That's is sad. She fought hard for Denville Hall too (the Actors Benevolent Fund care home) and dealt with the nasty politics around the board/trustee dispute really well I thought.

From the reporting, it very much appeared she and the others were treated appallingly but they never were publicly rude or offensive about the internal politics.

Edited

I remember reading about that in Private Eye; she was treated really shabbily but maintained dignity and grace throughout.

I met her once, when she was appearing as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Bring Earnest. She was absolutely lovely.

I loved her. Once managed to get front row tickets to see her play Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest. Absolutely fab.

I also loved To The Manor Born and thoroughly enjoyed Margot’s ensembles in The Good Life.

She seems to have been a great person all round. A class act.

spiderlight · 29/06/2026 11:54

We still watch The Good Life whenever it happens to come round. I will forever remember her picking her way across the garden in immaculate yellow waterproofs and sou'wester to help with the harvest in the episode where Tom has hurt his back.

Isitevensummer · 29/06/2026 11:57

An amazing woman with a great legacy.

Toveylove · 29/06/2026 11:59

RIP Penelope, Thankyou for giving so much joy. We love you 💜

ruethewhirl · 29/06/2026 12:00

Ahh, how sad. A great actress and always seemed like a fun person too.

LostNFoundSV · 29/06/2026 12:01

Aw, that’s so sad. I loved Penelope Keith and, like PP’s, she was such a wonderful part of my childhood. I was only thinking about her yesterday. RIP Ms Keith 💐

HoraceCope · 29/06/2026 12:02

Margo Leadbetter, never forgotten,
and indeed Penelope Keith, a lovely lady and true national treasure

DoubleShotEspresso · 29/06/2026 12:04

Incredibly sad, she was a wonderful human being & a fantastic actress. Fond memories of her. RIP 🙏

Bristolandlazy · 29/06/2026 12:04

Ah, bless her, sad to read that. She was proper job. 💐

Piglet89 · 29/06/2026 12:04

Margo Leadbetter is my absolute hero.

I didn’t realise she and her husband adopted two brothers when she was 48.

Wish I’d met her: she sounds fantastic.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 29/06/2026 12:05

Lived a couple of miles down the road from me. A true Surrey legend - born here, lived here, died here; she loved it. Did so much for charity. Bloody brilliant woman, very intelligent, and thoroughly lovely.

user5683926547 · 29/06/2026 12:05

Ah, thats sad, she was fab. Loved Margo and the Manor Born, such a fairy tale when she got her man (and her house!)

UrsulaBelle · 29/06/2026 12:06

That is sad news. Brilliant comic actress and it seems a good all round egg.

Bubblebathbefore8 · 29/06/2026 12:06

She lived near to me, a charming lady, immaculate and friendly. RIP

PerkingFaintly · 29/06/2026 12:08

Ah no.

Thank you, wonderful Penelope, for all the joy and laughter. Flowers

The world would have been so much poorer without you.

BridgetJonesV2 · 29/06/2026 12:08

86 is a wonderful age, and she'll never be forgotten.

I'd say that's a life well lived.

MagicalBagPuss · 29/06/2026 12:09

'That’s the last time I'll play the tart for you Jerry'. Wonderful, and the Christmas programme where she and Felicity Kendal early swapped partners plus her refusing to make a hat out of The Daily Mail. As my stepson said, it was her who are the show funny.
Oddly, my DH and I were talking about her over the last few days.
RIP Penelope.

Notonthestairs · 29/06/2026 12:10

rewatched The Good Life recently with DD. We both loathed Tom but adored Margot and Jerry.
She was such a talented actor - as somebody has already commented, she managed to make Margot vulnerable.

RB68 · 29/06/2026 12:11

Another icon of our age - lI look forward to some reruns

DuchessedOrleans · 29/06/2026 12:11

An amazing actress and all round lovely person.

I often channel Margo Leadbetter whilst gardeningGrin

Chipsahoy · 29/06/2026 12:13

A true beauty and such an incredible actress. Sad to hear from her passing away but what an incredible and long life she has had.

Happyjoe · 29/06/2026 12:15

I adored To The Manor Born.

Sad to hear, but she lived a good life (!) and left a lovely legacy.

Charlottejbt · 29/06/2026 12:17

I loved her. RIP "Audrey".

SaskiaWatkins · 29/06/2026 12:18

I don’t normally care for famous deaths but this will genuinely affect my life! I listen to a lot of audiobooks/series with her, the autism in me is funny about voices and I loved hers very much. I shall be devastated that we won’t get another Agatha Raisin (even though the books have gone to shit since Beaton died).
