Will you sign up to the new refugee sponsorship scheme?

The Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is apparently announcing next week a new refugee sponsorship scheme.

It would allow households to privately sponsor refugees from conflict zones.

Applications open this autumn, with the aim of resettling more than 10,000 people.

It’s modelled on Canada’s scheme and the Homes for Ukraine programme.

Sponsors would commit to providing financial, emotional and practical support.

What do people think? I just can't help thinking that with the current pressures on housing, schools, GPs and local services, how this will actually work in practice? Has anyone been involved in the Ukraine sponsorship scheme and can share what it was really like day-to-day?

Curious to hear everyone’s views.

Wait until they start commandeering older people's houses to put them in

It may come to that - and not just older people’s houses.

Yeah and what did you mean exactly?

How many Afghan women do you want to give passports to, all of them?

All of them, in the same way that I would have been happy for passports to be given to kids in the kindertransport.

Khayker · 27/06/2026 22:04

JazzyJelly · 27/06/2026 21:29

Yeah and the population of the EU is about 450 million. But this is a moral argument above that of economics. Would you have taken in one of the kindertransport? Because I'll take in a woman or female child from Afghanistan, I've got a spare room.

This government and those who come in to our country legally or illegally are relying on our very British sense of justice to continue the importation of the third world. We are being taken advantage of because we have a highly evolved sense of right and wrong and are generous. It's not just Afghans, it many countries in the far and middle east. Their values are not compatible with ours and very often the behaviour of the women is worse than the men. Import the third world, become the third world.

SereneGoose · 27/06/2026 22:05

I won't sign up because I'm still in a wonderful hosting/landlady position with an absolutely brilliant Ukrainian family.

So I'm supposed to reject women and kids who have been treated terribly on the basis that the men they live with are awful?

You’re being ridiculous, it’s not realistic or affordable.

we have a climate issue in the UK and I’m sure one factor is the continuing building on our green fields and too much concrete

why do they have to come to the UK, why is it always our problem?

So you'd be okay with young female students getting attacked?
Maybe offer your house before you suggest putting young girls who did NOT choose this in this position.
You're a truly vile person.

WTF? Are you one of those that thinks all refugees are going round attacking women (I.e. a racist)? We hve plenty of sex offenders and creepy bastards of your own, many in reform, Stephen Yaxley Lennon, the fordingbridge rapist youths etc.

Object to the scheme by ll means but enough of the unsubstantiated , racist propaganda please.

Yes. Because they will then bring over their male relatives in their millions. You're being astonishingly naive not to see that.

Per capita data in Europe is clear

MrsBelindaMay · 27/06/2026 22:17

This scheme will bring about hundreds, if not thousands, of fake refugees who will pay people to act as fake sponsors, just for the sake of getting real UK visas for their whole families

Whataaboutism much?

It's proven that men from certain cultures (aka from countries where women Re treated like turd) are a lot more likely to commit certain types of crimes.
But what about....what about all the bad white men?

It's not racist propaganda. There's a big per-capita problem with the asylum seekers and sexual offenses.
Calling people racist for noticing won't work any more.

No need to import more of those from backwards cultures

I think this is already happening, some people can pretend they can’t find anyone suitable for a job opportunity living here and bring in someone from overseas

JoyousOpalLemur · 27/06/2026 09:11

Why does that make it better? That the refugees have relatives already in the country?

So that people can support their relatives? Why isn't that a good thing? It's not unreasonable for someone to want to bring their mother/aunt/grandmother etc to live with them and agree to pay for their housing, healthcare etc, so they aren't a financial drain on the State. Lots of countries have this sort of scheme.

Would I agree to sponsor a relative? Yes. Would I agree to provide financial, emotional and housing support for a complete stranger for a year? No. I don't have the money or space and I wouldn't move a potentially traumatised stranger in with my child.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 27/06/2026 22:21

What happens when the host family say it isn't working out? Where do the refuges go then? The Front of the social housing queue?

Portakalkedi · 27/06/2026 22:25

Can we assume that the minister and other MPs who approve this will be offering their spare rooms?

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 27/06/2026 22:26

I speak French. I will take a French refugee, when they become available. Which is most unlikely.

A potentially traumatised stranger ... who will potentially need mental health support from the local council. Cue waiting list for mental heath services getting even longer.

Plus pressure on all the other things the sponsor won't provide: healhcare, dental treatment, education, long term housing etc etc.

So I'm supposed to reject women and kids who have been treated terribly on the basis that the men they live with are awful?

No, you're supposed to weigh up the effect of bringing these women to the country and what dangers they present, if any. There is already an Afghan refugee scheme operated by this government which includes all family members including where appropriate husbands, brothers, father and mother of both sides of the family. Once they arrive, they need dentists and various medical appointments which will be arranged for them. They need several houses to live in and will be allowed to claim benefits as soon as they arrive from a system which they have never contributed to. Their children will attend schools with interpretors which slows down lessons. They will be prioritised for every service so whilst its commendable that you want to help, Afghan women those that move here under the current scheme know their way to the gravy train before they arrive. One immigrant under a government scheme can bring 8 or 10 relatives with them, when you count parents, children etc. Each one will use all of the services we can't access because of backlogs.
