Am I the only person in the UK who is a bit chilly?

I've finally relented and put my fluffy oodie on.

We have 2 portable air con units. They are supposed to be one for downstairs and one for upstairs, but I kept turning the downstairs one off because it was making me cold, so DDs took it because they said the upstairs one only covers half of the upstairs.

Which was fine because it was making me cold anyway, but the way they've angled them to cover the entire upstairs floor, including where the dogs are, (it's like a U shape, their rooms are on opposite ends of the U, and the dogs hang out in the middle) means both air cons are now pointed half at the stairs and are blasting cold air down the stairs and under the door.

Their argument is that I can put a jumper on. The dogs cannot take their fur off, which again is true, but I am still envious of all the cosy, warm people while I am sitting shivering in my oodie.

Go outside then.

PinkFrogss · 25/06/2026 20:32

Sit in the lounge and close the door to limit the cold air coming in or go outside.

Frequency · 25/06/2026 20:33

I tried that earlier, or rather, I opened the window to let the heat in because I was at work and our wifi doesn't reach the garden. That was nice, but then the sun moved, and the garden got shady, and now outside is colder than the front room, not by much, but still colder.

This is why aircon is not the solution.

EmeraldRoulette · 25/06/2026 20:43

This is idiotic

Give one of them to me because I could really do with two in my flat. There you go -sorted.

or you could tell your kids to re-angle them. You are the parent!

Whorulestheroost1 · 25/06/2026 20:43

What?!

sweatymessi · 25/06/2026 20:45

Where are you?

TheChosenTwo · 25/06/2026 20:46

Tuesday and Wednesday I was in the office and found the aircon too cold and had to put a sweatshirt on and my blanket (that I keep on the back of my chair) over my legs.
It was lovely and warm outside so I just took a few breaks to warm up outside.
I hate ac and fans in general. If you’re cold though, you’re cold. It’s not a case of being unreasonable.

VIII · 25/06/2026 20:47

I would maybe make a visit with your GP. You cannot possibly cold if you're in a house where others require air con and you're behind a closed door.

ButterflyLounge · 25/06/2026 20:48

I feel like this is rage bait. But I’m too hot to feckin’ argue. I’ve sweated down places I didn’t know had the ability.

have fun in your oodie.

Rituelec · 25/06/2026 20:48

But weird. Are you ill?

Agree.

My mum reported feeling very cold when she actually had heatstroke

So, it is a possibility

Pickledonions12 · 25/06/2026 20:50

I'd visit your GP. Get bloods done for ferritin, iron and thyroid

This is why aircon is not the solution.

Maybe, although I do like the aircon on a night or when I come back from a walk and feel all sticky.

I'm leaning towards the solution being to evict the kids so I can have 100% control over the temperatureWink

@sweatymessi Teesside, one of the coastal towns, I don't think we're quite as hot as most areas. We're certainly not hot enough to warrant turning the top floor of the house into a freezer.

The Met Office say it has been 24C here at the hottest, it's currently 20C.

Doesn’t sound normal at all.

"The Met Office say it has been 24C here at the hottest, it's currently 20C."

WTF? Why is the aircon on then? Just open the window.

Bitzee · 25/06/2026 20:54

It’s one thing to feel cold when you’re directly in front of the AC, I have a desk cardi because I sit right under the vent at work. But if you’re in a totally separate room and everyone else in your house thinks it’s scorchio then you might want to take your temperature and see if you’re running a fever. That was me on Tuesday, shivering under the winter duvet, and am now on antibiotics for sinusitis.

NerrSnerr · 25/06/2026 20:55

That’s why you’re chilly. It’s 31° at 9pm here.

Ohhh sorry x posted with you. It’s your family then not you! I had assumed everywhere was pushing 30 today but clearly not.

TheChosenTwo · 25/06/2026 20:56

Bloody hell I don’t think it’s normal to be requiring aircon at 24° - it’s not you it’s definitely them. 20° is certainly not hot ffs!

yonem · 25/06/2026 20:57

20c isn’t hot but it’s also nowhere near oodie weather. I’d see a doctor.

That's your answer then. 24 degrees is not hot enough for the AC to be on so no wonder you're cold. I would be. In my county today one part was only 22 degrees, over on the other side it was 35 degrees.

sweatymessi · 25/06/2026 20:57

@Frequencythat makes more sense, don’t know why they need air con tbh.

Growlybear83 · 25/06/2026 20:59

I must admit I had to put a cardigan on when I was in Waitrose yesterday because the air conditioning was so fierce 😆
