Oh, now Badenoch has given her approval, the knives might be out for Farage on MN

So they aren't going to vote Reform to keep Labour out after all?

Farage called Badenoch a coward..

I don’t think the US team should be tarnished by what politicians have done in their name. Unless Balogun asked for their involvement. Given Trumps action regarding birthright citizenship I doubt he’s a big fan.

this reflects on the politicians and FIFA.

That was rather my point. The actual team is blameless and probably as disgusted as 99% of the world/. However they will be carrying the opprobrium when they take the pitch.

In the social media age, a worldwide boycott of sponsors is a very real risk when shit like this happens.

SerendipityJane · 06/07/2026 14:46

Farage called Badenoch a coward..

Given his past, that's quite mild

Piggywaspushed · 06/07/2026 14:46

I'm the resident American on the thread but I can't say I support them as a team. No one does really. The interest in football in the US really is very niche.

I don't tend to support England either and shout at the national anthem when they sing it but I am happy for people who so support them these days as that includes my DSs! Not in rugby though. Never in the rugby.

Not sure where my Trump supporting, Welsh brought up but England supporting BIL married to a Mexican is pinning his colours! Not the US it seems.

DuncinToffee · 06/07/2026 14:49

The US team was used for some horrible DHS propaganda posts and now this.

A UK v. USA final would now be amusing.

Piggywaspushed · 06/07/2026 16:38

Ermmmm.... UK jane??

Hilarious

BestIsWest · 06/07/2026 18:03

I mean I’m happy to get behind England but I wouldn’t go that far!

I was just listening to the Newsagents on Cottrell and the business cards.

placemats · 06/07/2026 21:19

There's always a receipt, or several in Cottrell's case.

There's some very funny responses in that thread Smile

He is also threatening to sue the Sunday Times for yesterdays article about Cottrel which he sees as an 'establishment attack'

Harriet Harman is of the opinion that the standards commissioner would likely punish more severely if he doesn't co-operate, fails to be open, tries to block information, goes on the attack

He really really doesn't like this scrutiny

Notonthestairs · 06/07/2026 21:33

There is always a threat of litigation.
Wont go anywhere - although I’d be quite happy to see it, I’ll bet the Sunday Times had their lawyers all over that article, they’ll have receipts.

BIossomtoes · 06/07/2026 21:34

I love the comment about his victim card running out of credit. All those responses really cheered me up.

placemats · 06/07/2026 21:35

He doesn't have an option. Hope he continues to feel discomfort equal to that everyone suffered post Brexit.

BIossomtoes · 06/07/2026 21:43

He got away with all sorts when he was an MEP, the pigeons are coming home to roost now. Couldn’t happen to a nicer man.

SerendipityJane · 06/07/2026 21:45

There's a reason it's called public life.

Romans would not understand our concept of privacy - as a historical counterpoint.

The Times had an article about Cottrell using Reform business cards

FT wrote about his book 'How to Launder Money: A Guide for Law Enforcement, Prosecutors and Policymakers'

In one chapter entitled "The Art of the Bribe", Cottrell and Files set out how politicians can be bought. They argue that bribes, if in the form of small gifts rather than cash, can be passed off as "a mistake of overexuberance in friendship".
They add: "Long-term relationships keep the bought person in hand while you're making money and the cohort is making money... Money from corruption is a bit like fiscal heroin; one fix and you know you need more.
Cottrell and Files provide several examples of non-cash gifts including
"playing some of the target's expenses", adding "many expenses can be paid that would pass unnoticed and untraceable"

From the FT.

Efacsen · 06/07/2026 21:52

Was sorry to read that if the investigations into the crapto allegations and the new stuff about Cottrell are combined into one single investigation it could be months and months before the commissioner reports - because there's so much of it and it's so complicated

On the other hand a protracted investigation might prove more stressful/painful to Farage?

The longer he has to squirm the better. According to the Political Currency podcast the Reform MPs were very subdued at the Spectator drinks party last week.
