Worried about overactive thyroid despite thyroxine dose changes

Very worried as ive been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. My thyroid has been u der and made stable with thyroxine but it's now overactive and the dose of thyroxine was changed and it's still overactive so they have changed it again and in 6 weeks I will have another blood test to see what's what. I. So worried as this can lead to heart failure. I am having palpitations and lkst weight and have fatigue. Ive never been so worried I can't eat or sleep due to the worry.

I have an underactive thyroid as well as it is really normal for it to take quite a few months, and quite a few blood tests, for them to get the correct dosage. Do you think the palpitations and fatigue and weight loss are caused by the stress? Ask for the actual blood test results, it's likely that it isn't over by a huge amount.

OneStarAwake · 03/07/2026 17:43

This happened to me. Try not to worry. If it was so overactive that it could be potentially harmful I am sure they would have stopped the thyroxine completely rather than alter the dose. But if you are worried discuss with GP.

Not caused by stress. They are side effects if overactive thyroie

I was told it have too much thyroxine causing mt thyroud to ve too high. My glands are not swollen which happens when you have an enlarged thyroid. Ive been told to take it easy told I get a blood test showing my thyroid is stable

When i googled it said a thyroid that is too high is the same as an overactive thyroid and ive veen told my thyroid is too high so I must have an overactive thyroid

Yes, I was on too high a dose and I went from under to overactive. Once the right dose was established all was fine.I am sure it will be the same for you.

Reinventedblanket · 03/07/2026 20:01

It sounds like you have been over treated on thyroxine. Needs can change over time. Reducing the dose will hopefully bring your thyroid back into a normal range and your symptoms of being overactive will stop. It isn't unusual for dosages to need to be increased or decreased at different points in treatment so I wouldn't worry too much.

babyno2isdue · 03/07/2026 20:01

I had uncontrollable overactive thyroid for 2 years discovered during pregnancy and closely monitored. When it was discovered my levels were so hugh they was surprised I hadn’t noticed feeling unwell, following birth I was told to expect levels to be hard to manage while everything settled unfortunately the never did doses up and down every 6-12 weeks eventually ended up with a total removal of my thyroid due to being unable to control with medication. They did offer me radiation however I had very young g children and couldn’t be away from them for that long.

what I’m getting at is you are being monitored if they were concerned it was life threatening they would be doing something more drastic mine was all over for 2 years before they were concerned enough and even then there were still less drastic options. I understand the feeling people joke it must be lovely having overactive thyroid being able to loose weight easy ect but I know from experience how stressful and worrying the symptoms can be. Just keep taking the dose they have suggested and see in 6 weeks you may be surprised.

good news is I now technically have under active thyroid (even though I don’t have one) and it’s been a lot easier to control

Peggly · 03/07/2026 20:06

I know it’s easy to say but please try not to worry, it’s great you’re being monitored and adjusting your dose will eventually get it to a normal level, but it is a process. My thyroid is overactive and I take medication to reduce it. Feeling really anxious, and on edge is a symptom as your body is slighlty in overdrive. It will improve once your levels get better but that will take a bit of time. have you spoken to your doctor/consultant about the anxiety symptoms? I know for people being treated with overactive thyroid sometimes they prescribe medication to help with these symptoms. The British Thyroid Association has some really helpful advice.

Arlanymor · 03/07/2026 20:11

Kindly - the health service are doing everything they can for you. Your anxiety is something you need to get under control. Not eating or sleeping will harm your condition and it is up to you to try and deal with it

PerkyOchrePeer · 03/07/2026 20:31

Thanks for messages. I feel calmer now

Hashimotos disrase affects the thyroid. Maybe i should ask if i could be tested for that . Ive had an underactive thyroid for a few years. But never been advised to get a test for hashimotos

Hi op

firstly il say your anxiety surrounding your thyroid issue is exasperated by having an over active thyroid as it speeds up metabolism and Adrenalin which is also what causes the palpitations and heart rate spikes.

I developed a sudden over active thyroid over ten years ago now and was exactly like yourself.

mine escalated due to my body not tolerating the meds they gave me to slow it down so I opted for a removal as I really was unwell and hospitalised with it.

my levels were however 8 times over the highest level which was absolutely 😟

after removal I have been on thyroxine and have had the odd blood test that was reading slightly under but then would have one that would read over.

the shortness of breath is common as well as the palpitations and heat panic as I call it.

as your losing weight your body doesn’t need so much thyroxine so it will take a little while to stabilise.

all I can recommend is to be patient as it will slow and the racing heart and panic will settle down, but in the mean time I used breathing exercises,I did yoga to calm my mind just at home for ten minutes in the evenings, and really try and lower rushing around and juggling too much mentally.

we really don’t realise how stress affects the body which will be making your symptoms worse.

I know you say your not stressed but this is making you anxious and your posts sound so like my brain works when I’m overactive so try and slow it down

i I find if I watch easy watching feel good films in the evening it settles me better.

also sleep with a fan because the Adrenalin spikes create hot flashes which send you into a panic.

Thanks. I am on a new dose of thyroxine and im hoping it will do the trick. Ive got an excellent GP. I Hhave routine yearly blood tests and for years my thyroid was under and stabilised with meds. I saw a different GP who just said mine was too high and gave me different dose meds. No advice or asked what my symptoms were. I did the dise and had another blood test. I then booked in for the results and saw the doctor im vei g looked after by now. Sge said thyroid was still to high and asked about my symptoms and changed my dose again and is sorting out a thyroid scan. Not sure if ive accidentally done something g too strenuous but I e got muscle aches at the moment. I was ok yesterday so I used my vacuum and hoovered my carpets which was provably a bad idea

Overactive thyroid as pp point out causes and exacerbates anxiety itself. You have all my sympathy, it’s horrible to experience and hard to explain to others.

A low iodine diet is sometimes recommended before imaging or treatment with radioactive iodine, to encourage uptake. It’s not necessary otherwise.

Ive been getting heart strain. Not all the time though too dats ago i did some strenuous housework and i have quite a heavy upright hoover which I used. I had to pick it up to move it. The way my rooms are situated means I cannot drag it from the hallway to the lounge as there is a step.

I think using the hoover is why j am suffering now. I thought I was ok to use it but obviously not

Can you lie down for a while? Rest will help you get through this, but I know it’s easier said than done. Soon you will feel much better!

It is so awful, I will never forget how dreadful I felt when I had an overactive thyroid. You should definitely see the dr, they might give you something like beta blockers to calm the worst of those symptoms. Good luck, take it easy if you can.

It is extremely unlikely your thyroid is actually overactive, you are over medicated. It takes around 6 weeks for a change in dose to have an effect which is why labs will only test at 6 week intervals.
if your dose is too high you can get betablockers to help till its reached a manageable level. Your anxiety will be exacerbating the symptoms, try some relaxation exercises, it takes a little while to realise you need to be consistent doing them to help.

Post on here or the Thyroid.org forums and someone should be able to interpret your results, most people will have a level where they feel “well” and its not the same for everyone due to variables but posters will be able to tell you if your readings are outwith norms.

I was originally diagnosed with levels so off scale that the hospital consultant was astonished I was walking about. It still took nearly 4 years on carbimazole to decide to do something permanent about it.

try to relax if you can as that will help.

Yes so if i am being over medicated why is the GP wanting to arrange for me to have a thyroid scan. I saw a locum GPtoday because of the 2 migranes this week a d she was useless. She wanted 2 lower my medication when it had already been lowered by my own doctor so I told her not to change it again until I have had another blood test in 6 weeks time. I came away from\nThe appointment thinking , why did I bought her coming here

When i googled this the results were if you are over medicating on thyroxine then it will cause your thyroid to to be overactive which is what I have an then someone search on here. Set that. I don't have an overactive thyroid. I'm just being over medicated, which really amounts to the same thing as over medication, leads to an overactive thyroid. Also I have been put on 100mg mon to fri and I have to take 125mg Saturday and Sunday. I did ask if I could be put on 75mg each day because that is lowering the dose.If i'm on too much syroxine , and that might make my thyroid level. The doctor said no, that would not work. And that's why i've been put on what i've been put on , which I think is crazy , because I don't see how it could work
