Why are we so intolerant of neighbours

DAILY MAIL - DO SOME REAL REPORTING AND LEAVE MY CHAT ALONE

Apart from the poor people who do actually have horrific neighbours why are so many people intolerant of neighbours using their gardens to entertain friends, listen to music, cook on a bbq?

Obviously all within reason and not until stupid o'clock at night

I've read some stories on here this past week and honestly I can't believe what I'm reading from no lingerie hanging out to a rota for using your garden

OP posts:

I hear you OP. The only time I've objected to neighbours is when one lot built an unapproved extra building, right on the boundary, and another had an alarm that went off over an entire bank holiday weekend.

Car doors, tractors, children playing, lawn mowing, leaf blowing, cockrels, music, builders drilling etc are just domestic bustle. 🙂

SirChenjins · 30/06/2026 17:00

I remember there was a thread on here a while back about BBQs - someone had them every weekend (both days) all year round because ahe liked her meat BBQed. Her neighbours were objecting to the smell, and tbf, I think they were right.

Music being blasted does my nut in too. Buy headphones people.

Humans weren't really designed to live so densely, especially in 'non family' groups. We are not really walking with our tribe anymore. There used to be collective agreement on acceptable behaviour within smaller societies. Now we are expected to live in very close proximity to each other in circumstances where our values around acceptable behaviour can differ very widely. This leads to friction and a lack of tolerance towards other people. Eg. One person's music is another person's white noise.

sandalbed · 30/06/2026 17:18

I think it’s just weirdos on MNs, I have never known anyone in real life to complain about neighbours talking in their garden, spying on them whilst jumping on a trampoline, listening to a radio indoors etc.

sandalbed · 30/06/2026 17:18

During covid didn’t someone get annoyed their neighbour was coughing in the garden?!

Exactly. "So what! I'll do what I want! I don't care if others don't like it. I don't care etc" Spoilt!

Had exactly this comment from a close neighbour recently although it was 'we'll do what the f@#k we want' .....after 6 hours of relentless screaming from offspring. .

Rise of ego over society / happening over the last 40 years

👏 Spot on.

Is it not spoilt to expect everyone else to cease living just to make sure you live in silence?

takingitdown · 30/06/2026 15:01

So what? I’m not going to sit in silence because my neighbour is so entitled to think they dictate what I do in my own home.

That's the whole problem isn't it? Selfishness. Have some consideration for others.

Mirrorxxx · 30/06/2026 18:26

I don’t expect silence but I don’t think constant screaming is ok. Or loud music.

It’s not spoilt to want to listen to music in your own garden.

Use headphones then.

What do you think would happen if every single person in your street played music in their garden at the same time????

HeLikesHer · 30/06/2026 18:42

I think a lot of the stories on here are made up as they’re so far fetched tbh.

Nothing? We’d all be having a fun evening?

Use earplugs if you want silence

Because people like this are neighbours, OP.

I don't expect silence but I don't want to hear music from next door

6ate9 · 30/06/2026 18:52

My old neighbours had two very young children. They went to bed with the parents which was about 11pm/12 midnight. Every evening they would run up and down, play with noisy toys, scream and cry. Children used to have a sensible bedtime!!

So you do expect silence, because you don’t want to hear things from next door.

Either move to the middle of the countryside, or use ear plugs

Newmeagain · 30/06/2026 18:57

I think we can safely ignore the poster takingitdown. I have just realised I recognise them from another thread, offering dangerous medical advice. Loves to antagonise!!!!!!!

So you think it's fine to inflict your noise on others and they have to wear earplugs in their own house? If they played loud music, would that not annoy you?

But you’re not ‘in your own home’ - you’re outdoors.

No, not at all.

In the garden that I own.
