To think we aren't outliers ?

Im 5 foot 3. DS is 9 and 131cm. Surely we aren't outliers height wise ? People feel the need to tell us we're tiny constantly. A little odd no?

I wouldn't call 5ft 3 tiny.

emuloc · 07/07/2026 12:47

I am not even that tall. No one says anything about it though.

Brownwithnopezazz · 07/07/2026 12:47

People? Surely just tall people? Isn’t the average height of a woman in the UK 5foot4?

MageKing · 07/07/2026 12:47

I wouldn't call 5ft 3 tiny, but it's definitely short. I'm 5ft 4 and I'd consider myself to be at the bottom end of average.

9 and 131 cm doesn't feel tiny, but possibly also on the shorter side although I lose track. dd is average and at 11 is 145cm.

DameOfThrones · 07/07/2026 12:49

What people are these?

I'm 5ft 3" and have been for over 40 years.

No-one has ever called me 'tiny'.

CurdinHenry · 07/07/2026 12:49

It really annoys me when people who are five three go on about how wee they are. Oh I'm only wee oh I'm a fairy me oh I could fit in a pocket and a thimble of soup is enough for me!

I don't believe anyone else comments on it cos you're not little. You're bang average.

People like who. I'm 5'9 . My mum was 5' 3. I don't remember anyone saying she was "tiny". I get comments for being tall(ish), but never heard comments about my mum being "tiny"...

Right!

emuloc · 07/07/2026 12:53

Oh I just remembered that I was called dinky once. Other than that, no other remarks about my lack of height!

MiddleAgedDread · 07/07/2026 12:55

not a clue unless you use the same units of measurement!!
Also, they're 9.....tall kids don't necessarily grow into tall adults and vice versa.

I know ! I saw this reel on Instagram about this lady who is 5 foot 9 saying women when youre 5 foot 3 stop saying you are teeny tiny

OP posts:
EmpressaurusKitty · 07/07/2026 12:58

Huh. I’m 4ft 11.

If someone tells you you’re tiny, you’re fully justified in making a personal remark about them in return.

InsertUsernameHere · 07/07/2026 12:59

The comments could be more related to your frame, and your son’s maturity than height. 131 is about 50th percentile for age 9, vs 15th percentile age 10. Does he have slightly older/taller friends? Comments about size are often done in comparison (being short myself (5’1”) and having a late growing DS) sometimes people just grab on to something to say.. (stick to the weather people!)

RaininSummer · 07/07/2026 12:59

Not tiny but short. I'm 5 foot two. If you other family and friends are taller than average then they will see you as pretty small.

Traleetrala I sit on a leaf instead of a chair

Pootles34 · 07/07/2026 13:03

I'm similar - 5ft 2 and people definitely comment. Some tall people seem to see it as an achievement to be tall?!

RaininSummer · 07/07/2026 13:03

I'm definitely not teeny tiny as you can be short but also very overweight. I have never heard anyone talking about being tiny and not able to eat more than a thimblefull of food.

Yogafiend · 07/07/2026 13:05

I’m 5ft2 and husband is 6ft4. When it’s the case that people met me first and then see my husband they always comment on how tall he is. I always assume it’s because they didn’t picture me with such a tall person. But I don’t get upset. I’m the smallest of my family on both sides. Even my niece is taller 😊. Who cares. Great things come in small packages. At least that’s what I tell myself anyway 😂

sanityisamyth · 07/07/2026 13:06

My DS12 calls me “shorty”. He’s 1/2” taller than me. I’m 5’7”. I’m not short. I dread to think how tall he will end up! My mother is 5’3”. I’d say she’s short but not extremely so.

No doubt some do. Just as many short people bang on about how "tiny" they are. While at the same time asking tall people to get things off the top shelves at supermarkets for them...

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 07/07/2026 13:15

I am 5' 4" which is the average height of a 50 yo woman. I am constantly called "tiny", it is bizarre. A man said I was "small like a child" on Sunday, which is absurd and I said this. I have a small framed body and it somehow confuses people. It is very odd, I am not small.

Edited to add DH is 6' 5" and both DC 6' ish which adds to the persepective.

Mariets · 07/07/2026 13:16

I know how you feel OP. I'm 5'4" and while that's not tiny, my sister is 5'8" and my three brothers are over six foot. My kids also tower over me and my granddaughter too.
They often make jokes that my mum must have had a fling with someone. They think they're being funny but I find it irritating as you don't choose what you're going to look like.

Mosaic80 · 07/07/2026 13:17

I’m 5’3” and consider myself shorter than average but not excessively so that I’d expect comments nor have I ever really had any comments.

Apart from a friend who I was saying to that I had really big feet and was quite tall for my age when I was around 10 and people (mostly family) expected me to be tall but I just stopped growing at 11. I just left it there and she sort of finished my sentence “… oh… and everyone was so disappointed…” 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣🤣.

eta in general I think it’s rude to comment in height/size/weight at all really! You never know how someone feels about it even if you’re complimenting someone by saying they’re slim or tall or whatever.
