Farage is being excoriated for claiming to be the most attacked politician of our times – erasing the existence of two serving MPs who were actually murdered.
He is also being excoriated for apparently breaking the ministerial code by trying to keep the £5 million donation secret. There's no reason he couldn't just have declared it.
If he'd declared it and said it was for security, people would have been actively sympathetic.
Instead he's created this circus around it.
And now it's come out that he actively turned down an offer for a state-funded bodyguard and driver last year.

If he'd said he wanted to arrange his own additional private security on top, again most people would have been actively sympathetic. It's a lot harder to understand why he'd reject a state-funded bodyguard outright.
