A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Wrong thread? Does all that mean Taylor Swift is getting married? Didn’t know that, but not sure what that has to do with the Labour Gvt??

Edited

It’s a nice distraction from the relentless shite.

No need for this. We talk about all sorts on this thread, as you know well.

BBC News is leading with an interview with Starmer. I hate to kick a man when he’s down, but Starmer is so self-serving it’s painful. How he can combine such bullshit about serving the country with so much bollocks about his “personal” decision is remarkable.

I would have so much more respect for him, at this moment at least, if he said he was sad but he recognised that he clearly commanded no respect in the country. So he’s re-running his silly resignation speech I suppose.

I haven't seen it, but read some bits of it. Agree with your take. He's deluded.

My grand daughters are swifties. They had a swifties birthday party last year with a lookalike party singer. Was great fun everyone dressed up. I do like the little cowgirl boots.

IF ENGLAND do beat Mexico it will be 2 am against Norway/ Brazil in Kansas City Next Sunday I think so it would be the same licence nonsense. The thought of drunken fans at 5 am after a possible defeat against 'Mexico' would have been horrendous . However, if England do win against 2250 metre altitude a side without a proper right back , Madueke who looks like he is running in quick sand Rashford who could not hit a barn door a knacked Saka and Declan Rice. A defence who looks vulnerable every-time the opponents cross the halfway line we will be in the same stupid situation of 5/6 am pub licences . It could work if only a few places under strict rules and ticketed events were allowed late extension licences but allowing a local 'boozer' to open is madness.

It is also a piss take to all pubs that have been decimated by this shower of shite, where unless the pub is one where it is only the landlord serving. The idea of employing staff to 5 or 6 in the morning is for the birds as well as trying to get drunken 'arses' of the premises good luck with that. It is an example of Labour Party thinking 'let the peasants' drink one night until 5 or 6 and they won't notice anything else about the country. Rant Over

No it’s 10pm on Sat 11th, the other match is 2am on Sunday 12th - I’ve just checked on the FIFA app

Is Mexico back at 1am now? Or is it still to be decided?

@SapphireCasino my dd is big swiftie!! Have you seen her live? We managed to get tickets for Eras at Wembley and @Parsley4321 am jealous you were given them...we had to forgo a holiday that year they were so expensive......totally worth it though!

On a "side note!" I just wish Starmer would go now. I dont imagine in the history books of the future he will be much more than a footnote.

Everyone I know who went to Eras tour said it was the best show they've ever seen.
Good luck to them both 💕

Sorry I’m not clear on what you mean. The England Mexico game is at 1am Sunday, the pubs are open as discussed. The match against Norway/Brazil is in the event we go through to the quarter finals.

Ok, thanks. The news were saying it had been brought forward to 7pm Sunday when I went to bed lastnight due to expected storms. Seems to have been put back to original time now.

This was in Charles Moore’s Telegraph column this morning:

He might learn from the fact that, in 1979, she had a staff of fewer than 100 people in Downing Street. Today it is four times bigger and therefore many times worse. Yet Mr Burnham wants to add to the bureaucratic pile-up by adding a “No 10 North.

Why does the PM need 400 people? Especially since computers - which wouldn’t have been in widespread use in 1979 - were supposed to make less work for admin staff?

That’s lovely. It’s cute to see little girls get interested in pop and music, dd and her friends are.

Yes we don't need another No.10 with staff spending half their day on a train. We just need the one we have to actually function properly.

They can get rid of No10 and No10 North and just live in a shuttle train North and down South.

That is funny. Of course they don't want any of the inconveniences of London: only the money.

Interestingly, in properly devolved countries with regional tax-raising powers - like Switzerland - they don't seek equal outcomes, and there is usually only minimal regional redistribution, to meet a minimum standard of living. They accept that regions which don't raise as much tax don't have as good public services. That's what makes the regions compete to get the business, work effectively, and be successful.

Not what Andy is proposing, of course. He just wants more and more redistribution, with the regional governments just a funnel for Southern money to be spent in the North... Not convinced there will be genuine 're-balancing' of opportunities... just more opportunities for 'friends' on the make to make an extra buck out of the (southern) taxpayer, I would expect. The Left are so utterly corrupt.

We get more in Wales which enables us to waste it faster 🙄

Monty36 · 04/07/2026 10:32

I think it is not right to suggest all of the North is poorer than all of the South. Having lived in both it isn’t. There is not some sort of line you can draw and say ‘ poor up, rich below. There are plenty of poor places in the South. And it suggests his narrative is still to please Northern voters. By telling them everyone in the South is better of than they are. He needs to get out of that frame of mind and govern for all. Not some.

He is apparently looking to give concessions to younger people to help them with buying a home. Ie no income tax for three years. The article states 74% of boomers own their own property ( it doesn’t clarify whether that means outright or mortgaged) comparative to 5% of Gen Z.

A bit like the North v South poor/rich this is too simplistic. There will be people who earn so little they can never afford a mortgage.
There will be those who earn pretty well whose parents can offer a deposit and who chip in with funding for a property. And who are likely to leave a sizeable inheritance.
Versus those who are in neither category. Not on a minimum wage but nor can their parents help them out, and nor will they likely inherit much.
The thought of tax breaks based on age is not right. There will be many who earn very well, even inherit, whose parents can and do help them out. Who do not need a tax break. The efforts need to be nuanced. Not a blanket approach.

Our existing devolution certainly doesn't seem to have benefitted the regions: with health and education outcomes nose-diving in both Wales and Scotland.

Even the corruption scandals of the SNP were arguably caused by devolution: since it concentrated excessive political power in the hands of one couple who no-one could speak against, and there was no legislative second house or independent institutions capable of providing checks and balances. It's a complete mess.

Burnham's devolution will be just the same: huge amounts of money wasted, to give worse outcomes.

Don't get me wrong, I think our regional inbalances are harmful to everyone, and I'm all for trying to increase regional development.

But it needs to be genuine development - ie those regions becoming more productive in their own right. Not just regional spending of SE-generated money.

Nuance doesn't fit an envy based policy agenda.

strawberrybubblegum · 04/07/2026 10:41

Unfortunately, I think the UK is too socialist for any kind of successful regional development.

Too many people think the solution to every problem is to spend more of someone else's money.
