Has anyone met siblings who looked identical despite not being twins?

Has anyone ever met siblings who look identical despite not being twins? Today I went to a colleague's house to drop something off and met her two DDs aged 13 and nearly 17. If she hadn't told me otherwise I would have sworn blind they were identical twins, even with the age gap, to me they looked completely identical except for hairstyle and clothes. It wasn't just me as she told me they're constantly getting mistaken for twins. It was really bizarre! I didn't even know that was possible. Obviously siblings often look alike but I've never come across it to that extent.

My niece and nephew were non-identical twins, obviously - or maybe not so obviously. Because people would always mistake them for twins before they were 3.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/06/2026 21:44

As teenagers DSIS and I were often mistaken for twins (it might have been the brown eyes and 80's perms).
Frequently when I said we weren't twins people would ask if she was the eldest . I'm 2 years her senior.

After years of infertility, a friend had a single girl, then 3mths later got pregnant with twins- a boy and girl. So 3 babies under 2! The girl twin was very small, so initially, the older girl and twin boy looked like the twins. As they've got older, the 2 girls now look like twins.

DC1 had non-identical twins in her class at primary school. And they were so different - height, hair colour, skin tone. They also had a brother who was 2 years older who was so similar to DT2. DT1 towered over them both.

CheeseWisely · 29/06/2026 21:47

Yes I know two brothers that I can’t tell apart out of context.

ETA they’re adults in their 40s, not young kids!

There was a boy in my ds's class in primary school who had a brother two years younger than him. The only way I could tell which was which was if they were standing next to each other, because there was a couple of inches difference in height.

People say this about my 2 boys all the time!

I do think they look similar but to me my younger boy looks exactly like his older sister, she's over ten years older so other people don't see it as much but they have the exact same face, all the photos of them as toddlers could be the same child if not for the obvious differences in camera quality and fashions youd not be able to say which child was in the photo.

frockandcrocs · 29/06/2026 21:51

I look scarily like my cousins, they ARE twins, and when I visited them as a teen, we often were asked if we were triplets (one of them came to the UK for a uni trip, came to see me at work and everyone acted surprised that I had a twin 🤣).
The three of us look like our great-great grandmother.

ForPearlViper · 29/06/2026 21:55

Several people near our home called my sister and I the (our road name) twins when we were children. I was dark with green eyes. She had fair hair, freckles and blue eyes. We were two years apart and didn't have a strong resemblance. I will never understand why - one deluded person maybe but....

Justploddingonandon · 29/06/2026 22:00

My sister and I often got mistaken for twins growing up, but think it was just because we were the same height ( we were two years apart but she’s always been tall and I was late to have my growth spurt).
I am however the spitting image of my mum at the same age ( I can only tell from clothes and hairstyles in the photos), and once saw a picture of my great grandmother as a child and if it wasn’t in black and white would’ve thought it was me dressing up in old fashioned clothes.

GU24Mum · 29/06/2026 22:04

@Bergamotte- wonder if we know the same family?!

I’ve got a friend whose eldest is a surviving identical twin from the first pregnancy. The siblings are also identical twins a few years younger but they are all incredibly similar.

sakura06 · 29/06/2026 22:05

Someone in my family has non-identical twins and one of the twins looks exactly like their older sister.

LimeFish · 29/06/2026 22:07

I remember a girl at school was the middle sister of 3. The 3 of them and their Mum looked like the same person but at different ages. It was funny seeing them as a family with their Dad as it looked liked he'd had no input.

2differenttypesofpeople · 29/06/2026 22:10

There's 2 years between my DD and DS and they look like literally twins. Whenever they get their school pictures done I always really enjoy putting half of their faces next to each other and them both matching up exactly

When they were younger a little girl asked my daughter why they had the exact same face as each other 😅

DD was small for her age and DS was large for his age so for a while they were the exact same size as each other too. Awww and when I look at baby pictures I genuinely only know who is who because one is dressed in pink and the other blue

MageKing · 29/06/2026 22:10

The thing is, they dont look identical. But similar enough. My sister and I are not twins and have a decent age gap. If you see us together, you could tell we are sisters, but not identical. Nonetheless, We have both been mistaken for the other one out of context or recognised as "from the Smith family" on multiple occasions.

It is not unusual for one of us to text the other saying something like, "i met Mrs Jones from your school last night... she thought I was you and came over to say how well "jack" is doing ay school" or similar.

Ineedanewsofa · 29/06/2026 22:12

This used to happen to my sister and I even thought we have a nearly 4 year age gap and we look nothing like each other! Some people just have really poor face memory so even a passing resemblance becomes “twins”.

VikingLady · 29/06/2026 22:15

I went to school with a family of five boys, all in successive school years. They were ALL virtually identical apart from size. Very, very odd.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 29/06/2026 22:16

I look very alike to my brother, especially when we’ve both had shorter hair in the past. The boys (2 half brothers) on my dad’s side all look uncannily alike despite one being red brown hair and hazel eyes, they all have the same facial and hand gestures. Have all lived apart from the other. They all look spookily like their dad. Girls (half sisters) in the family there’s nothing like that at all.

sunsu · 29/06/2026 22:16

My aunty and her sister are often mistaken for twins! It’s funny because they are similar but they’re not twins, they do however have sisters that are twins!! When all of the sisters get together it’s awfully confusing.

TheEasterBunny3 · 29/06/2026 22:23

DC3 is absolutely identical to DC1 at the same age (big age gap so could never be thought of as twins). In baby/toddler photos of them both I can only sometimes tell who is who by the outfit they are wearing! Friends & parents of friends of DC3 often mostake photos in our house of DC1 as DC3 & I sometimes show them other ones to see if they can guess which DC it is (90% failure rate!).

Yes my son and daughter look like twins. They have the same eyes, skin tone, hair colour and height. People often mistake them for twins.

Well this is just people showing their stupidity. It's literally impossible for a boy/girl twins set to be identical, and boy/girl twins are no more or less likely to look like one another than any other boy/girl siblings.

Crwysmam · 29/06/2026 22:36

My DSis and I are very similar, fortunately I’m blonde and she’s brunette. When we were in our 20s we were most similar. We are also in the same profession and my sister has been mistaken for me on occasion by colleagues.

The weird thing is that her youngest DD and my DS were identical as babies and up until about 6 yrs old. There is 2 yrs between them but DN is short and DS is tall so we’re the same height as each other for years. We were out shopping on one occasion and someone commented that it was unusual to see boy/girl twins that looked identical. They were shocked when we told them they were cousins. Even before my DS was born strangers assumed DN was my DD or friends of my DSis would instantly know I was her sister because DN looked more like me than her mum.

My now grown up DS looks like a clone of my DF at the same age. And my DN has my DMs enigmatic smile although, along with all of us she has inherited my DFs big lips.

IKR! I was going to say the same!

MIL always said that DS and DD looked so alike they could be twins, and couldn’t quite understand that fraternal twins are no more alike than any other siblings!
