Will you sign up to the new refugee sponsorship scheme?

The Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is apparently announcing next week a new refugee sponsorship scheme.

It would allow households to privately sponsor refugees from conflict zones.

Applications open this autumn, with the aim of resettling more than 10,000 people.

It’s modelled on Canada’s scheme and the Homes for Ukraine programme.

Sponsors would commit to providing financial, emotional and practical support.

What do people think? I just can't help thinking that with the current pressures on housing, schools, GPs and local services, how this will actually work in practice? Has anyone been involved in the Ukraine sponsorship scheme and can share what it was really like day-to-day?

Curious to hear everyone’s views.

The truth is kept away from the public. I've no idea what the endgame is but I'm assuming this is based on projections of our falling birthrate in the UK. I feel we are being replaced and I really fear for my children and their future.

I absolutely agree with you, and have considered similarly.

It explains the stark divisions in the UK, and that the next GE will see a swing to the right, for whichever party stands on an anti-immigration ticket.

How about we just don't allow loads of men to move here from the world's shit holes and our kids remain relatively safe?

Many posters are like "what about white British criminals"

You do realise there are 25 million women in Afghanistan?

Yeah and the population of the EU is about 450 million. But this is a moral argument above that of economics. Would you have taken in one of the kindertransport? Because I'll take in a woman or female child from Afghanistan, I've got a spare room.

There are 20 million Afghan women. You're happy that they would all have the right to come to the UK? Then once granted LTR they'd be able to bring in male members of their families.

I think there are some posters on here that would be ok with that scenario.

Them? Sure. Their men? No.

Fresdom · 27/06/2026 21:33

There will be lack of integration issues from the women as well. Many probably can't speak English and probably won't learn when they come here

What about them? They're our problem, we don't need anymore imported.

See exactly.

There was one poster on a previous thread who said VAWG in Europe Vs the 3rd world is not different at all. "Women are abused everywhere so it's no different we should let them in".

She didn't however answer if she'd feel as safe in Kabul as a women or in the EU

Yes it’s absolutely horrible, perhaps if the people who were actually born here were priority for social housing we may have a higher birth rate. Every year it is getting worse

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 27/06/2026 21:39

Just another gimmick to appease some of the sofr Labour MP's. Who are kicking off about proposed stricter immigration controls.
Sound like a scheme.that is half baked, I'll thought out and massively open to abuse.

Need less to say. Very unimpressed.

I wouldn't. That society is rotten with misogyny. Like FGM where it's the mothers, grandmothers, and aunts who arrange for the little girls to be cut. The women aren't going to magically be progressive.

5MinuteArgument · 27/06/2026 21:44

Mahmood is trying to appeal to the Left in the Labour Party, who are now in charge with Starmer gone.

She wants to keep her job. That's far more important to the likes of Mahmood than the safety and wellbeing of the British people.

SpaceRaccoon · 27/06/2026 21:44

£350pp, should be a nice little earner for the slumlords anyway.

Olive123456 · 27/06/2026 21:44

Absolutely not, and I have lots of spare rooms.

Complicatedthings · 27/06/2026 21:45

Winter2020 · 27/06/2026 19:06

After the first few people murdered or raped by their refugee hit the press the scheme will be pulled.

It probably won't make it to the news and people affected will be told to stay quiet.

It'll make it to X, but people will sneer at the source as the BBC will studiously avoid reporting it other than to frame it as "Coventry man" or something. The family will get a visit from the nudge unit. Rinse and repeat.

Yeah obviously I'm suggesting 20 million women live in the spare room in the back of my house. That's definitely what you meant.

lovecotswoldsliving · 27/06/2026 21:49

No, absolutely no.
If I can ever help anyone it would be a British youngster who needs a place to stay.

You said it not me, you wanted to give passports to Afghan women. Other posters picked you up on it.

EasternStandard · 27/06/2026 21:34

Do you mean 20 million women?

Yes. I think the rape and possible murder of 20 million women is an incredible evil, the likes of which we have rarely seen in history. I think protecting them is probably the most moral thing someone can do as a western person.

NameChangeAgain48 · 27/06/2026 21:56

I wouldn't have anyone staying in my home, not even my own family. That doesn't mean I don't care about refugees. I think people fleeing war or persecution should have safe and legal routes to seek protection. I'd just rather support them in other ways, through charities, volunteering, or backing policies that help them rebuild their lives.

How many Afghan women do you want to give passports to, all of them?
