What hair/eye colour do your children have with very different-looking parents?

DH and I are expecting our first child and I have always wondered what our child’s colouring will be. I have blue eyes, light blonde hair and fair skin. My mum’s colouring is the same as mine, my dad has light brown hair and grey eyes. My DH has black hair, brown eyes and olive skin. His mum had dark brown hair with hazel eyes and his dad has same colours as DH. I’m so curious I find genetics fascinating!

So my question is, just for fun, do any of you have child(ren) with a partner with completely different colouring to you and did your child take after one parent more than the other?

I'm blue eyed, dark blonde, fair skin. My husband has black hair, green eyes and olive skin.

My genes absolutely dominated. My son is the spitting image of me. He only has my husband's fingernails and the same shaped toes, plus his asthma.

HearMeSnore · 05/07/2026 20:08

DH is very light blond and I have very dark, almost black hair. We both have blue eyes.

When DD was born she looked like a clone of me, with a full head of dark hair just like I had when I was a baby. By the time she turned 2 it had all gone blonde and people started commenting on how she looked just like her dad.

Gorbie · 05/07/2026 20:09

I'm fair skin, blue eyes and light brown hair. My husband slightly darker skin, dark brown hair, brown eyes
1 child is mousy brown hair, brown eyes. 2nd child dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, 3rd child dark blonde hair, grey/blue eyes. All kids tan really easy and go almost a nut brown colour after their dad

Notabarbie · 05/07/2026 20:14

Paternal grandparents: Brown eyes, red hair. Blue eyes, curly blonde hair

Dad: Curly auburn hair, (amber) hazel eyes

Maternal grandparents: Brown eyes, brown hair. Blue eyes, brown hair

Mum: Brown hair, green hazel eyes

Child: Curly brown hair and (green) hazel eyes

Love genetics! Mine have the same face but one’s olive skinned, the other very fair. DC1 was the spit of me as a child when they were a toddler, DC2 looks more like me now. My niece is a mini me, and looks nothing like SIL.

MargaretThursday · 05/07/2026 20:38

Dd1 is a mixture of me and dh in both looks and personality.
Dd2 is spit of my family (not me) but my bro, uncle, cousin, 2nd cousin, grandad etc in looks, and me in personality.
Ds is dh most of the way in looks, but not like him in personality. I think he's most similar to my dad (and I'm not like my dad, although my siblings are!)

It's interesting.

Edited to add: Of mine and dh's siblings we have one family on each side that if we took out with our own, no one thought anything other than they were all siblings. The other siblings are nothing like and no one thought they were related at all.

Didimum · 05/07/2026 20:42

More likely the colouring of your DH since those are dominant genetic traits.

I have wavy dark brown hair, dark brown eyes and olive skin, my DH has straight fair brown hair, blue eyes and very fair skin.

I have non-identical twins –
Twin 1 - fair brown wavy hair, light brown eyes, olive skin
Twin 2 - fair brown straight hair, dark brown eyes, very pale skin

Scaryspicer · 05/07/2026 20:44

Dc1: pale skin, dark brown hair, dark brown eyes
dc2: olive toned pale skin, gold hair, dark brown eyes (very gold tonal)
dc3: pale skin, blonde hair, bright blue eyes.

Me, pale, mousy hair- dark in winter, gold in summer, dark eyes
dh- pale olive tone, dark blond hair, grey eyes

I have mousy hair blue eyes and pale skin
our daughter has mousy hair and blue eyes and olive skin ish
my partner has black hair brown eyes and olive skin. Shes a mini me with his skin tone to be honest 😂

My husband has brown hair and brown eyes, while I have blonde hair and blue eyes. We’re both white. My son is the same as me (my FIL has blue eyes so my husband must have had the gene to pass on). He does have very curly hair though, which could be from me but is probably from my husband.

leanbhnua · 05/07/2026 21:36

An answer to sort of the opposite of your question but both my husband and I have dark brown hair and brown eyes, and ended up with a fair haired blue eyed child to our surprise! We do both have blonde hair and blue eyes in our wider families though. Genetics are weird.

Elfie23 · 05/07/2026 21:57

I have dark hair and green eyes. Ex has auburn hair and pale blue eyes.
DD has green eyes (started off bright blue as a baby) and dark blonde ‘wet sand’ sort of colour hair which is getting darker as she gets older.

To throw in the mix my parents both have blue eyes. Mum light brown hair and dad very dark almost black hair.

Sister - Green eyes mid brown hair
Brother - blonde hair (white blonde as a child) blue eyes
Me- Dark brown hair and green eyes.

Sister and I must have got the green eyes from my dad’s mum as she’s the only other relative with green eyes!

ladygindiva · 05/07/2026 23:32

I have black hair, light olive skin, brownish eyes. Had twins with a bluey green eyed ginger. One has whiter than white freckly skin ( dad) and black hair ( me) and greeny blue eyes, the other has reddish brown hair, light olive skin and dark brown eyes. A fascinating combo

PinkNailPolish2026 · 05/07/2026 23:39

I have brown eyes, blonde hair and olive skin. DH has blue eyes, olive skin and red hair.

Child 1 has green eyes and red hair - fair skin
Child 2 has green eyes and dark brown hair - fair skin
Child 3 has blue eyes and red hair - fair skin
Child 4 has hazel/green eyes and red hair - fair skin

I sometimes wonder how the hell their genetics worked.

YerMasYerDa · 05/07/2026 23:46

DP and I have similar colouring apart from our eyes. His are brown and mine are dark grey. Both DC got my eyes. DS1’s are pretty much identical to mine. DS2’s have slightly more blue. Not a trace of DP’s brown eyes. For some reason I was convinced our children would have brown eyes. DS1 also got my black hair. DS2 was blond (which was a novelty in our two dark haired families) until he was about 9 and now has DP’s dark brown hair.

Green eyes and red hair

I just had to have a Google as most of my dads side in Tipperary have the same
heres the Google responce 😀

Red hair and green eyes are two of the rarest genetic traits globally, each resulting from recessive genes that limit melanin production. While the exact combination is uncommon, both traits often co-occur in the same individuals because they are highly concentrated within the same geographic gene pools. 1, 2, 3]
The genetics behind these distinct features involve some fascinating biology:
Red Hair Genetics: Red hair is caused by mutations in the MC1R gene, located on chromosome 16. This mutation triggers the body to produce high levels of pheomelanin (red/yellow pigment) and low levels of eumelanin (black/brown pigment). Because it is a recessive trait, an individual must inherit a mutated MC1R gene from both parents to have red hair. 1, 2, 3]
Green Eye Genetics: Eye color is a complex, polygenic trait primarily controlled by genes like OCA2 and HERC2, which determine how much melanin is present in the iris. Green eyes are the result of a low concentration of melanin, causing a light scattering of blue light combined with a touch of yellow-brown pigment (pheomelanin). 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
The Rarity and the Link: The combination of red hair and green eyes is very uncommon, though green eyes are actually more common among redheads than blue eyes. Historically, researchers debated if the genes for hair and eye color were directly linked. However, modern genetic studies indicate that the frequent co-occurrence of these traits is largely due to population stratification. Both mutations originated and became highly concentrated in specific, isolated populations in Northern Europe and the Celtic regions, which causes them to travel together within the same families

Of note
My and my sons hazel eyes turned bright green by the time we hit our early 20s

Nat6999 · 06/07/2026 00:06

Both me & exh are dark hair & blue eyes, ds has blonde hair that goes white blonde in summer with blue eyes, I joke he must be the milkman's.

Any1ForTennis · 06/07/2026 00:15

My family genes seem to go a bit diagonally E g, I take after the paternal side but look like my Aunt not my Dad.

My niece also takes after the same line as me, looks like me and nothing like either of her parents.

Sadly all 3 of us have been 'blessed' with thicker, frizz prone dark hair which starts going grey in late 20's.

So, when you're trying to work it out, you also need to look to siblings and aunt/uncles 😀.

Indaloo · 06/07/2026 00:26

DH Ashkenazi Jew genes. Tans quickly, black hair, very dark brown eyes
Me: Scottish skin (super pale), dark blue eyes, dark hair (eyebrows and eyelashes black) but lightens very quickly so my main hair is dark blonde/ mouse brown depending on season.

DS: my hair colour, DH skin tone. Jet black eyes (darker than DH).
DD: my hair colour, my skin tone, blue eyes (lighter than mine).

TypicalBlue · 06/07/2026 00:28

DH has black hair, brown eyes and very olive skin. I am very pale with light brown hair and green eyes. Our DS looks very similar to DH with brown eyes, black hair and olive skin. He does have the shape of my eyes and similar lips though!

ELDV · 06/07/2026 00:47

I have blonde straight hair, blue eyes, pale skin
husband is mediterranean with dark curly hair and brown eyes:
Child 1: all my colouring so blue eyes and blonde hair but dad’s face structure
child 2: Born with dark straight hair and brown eyes, golden skin. Hair has gone blonde over years. My bone structure.
child 3: Brown eyes and blonde curly hair.
I love that mine are all different

FairKoala · 06/07/2026 05:02

Should add dd is a lot taller than both myself and her father and ds is an inch taller than his sister

Neither mine or their fathers side have any relatives that could be considered tall by any stretch of the imagination.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 06/07/2026 05:17

I have hazel colouring, skin which tans easily and DH is very fair, freckly, sandy haired. We are both tall but not very tall (5'7" and 5'11"). DD1 is more like me in colouring, but more slender and 5'4". DD2 is almost as tall as DH and fair, blue eyes like him, freckly skin with but light brown hair naturally, close to mine in colour. People almost never think they are siblings due to the height and colouring difference but in fact facially they are quite similar.

I have mid-brown hair with red undertones, pale, very freckled skin, and green/blue hazel eyes. My DH has black hair, light brown skin, and brown eyes.

Our two children both have olive skin that tans darkly and very dark brown hair - but DS has my DH's brown eyes (including his perfect eyesight) and no freckles, while DD has my green/blue hazel eyes (and my very bad myopia) and a tendency to freckle.

Posywosey · 06/07/2026 05:51

I am very pale and white blonde with blue grey eyes. DH has dark brown- almost black- hair and brown eyes. He tans well. DD has brown eyes and dirty blonde hair and tans well. Looks like me, though.

We are both on the taller end (5'8" and 6'0") bu5 not ridiculously so, but DD is v tall and skinny.
