I will try to re assure my relative that we can’t worry about it at the moment .

When Scotland had their "world cup" bank holiday , people were working my Dh and Dds were all at work, i had a Dr's appointment.i dont think the NHS will come to a standstill because of a win.

I appreciate our BH was just because we got there 😀

Icantbebothered · 15/07/2026 08:33

I genuinely think that you have nothing to worry about, there is no way that England will win the world cup!

Saying that, I can understand your relatives concern.

Everyone isn’t entitled to the bank holiday at all. Many people work bank holidays for no extra pay.

Icantbebothered · 15/07/2026 08:35

I do thi k it would most likely be a case of NHS services continue as scheduled, and staff potentially get a days holiday in lieu or get paid bank holiday rates?

This personally my Dc have jobs that they don't get bank holidays, they are just added on to their annual leave allowance.

Apologies what I should have said those entitled to the bank holiday . Aware lots of workers don’t get bank holidays

There’s zero chance they’ll win, so stop worrying. 😂😂

Viviennemary · 15/07/2026 08:42

We'll never hear the end of it for 60 years. They've still not got over winning in was it 1966.

Obviously football upsets happen but England is the lowest rated of the three teams left in the competition. Overcoming Argentina and Spain would be quite a result.

But AI says elective surgeries would likely be postponed.
“NHS Impact: During national bank holidays, the NHS typically shifts to a "Sunday service" model. This results in reduced routine procedures and means that some non-urgent outpatient appointments and elective surgeries would likely be delayed or cancelled. However, emergency and essential medical services would continue to operate.”

Your relative sadly needs to wait and see.

Out of the eight uk bank holidays, only four are fixed on a Monday.

Pointyleaf · 15/07/2026 08:45

Why is everyone so convinced they won't win?

Argentina are not what Argentina were, we shoukd win tonight. Then, I agree Spain are a much tougher prospect but it's all down to what happens on the night. Before last night everyone thought France were the standout side of the competition.

Personally I think the BH is ridiculous, and surely the NHS won't shut?

KitsyWitsy · 15/07/2026 08:48

I think all you can do is wait and see what happens. It's not impossible that they will win but it's very unlikely.

The bookies have England as favourites to beat Argentina.
Spain are obviously very good but France just didn't show up last night and the first and crucial goal they conceded was a bit of a freak

I agree I think we have a chance but I’m trying not to show that,

It gives me hope that Scotland gave leave in lieu and the NhS stayed operational.

AI also told me to expect the surgeries to be cancelled so I guess we wait and see

DH had a knee operation on a bank holiday because there was a timescale for recovery that had to be kept to.
Your relative's wouldn't necessarily be cancelled.

Is it really likely we will have a bank holiday for a sports tournament? The only short notice bank holiday I can think of was the Queen’s death which was a big deal for the state. But maybe there have been others I can’t remember

HelpMeGetThrough · 15/07/2026 08:54

There won’t be one. The only thing that’s “coming home” is the team, empty handed.

I think Kier has alluded to it being something he will deliver on. He dosent have much to lose after all.

I've had an appointment with my consultant on Easter Bank Holiday Monday! So I reckon the whole NHS doesn't grind to a halt.

Yes, if we win there will be a BH. The PM has committed to that. I like him and think Labour have messed up by forcing him out, but god knows why he agreed to that.
