Has anyone met siblings who looked identical despite not being twins?

Has anyone ever met siblings who look identical despite not being twins? Today I went to a colleague's house to drop something off and met her two DDs aged 13 and nearly 17. If she hadn't told me otherwise I would have sworn blind they were identical twins, even with the age gap, to me they looked completely identical except for hairstyle and clothes. It wasn't just me as she told me they're constantly getting mistaken for twins. It was really bizarre! I didn't even know that was possible. Obviously siblings often look alike but I've never come across it to that extent.

There are 5 years between my Sister and I and we are often mistaken for twins.

Contrarymary30 · 29/06/2026 21:05

Yes , my window cleaners are brothers and identical . I always thought they were twins . It's very strange as I can't tell the difference between them .

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 29/06/2026 21:06

There was a boy in my ds's class in primary school who had a brother two years younger than him. The only way I could tell which was which was if they were standing next to each other, because there was a couple of inches difference in height.

Yes. Three brothers - two of them were twins but their older brother, by several years, was absolutely identical to them. (And I've no idea whether the twins were technically identical or were fraternal twins. Looks wise, they looked just as similar to their elder brother.)

RichPetuniaAgain · 29/06/2026 21:07

Yes. They were sisters and there was a ten years age gap between them. You’d think it would be easy to tell them apart, but it wasn’t. They were still identical 🤣.

I remember a family I went to school with. Six boys and then a small girl all looking exactly the same! All very handsome; dark wavy hair, freckles and pale blue eyes. Just all different ages!

Marianne04 · 29/06/2026 21:12

it sounds like it's much more common than I realised then! It was so odd to me as I have 3 siblings and we all look completely different to each other, nobody would even think we were related never mind twins. Is there a scientific explanation for why some siblings look much more alike than others or is it just random?

There were twins in my year at school, with a sister a couple of years below (but only about 18 months younger) who looked exactly like only one of the twins - slim with dark hair and freckles, while the other twin was blonde and curvy!

I found it fascinating as other people, such as new teachers, assumed they were pretending and having fun at their expense, but the lookalike sisters were so similar!

IceLollly · 29/06/2026 21:15

2 boys in DDs primary, the younger one just looked like the older one but shrunk down.

TonTonMacoute · 29/06/2026 21:16

DS was at school with a boy whose younger brother was the spitting image of him

Aidan and kavan on love iskand look so similar.

Ive had a couple of kids at school who look a lot like siblings.

Most kids you cant even tell are siblings though.

My sisters kids look alike. But its more similar hair/eye skin colour etc rather than faces particularly.

Catloverlady · 29/06/2026 21:17

Yes my son and daughter look like twins. They have the same eyes, skin tone, hair colour and height. People often mistake them for twins.

Cheeseandquackers21 · 29/06/2026 21:17

My brother and I 15 months apart dont look identical, but seeing photos of us as teens we defienetely could have been twins

Yogabearmous · 29/06/2026 21:17

My girls get mistaken for twins all the time and they are two years apart

Busybookworm · 29/06/2026 21:22

Used to know a family with four boys - two singletons then a pair of non-identical twins. The two singletons looked so alike that people often thought they must be twins!

FruAashild · 29/06/2026 21:22

I think most people don't actually pay much attention to how other people look and so think siblings are identical when they just share a family resemblance. My daughters are constantly being asked if they are twins or (at best) people can tell they are related to each other. They have different hair colour and texture, different eye colour, different face shapes, different body shapes. DD1 looks like her Dad and DB. DD2 is identical to my sister. The only feature they share is being short. Yet they are continually being yold they look identical 🤷🏼‍♀️.

igelkott2026 · 29/06/2026 21:23

One of Keely Hodgkinson's sisters looks very like her and they are not twins.

pteromum · 29/06/2026 21:27

Yes 🙌

I have twins, identical.
Then I have DD3
the DD4

People stop and comment on younger two more often than the actual twins.

And if I look back at photos even I struggle to work out which is which.

if they are sleeping together I have to really sniff! They are absolute doubles.

one is taller if next to each other but wow.

FruAashild · 29/06/2026 21:28

To give the opposite view, I know identical twins that were different if you knew them.

My grandmother was a twin and I always though her sister and she were completely different. Looking back at old photos I can now see how similar they look but can still tell the difference.

DD1 has friends who are identical twins but if you look closely at their faces they are easy to tell apart.

PreparationIsKey · 29/06/2026 21:30

Yes a few times. Also my sibling and my cousin are almost identical. They carry my mums side of the family gene well.
They are so alike many times at school they'd go to each other's lessons to trick teachers. They often got away with it

TakeThatAndParty81 · 29/06/2026 21:33

If anyone follows Hattie Bourn I think there is 18months maybe more between her boys but they are identical!

There were twins in my year at school (identical boys) who used to do that sometimes, it drove the teachers mad. 😂

I don't think my two look identical, but they do get mistaken for twins quite a bit, even though they are 10 and 8.
